It does happen sometimes. A few years ago one of my lecturers showed up complaining that Hitler had made him late for work. Seems that an unexploded bomb from the Blitz had been found that morning in East London.

A German doctor from Oberbayern I knew some years ago told me that he was shanghaied into the Luftwaffe in 1944 when he was 15 years old. They put him on a flak crew manning an 88 under a fanatical Nazi who would order them to stay at their posts no matter how close the bombs were hitting. During one American bombardment in early 1945 a nearby bomb explosion spit out a spinning whirling plate of jagged metal that cut the fanatical Nazi guy in half right at his waistline. The crew immediately abandoned their posts and ran for a shelter. I think his experiences as a 15 year old boy loading an 88 during carpet bombings really made an impression on him. He seemed to remember it like it was yesterday.

Seriously agreed... Do you know how many industrial cities were bombed specifically because their factories were producing weapons and other war equipment? Considering that, how many of the people working in those factories were military? I'm thinking almost zero...

They (farmers) in Belgium and Northern France are still digging up bombs and shells from WWI and those have been there shy of 100 years. It's odd to think that, but munitions from WWi and WWII are still killing people.

IMO though, the atomic bomb saved millions of people that would have been killed or starved if there was an Allied invasion of Japan. And imagine if the Soviets took over Hokkaido and northern Honshu? Fuhgeddaboutit.

That's great, I may have to go and see it, and throw stones at it, but why don't they just blow it up? I'm sure a torpedo or bomb could detonate it all and end the danger posed... for a while.

In many cases and only lead bombers would have a bombsight, the rest of the formation would just watch for the signal and flip their switch too. Throw in flak and well, yeah.

No, the other thing that this fellow seemed to remember quite clearly was the smell of dead and burning people wafting through Munich after the bombardments. I imagine he had pretty disturbing dreams all his life. His wife (also a doctor) mentioned the fear and terror they all felt in their little Oberbayrisch village when the first heavily-armed and combat-seasoned American "shock troops" pulled into town at the end of the war, and how roughly they treated the inhabitants at first.

But she had nothing but praise and admiration for the American occupation thereafter. They were all amazed at how the Americans, rather than punishing the people for the war, instead sent care packages and food and clothing, especially for the children - care packages sent by ordinary American citizens in addition to the official aid and supplies. I think they expected something quite different.



Interestingly, these older Bavarians blamed it all on the "Fishhead" northerners and Prussians, while the Northern Germans I spoke with blamed it all on the Austrians and Bavarians. Tribalism reigns supreme everywhere and always.
