Considering the demographic trends of the country, I'm surprised they haven't figured out something better than the Southern strategy. The reputation for racism is going to be remembered long after they find something to replace it.

That's gold, Jerry.

The fact that Palin doesn't have anything to do with this convention tells me they HAVE learned something.

I can't speak for other parts of the country, but as a 43 year old male from the southern U.S. I can say from personal experience there are a lot of racist republicans.

They've learned to keep the redneck base out of the spotlight. I can't think of anything else.

For instance, those guys who were throwing peanuts at the black camerawoman saying "this is how we feed animals" got thrown out of the convention instead of being made featured speakers says something.

I've met plenty of boldly racist Rebulicans - my family.

Funny thing about the most extreme down here in FL (non-family) is that the louder they are, the less likely they vote. Full of bile and ready to tell you about it, but too lazy to go pull the lever.

While pathetic, I'm totally OK with that.

Republicans tend to think that you have to wear a white hood and burn crosses to be a racist. Just thinking that black people want welfare because they are worthless and too lazy to work isn't racist to them, that's just the truth. If you think that isn't the truth then that's "political correctness".

They have learned something, keep going further right and further into whackjob territory. A friend of mine quotes this often and I think it applies. In "Little Big Man" Custer has a final conversation with Jack Crabb:

"You go down there, General, if you've got the nerve."

Republican platform 2012:

- Not #1 with racists, now just plain racist.
- Rape ain't no word I ever heard of
- No ankle display on wommens
- Homos are like insects, they multiply, only we don't know how yet. Perhaps some sort of eggsac. We have our pseudoscientists working on this.
- Global warming doesn't exist, but we should invade Canada, Russia, Iran, and Poland just to be sure
- Science is great as long as it agrees with our religious, racist agenda
- The Grover Norquist serial killer strategy for tax cuts
- The Ayn Rand strategy: Only the wealthy should pay very small taxes, because only the wealthy should be given currency
- Debt can be paid off by sending lazy brown people to other countries to work
- Anything not working is to be hung around Obama's neck blamed on Obama, regardless of decade or circumstance

Bingo.

Apparently, my family worked very hard to hide their racism from me while I was growing up. I have no idea why they would do that, nor why they would start letting it fly over thirty years later. I now have very little contact with any of them, although I still get those "FW: FW: FW: FW: FW:" emails.

They've learned not a damn thing. They've veered even further to the right. If Romney loses this year, 2016 is going to be worse than year, if that's even possible. Every loss to them = not right enough, so they'll swerve even faster in that direction. If this was happening in some other country, it would be hysterical to watch, but since it's happening in the one I live in, it's embarrassing, pathetic, and dangerous.

As a 47-year-old male from the Southern US, I can absolutely guarantee you without any question whatsoever that there are a lot of racist Republicans. I hung out with many of them as a young teenager, before having a moment of clarity around my 17th year. One of my best friends when I was about 15 went on to be a cop who used to, later on when I encountered him, literally cackle as he told me of the black suspects he had tased or beaten. His family was one of the wealthier in town, and they were quite, quite Republican. I knew others who lived in the town of Scottsmoor, FL, and anyone out there familiar with the area knows I don't have to elaborate.

At this point, I can't count the number of white Republicans who I've heard talking at school events or at the gym, who needed to point out vehemently how we needed to "Take OUR Country Back". You're not fooling anyone when you stammer that you're simply talking about reclaiming "values". You're talking about reclaiming it from the blah dude.
And they are quite happy to also explain that it's so cool that the US isn't racist any more -- after all, we elected a black president. The fact that "it didn't work out" isn't about race, though (murmur murmur). Then, virtually in the same breath, they'll excoriate Obama for only helping "his people".

Yeah, not racist.

As a 30 year old who has lived in Missouri, Wisconsin and Michigan, I can safely say I've never met a Republican that wasn't racist to some degree. They always deny it and say something like "well its true!" Or "stereotypes exist for a reason," but they are all racist.

As a 28 year old male from the southern U.S. I can say from personal experience that there are a lot of racist Republicans. Not very many open, simple minded "god-I-hate-them-attractive-and-successfuls" but class and race are so tied together, especially here, that they are conflated in a very ugly way for many people.

[Romney's] learned that the gloves are off. You can still do it and respect the presidency.

The GOP and it's followers have not done this since the man took office. The fact that they claim to be patriots while donning star spangled shorts is morally and intellectually loathsome.

You don't have to respect the man to respect the rank.......these farkers are tpathetic.

That'll do the trick...

Growing up in the MN, I haven't encountered too many RACISTS. I have encountered plenty of "i'm not racists but," folk.
The suburbs are chock full of folk who make racist jokes and get mad at political correctness if you don't laugh at a grape soda joke.
They also is a big contingent that refuses to go anywhere in the "city" because you will get shot.

Biggest thing I contend with commonly is anti-intellectual or anti-academic Republicans.
Scientists, researchers, and "academics" are all anti american i guess.

Yup. When I was 22 I worked in a department with a bunch of women from the burbs. They were absolutely astounded I lived in the central city and didn't have a car alarm or bars on my windows or carry a gun everywhere I went. And this was Austin, Texas!

I know Conservatives who have said ignorant, racist things. I also know white, liberal Democrats who think that all blacks and minorities think exactly the same, act the same, and eat the exact same things, and all have the same issues. Both attitudes are ridiculous.

Just to play devil's advocate for a bit, to a person old enough, that may be the truth. Southern Democrats were quite racist, but most of them left the party after the Democratic Party supported the Civil Rights Act, and Nixon's "Southern Strategy" began actively courting them.

Which doesn't make a damn bit of sense. Most people are in the middle. So if you need more votes, you have to move to the middle.

There aren't millions of Americans sitting around complaining that the parties aren't extreme enough. Anyone who thinks there are has no understanding of basic statistics. Which is probably part of the problem.
