Street Fighter 2, on the other hand....

People gave a crap about Streetfighter?

SF2 however, that's the important one.

I have only seen one of those "Power Punch" machines. They look like they'd last about four months in any arcade.

Supposedly there were a few cocktails of SF2. Probably worth a bunch of money now.

That. I don't think I got a Nintendo until like 1989. For Super Mario Brothers. And Duck Hunt.

I played SFII a bazillion hours. I actually tried Street Fighter itself when I found a machine in the early 90s. After playing SFII for years, SF was unplayable.
Good luck throwing a fireball.

Man, I really need to pull my finger out and renovate my arcade machine before the battery in the cartridge dies. Just needs a new MDF control panel and some shiny new buttons/joysticks and it's good to go. But boy am I lazy.

I'm not sure if this is trolling or not.. Its Capcom not Konami and throw beats block, its like this in almost every fighter (I can't think of any that do not allow you to throw over a block). Throw beats block, blocks beats punch, punch beats throw.. imagine that.

wait wait wait, you're complaining you can't block a throw even though you let somebody get in real close where you could've kicked, or done a distance move right into a combo??

I remember back in the early 90's when street fighter 2 was hot and I was in an arcade and there was a street fighter game in the back that I found (the one with the huge buttons). I remember playing it once, because it was cheaper and there was no crowd. It was not as fun as SF2.

I still have a copy of Street Fighter on cassette tape for my Sinclair ZX Spectrum +3. Works fine.

Was my first one-on-one fighting genre game and I was able to even complete it. Had awesome 16 colour graphics.

The first felt more like a 'proof-of-concept' than a fully fleshed game. You didn't miss anything.

That said, either there are a lot of emotional morons in here, or there are a lot of SF2 playing trolls. Combos saved the genre, and throws/hits/blocks is the classic rock/paper/scissors foundation of gaming. If you can't wrap your head around this, go back to your Pacman.

Mortal Kombat, and MKII. It had chip damage from normals, though, so the game didn't come to a standstill. Turtling was still a problem in both games.

Killer Instinct didn't have any throws at all... God, what a turtling nightmare that game was.

I can't speak for what the rest of the world got but this is the first street fighter I saw.

www.arcade-museum.com
(sorry, best pic I could GIS)

Note, that it also had 2 buttons not 6. One for punch and one for kick. They were big mushy things (about the size of a small overturned bowl) that used how hard you hit them to determine punch strength and you had to hit it hard to get a reaction so you could get tired quick playing this game. I assume that the variable punching was supposed to be the novelty but this cabinet didn't get played much after the first game.

Months later I remember seeing the 6-button version and then I remember people starting to play it.

So, very true that they had much to work out still.

/My office is now in the space that arcade used to be in
//My desk is now 12' from where I first played that SF1 game

Mog32Kupo: Cammy is my girl too, my friend hates me for being such a rush-down

Cammy can be very powerful, but it's hard to beat the classic strengths of Ryu and Ken.

Part of the genius of the Street Fighter games is that they are generally well balanced. If you wanted to play as someone weak, you could still get well enough skilled and practiced to win a lot of matches.

I've been really happy how they've distinguished Ryu and Ken in the latter games. Given Ken more range and speed really makes them play quite differently.

/Prefers playing as Sakura because most people have little experience against her and get confused with her moveset.

Oh hell. I forgot about that travesty. Having played the 3D EX games, and even the Street Fighter The Movie: The Game I figured I was safe.

Two things about Street Fighter 2 stand out in my memory:

1. Every 7-11 had at least 3. Remember when 7-11s had arcade machines?

2. All the custom mods that started showing up after Champion Edition came out. Each mall arcade had their own modded machine. Eastridge Mall in San Jose had Ryu and Ken's zig-zagging fireballs that could be thrown from the air, Valco Mall had the hurricane kicks go from one side of the screen to the other and back.

Also, I played the game so much on the SNES that none of my friends were willing to play against me :(
Stupid sore losers.

Let's see, I've played:
Street Fighter
Street Fighter 2
SF2 Champ
SF2 Turbo
SSF2
SSF2 Turbo
SF Alpha
SF Alpha 2
SF Alpha 3
SF3
SF3 3rd Strike
SF The Movie The Game
SF EX
SF EX2

I have not played:
SF 2030
SF4 and all its variants; arcades are so damn hard to find, and when you do find them, they have older games. The death of the arcade is why fighting games are no longer as popular as they used to be.

Street Fighter IV is worth checking out. Just get a couple of good joysticks and a 360. The joysticks you can get nowadays (or mod yourself) use the same exact parts as their arcade counterparts.

I ended up having to let my friends pick my characters for me. I got damned good with Zangieff as a result. Not as good as with Guile and Ken though. SF2 was the last game my brother could keep up with me on. Damn Chun-li and getting trapped in the corner.

I played the original with the power punch buttons that hurt your wrists after the first round at a one of the dodgiest arcades in Times Square, with this runaway kid from ....somewhere. and then against the Tap Dance Kid, who was staring on Broadway at the time.... good times, good times
