to be fair, Goldwater has been a democrat for at least 2 decades now

Because being the descendent of a politician automatically makes you a political expert.

/and I say that as a Democrat.

Yet another example of the fun-time shenanigans at the RNC.

The results of the vote are on the teleprompter before the vote is taken.

Goldwater was right, but, then again, he also was the primary figure in the Southern Strategy to secure those votes. The votes decades ago aren't worth the pain today.

It's really interesting how people will vote for policy according to family tradition, as if it were the same thing as cheering for a football team because Grandpa used to do the same. I've always wondered though, when voters begin to think for themselves and vote differently from their parents, what proportion decide to shift from a Republican family to vote Democrat, compared with those who decide to veer from their family's Democrat history and vote Republican? I'm sure it's been studied before, but I decided to write this paragraph and waste about ten times the amount of time It would have taken for me to look it up in Google.

Eh. Voice votes are notorious for that sort of thing.

I heard an audio clip from one once; there were ten or so "ayes", and a loud chorus of "nays". The opinion of the chair, of course, was that the ayes had it. Best part? It was in the US House of Representatives.

I'm one of the libbiest libs that ever libbed a lib, and I can sorta give a pass on that.

You don't want to freeze while on stage and think "Oh shiat, now what?" I'd probably do that, I think I've come close to that with much smaller audiences.

Then again, I don't think I'll ever be asked to address an RNC or DNC convention.

Was he? As I recall (from writings), Goldwater wasn't a racist himself, just wouldn't lift a government finger to alleviate racism. LBJ famously said after signing the CRA that "We have just lost the South for a generation", but that was post 1964 (wasn't it?). I think Nixon (really, Atwater) was the first real beneficiary in terms of actually using the Southern Strategy. Goldwater's attitudes just attracted racists because neither wanted the government to do anything. For VERY different reasons.

and that's why you can't endorse him? Moron

I love how the GOP can lie about everything and not give a shiat but certain things are just so much more immutable, like polling numbers, GM still being alive, OBL dead and Romney is the best they could come up with.

As Atwater said(IIRC), it was very abstract. People equate things like states' rights and reduced/elimination of social spending to racism. If you drill down, those stances could be racist, or they could simply be because they truly believe in those principles. I don't know that Goldwater was racist, but he took advantage of ideas that he knew would attract racists in an area where people abused states' rights to enforce racially motivated policy.

Don't forget, Goldwater and John Dean were raging against the current GOP way back in the late 1990s. Dean's book Conservatives without Conscience was supposed to be co-authored with Goldwater until he passed in 1998.

Because the chances of differing political views after the better part of two generations are slim to none, right?

2012-08-30 11:18:41 AM
On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in "A," "B," "C" and "D." Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."

Exactly, Barry Goldwater wouldn't be anything close to a Republican in today's GOP. I don't know if the Democrats would welcome him with open arms, but he wouldn't be welcome in Tampa this week; that much is certain.

Goldwater would probably look like Huntsman or Johnson - sane, but economically Republican - assuming we correct for the fact that Goldwater's GOP was overall to the left of today's GOP (possibly left of today's Democrats as well).

CSB: one summer years ago i was running along hte potomac on that path where you can see the runners in the picture (nice sentence, me) and as i got closer, i saw a huge thing of super bright TV lights and camermen and a little group of people. as i got closer, i noticed it was Judy Woodruff. I was like, "whoa that's Judy Woodruff!" stopped and watched from a distance, then left.

wasn't until that night when I realized they were reporting on the XXth anniversary of the Watergate break-in.

I'm just commenting that the GOP hasn't really moved as far away from mainstream thinking as subby would imply, as evidenced by the fact that they kicked the democrats asses in the election two years ago.

Or is it your position that the rightward shift has only been in the last two years?

So, Barry Goldwater was about to write a book before he died about how Republicans are unwilling to compromise.

Several Reagan employees have come out to say that they're troubled that Republicans are unwilling to compromise.

Several Bush Sr. employees have come out to say that they're troubled that Republicans are unwilling to compromise.

John Roberts sided with liberals in saying that Obamacare is Constitutional because Republicans are unwilling to compromise.

Moody's downgraded the US's credit ratings because Republicans are unwilling to compromise.

Ron Paul isn't allowed to make a live speech because Republicans are unwilling to compromise.

Just for the fun of it, Google 'Democrats wont compromise'. It's pretty interesting.
