And yeah, I'm pretty freaking stoked for the games this weekend. Tonight could be very interesting if SC doesn't bring their A game. It will also be fun to see what happens in the Cougar bowl, with Leech's Pac-12 debut at WSU. Can a Kellen Moore-less BSU beat Sparty at home? Will Derrick Dooley's fate be sealed with a loss to NC state? Could there be a more fun and tradition rich game than 'Bama-vs-Michigan for the Saturday nightcap. Looks like my liver will be working overtime. Considering I'm off tomorrow and Monday, I can't think of a more perfect 4 day weekend!

I hope Vandy gets boat-raced. They need to remember who they are: The worst team in the history of the SEC with the worst fans.

Even coming off one of their best seasons in history, which ain't saying much, they couldn't even sell out their rinky-dink 40,000 seat stadium for the season opener against a top ten opponent.

And what the hell does "Anchor Down" mean?

I think it's a distinct possibility.  Both team have great running backs, if it turns into a grinder I think it's anyone's ballgame.  Of course I wouldn't bet on it but I think this is probably going to be a lot closer than you imagine.

My guess is they're using this as an extortion tactic for the cable companies that haven't signed on for the WatchESPN app. Either that or they're deliberately trying to move people away from the online experience and back toward watching on television.

How on Earth are Alabama and USC equal? Since they split the national championship in 1978, Alabama has four undisputed national championships to USC's zero. In the last decade USC has all of half a national title while Alabama has two.

And how are Oklahoma, Florida State, and Oklahoma State all in the same general area? Ten win seasons in the last ten years: OU - 8, FSU - 2, OSU - 2. Conference Championships in the last ten years OU - 6, FSU - 2, OSU - 1. National Championship Game appearances in the last ten years: OU - 3, FSU - 0, OSU - 0.

I must've copied the link incorrectly, sorry.

Here are the words:

By RACHEL BACHMAN

The 2012 college-football season has arrived at last. Starting Thursday, 124 teams from Massachusetts to Hawaii will battle for glory on the field, while trying to minimize the damage they cause off of it.

To rate their prospects for success in both respects, The Wall Street Journal presents its second-annual Grid of Shame.
How Good (and Bad) Is Your Team?

Here is how all 124 major-college teams rate, on the field and off:

View Interactive

The Grid is a subjective rating of every major-college team on two levels: how good the team should be this season, and how much shame it has brought its supporters. The shame scale takes into account a variety of factors, from NCAA rules-related scandals and player misbehavior to academic performance and financial state.

Controversy is a constant today in college football, and being a fan requires being able to overlook the sport's many ills.

Not everything that has happened over the past year was bad, depending on your point of view. College football's power brokers finally agreed on a four-team playoff which will begin after the 2014 season, quieting the mob that had formed against the reviled Bowl Championship Series. Texas Christian and West Virginia are happy. Those schools ditched the less-respected Mountain West and Big East conferences, respectively, and joined the Big 12. Missouri and Texas A&M did even better, leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference, winner of the past six national championships.

But that is hardly all. North Carolina is embroiled in a deepening academic-fraud scandal. Louisiana State, which reached the national-title game last season, recently dismissed star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu from the team for violating team rules. And, most visibly of all, Penn State went from paragon of purity to symbol of the worst the sport can bring: the metastasized stain of a former assistant coach's child abuse and the resulting four-year NCAA postseason ban.

In fact, a whopping four programs-Penn State, Central Florida, North Carolina and Ohio State-will sit out this postseason for transgressions ranging from academic fraud to recruiting irregularities.

As the season kicks off, several schools have improved their shame standing simply by not embarrassing themselves over the past year. In Saturday's biggest game, defending national-champion Alabama plays No. 8 Michigan, which just a year ago was riven by former coach Rich Rodriguez's 15-22 tenure. Southern California is ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll as it returns from a two-year postseason ban for the extra-benefits scandal involving former Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush.

To track which teams deserve toasting or roasting, see the Grid of Shame, along with profiles of 10 teams that moved significantly from last year. Feel free to dispute the results: Whether the fans of football schools are capable of feeling shame is part of the debate.

Hey sweet, BSU is on par with Notre Dame! Which is wither bad for ND, good for BSU, or both. xD

I'm not entirely sure why MSU (the one down south) is embarrassing. We haven't done much wrong lately. Maybe they're thinking of Ole Miss?

Didn't Mississippi State just fire a coach in the middle of a recruiting scandal three years after (allegedly) trying to buy Cam Newton?

That coach got fired because he was doing a shiat job, if I recall. He wasn't buying Newton, he was recruiting him (the classic flavor of recruiting), and Newton wanted more money than was legal, so he got turned away.

That's the story I was told, anyway. And Croom really was a shiatty coach.

No respect for Florida State? They're expected to win at least two games early, against...um

How the hell is Missouri more admirable or more powerful than K-State? I have no dog in that fight, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Was the ball in the air when he hit him? In college you can hit the receiver all you want as long as the ball isn't in the air. Also in college and the NFL if both players are looking at the ball and going for it, they have discretion as whether or not to call interference if there is contact.

Yeah, it was almost to the WR. DB just got there early. Obvious call, correct call, ridiculous sputtering by homer announcers about how they shouldn't call it because the guy still kind of had a shot at catching the ball off-balance.

2012-08-30 10:14:49 PM

IAmRight: Whoa, if a helmet comes off, the player has to come out for a play? That's a really dumb rule.

it's not a dumb rule. a helmet that is fitted properly and secured correctly rarely will come off during the course of play. however, if you watch players during close-ups you'll notice that many choose not to secure all of the chinstrap snaps and many players prefer looser helmets that are easier to slide on and off. both of those behaviors lessen whatever protection a helmet gives. if football leagues are going to pretend to be serious about head injuries getting players to wear proper fitting and correctly secured helmets is a must. hopefully having to come out because they failed to secure their helmet and it got knocked off will be enough encouragement for players to buckle all of the snaps and wear correct size headgear.

A Fark Handle: it's not a dumb rule. a helmet that is fitted properly and secured correctly rarely will come off during the course of play. however, if you watch players during close-ups you'll notice that many choose not to secure all of the chinstrap snaps and many players prefer looser helmets that are easier to slide on and off. both of those behaviors lessen whatever protection a helmet gives. if football leagues are going to pretend to be serious about head injuries getting players to wear proper fitting and correctly secured helmets is a must. hopefully having to come out because they failed to secure their helmet and it got knocked off will be enough encouragement for players to buckle all of the snaps and wear correct size headgear.

I'd think people would be pulling facemasks at the bottom of piles to get helmets off. I know the reason for it, but every time you make a rule for something, you have to consider how people are going to adapt to that. It actually gives you more of an incentive to try to pop someone near the head, too.

i thought the fact that no one investigated craig james for killing five hookers while at smu was the biggest controversy in football.

Well, in his defense, the yearly limit on strangled hookers at that time was six, so if you're looking to blame somebody, fingers should really be pointed at the NCAA. However, they did learn their lesson, since they've gradually reduced the limit over the years to where it's at now (which I believe is two hookers).

Hats to see the Bandy game end like that. A blown pass interference call and a missed holding call against SC could have changed the outcome. I hope the refs get reprimanded for that.

On a different note did anyone hear Lou Holt say Penn St. didn't violate any NCA rules and shouldn't have been punished? I guess knowingly let a pedophile use the team showers to rape children and allow him to get tickets to entice the children isn't a big deal

Um, you mean rewarded? They did what they always do, f*ck Vandy to help out whatever high-ranked team they're playing to prevent an embarrassing loss for the SEC.

I was at the game. That's the first time I've seen Vandy's stadium full. I also saw a PI no call clear across the field without my glasses.

Oh well. Let's get Northwestern next week.

Marquess Wilson makes a great play in the end zone, Pac-12 refs Pac-12 ref it, call a completely nonexistent hold to nullify it. F*ck Pac-12 refs. Stop consistently f*cking your own conference, assholes.

/more importantly, like I said, EWU is f*cking Idaho's world up despite a ton of penalties and some dumb mistakes

That was a hell of a catch. Too bad the PAC12 hired NFL replacement refs.

Nah, too bad the NFL didn't hire the Pac-12 refs away.

/also, the only reason Idaho is even within three scores in this game is because EWU hasn't bothered trying to pass on them in the 4th, with the score 20-3. That's how much they've shut the Idaho "offense" down.
//Idaho might finish fifth in the Big Sky if they dropped down to FCS this year.

But the 8-game SEC schedule is the toughest schedule in the world! Except Vandy. And Kentucky. And Ole Miss. And Mississippi State. And

It's over. It was on ESPN3. 20-3 final, wasn't that close. Idaho had one big play when EWU blew one coverage, got them into FG position. Idaho posted 10 first downs in 12 drives. That 66-yard reception on the blown coverage was more than 1/3 of their passing production (and another third came on the last couple drives when EWU went into more of a prevent).

OK, let's get this out of the way. Whoever wins the SEC west will be the #1 team in the nation. Alabama, LSU or Arkansas, one of those three.

Whatever team that is will kick the ever loving crap out of the SEC East champ in Atlanta.

Loser of that game goes to Sugar.

Winner goes to Miami.

Now. The question is, what team goes as the #2 or #3 to defeat them? USC is the popular choice. Oregon?

Any Big 10 fans can go ahead and shut down the computer. Since by the way, the schedule works, any team from that conference will have been already eliminated. Good luck in the Rose Bowl against the Pac 12 runner up.

Big 12 won't work either. Since, by the way, the way the schedule works, any team from that conference will have been already eliminated. Good luck in the Orange Bowl against Va. Tech..

I'm going with the winner of the SEC west vs. the whatever team shows up out of the Pac 12 - USC or Nike.

Whomever wins the SEC west, is by far, the best team in college football.
