Umm, not seeing a really serious problem here. Travelling on an expired visa is more problematic, not having got your passport reissued for a year after it expired and using it is hardly a big deal - certainly until all the older ones with less security have expired - although you would suggest it's a bad idea for a traveller to not notice it as if some border agent had a problem with it, it would be a lot of hassle and delays potentially.

I still don't see why that's such a huge deal. You don't stop being identifiably you just because an arbitrary date had been reached.

Despite attempts by the government to change things, you do NOT need a passport to leave the country.

The airlines only check so they don't get stuck with a passenger that will be denied entry into the destination country.
The TSA, are as you realize, idiots.

So an official passport used by the person it was issued to but a year out of date is comparable to a forgery?

Get a load of the drama queen we've got for a submitter, fellas.

I have traveled with a passport which did not match the first name on my airplace ticket. name. Potentially more of an issue, since I could have been someone else.

The Germans don't care that much, and the US cares when you're trying to ENTER the US.

"If you are a US citizen: You do not need a visa to travel to Germany, only a valid US passport. Make sure that your passport does not expire before the end of your visit in Germany."

"When Albright arrived in Italy, she realized her mistake."

To enter Italy, a passport valid for at least three months beyond the length of stay is required by all nationals referred to in the chart above, except EU nationals (1) holding a valid national ID card.

Italy DOES care that much.

Nothing to see here, move along.

TSA doesn't have anything to do with passports. That's immigrations and the airline ticket counters job. You actually are allowed to return to the U.S. on an expired passport as foreign countries can't block your return to your home country.

I know that some government agencies will accept an expired passport as a picture ID (such as for employment purposes). The TSA's purpose is to verify your identity, not to do border control for foreign governments. If they were really on top of things, though, they should warn the traveler that they wouldn't (or shouldn't) be allowed to pass the border checkpoint at their destination.

As has been mentioned, you don't need a passport to get out of the United States. You need one to get back in (and to get into other countries). The TSA doesn't operate in Germany so I don't see how being allowed entry to Germany has anything to do with the TSA or Homeland Security. And I don't see how it's the TSA's responsibility to make sure a traveler's documents are up to date if they're not relevant to the travel they're undertaking at that time. I'm not sure why a TSA agent would even be looking at the passport of a departing traveler. A courtesy, yes. Responsibility, no. I've only been out of the country half a dozen times and I know you don't leave the US without 6 months or more left on your passport. Who books a European tour without checking their passport?

BTW, there are still lots of valid old-school passports out there. Mine doesn't expire until next year and I think non-biometric US passports were issued until some time in 2007 so it'll be another 5 years before the last ones expire.

Just a guess, but maybe that's the photo id she offered to the agent that checks that ID and tickets match, since she would have to have her passport available anyway.

There's some stiff competition for the ranking, but this just might be the most (memorably) underwhelming story I've ever read on Fark.

It's nice to have valid identification, but it's not mandatory for flying if you're determined. Even across national borders. Though I suspect this lady didn't have an RFID-enabled passport. Otherwise, unless she was processed at Bob's Fish Shack & Custom's Station He Done Built, I'm under the impression that would come up automatically.

Would have been keen to get processed that speedily when State had put a hold on my passport, but the situations aren't exactly equal.

Technically SFO isn't TSA, look at their arm patches, it's a private company. Also, having a recently expired passport won't stop you from flying. Pretty dumb not to check your own before leaving the country though.

If she's anything like my wife, her driver's license is in a protective holder in an insert in her wallet, which is inside an interior pocket in her purse, which she has zipped inside her rolling carry-on so she has one hand free. As a general rule, I can fit an entire coffee break into the time it takes her to extract her license.

Meanwhile, her passport is in her hand along with her ticket, which is what 99.44% of people traveling internationally show when asked for picture ID, since they already have it available.

1) It's the Department of State who deals with passports.
2) The only time this would've been an issue in the US is when she came back and had to go through CBP. Those people don't mess around.

TSA is only for molesting air travelers, they don't do anything else (if and when they even do that.) That's it. Nothing more.

They expire so the government can pick up some change and train you to jump through flaming hoops. About $110 (close to your 60 pounds) for $0.30 worth of fancy paper and 78 seconds for a government worker to paste a picture in it between breaks. But for another $160 you can sign up for the "Global Entry" program and skip the line at Immigration. and for another $160 you can get a Transportation and Homeland Security will allow you to keep the job you've had for 20 years and for another $160 you can get a Concealed Carry Permit and be allowed to exercise your Constitutional Rights. It's about $afety you $ee.

tsa looks at a lot of passports in a day, including mine as i use it for my id when going thru tsa. it is a lot easier than to remove my license in my wallet and hand it over. a lot of foreign travelers have them in hand when they are traveling, and a lot of people who are traveling out of the country hand it to the ticket agent, hang on to it, then show it to the tsa. the machines to check in for the flight read the passports or scan them to find you and your flight.

it is kind of funny though to look at the tsa website, and they list all the id's that you can use, and even talk about not having id--which you can travel without one as well, but nothing says anything about expired id's.

I went to India earlier this year/late last year, and got a chuckle at their visa processing fees, nice racket they've got going there.

// they charge US citizens more than almost any other country, but some countries get in for free. This trend continued with higher entry fees for certain countries at national monuments, etc.
