That would be really cool if blue moons had any significance other than showing our calendars are not aligned with the lunar cycle.

So did Obama ever offer the family a state funeral? I know they'd probably decline it, but I'm curious if it was even formally offered.

I know that there has been some pressure for President Obama to make the offer, but Neil Armstrong was a very private man. It wouldn't have been the type of funeral he or his family would want.

Whew; I was afraid that the blue moon and the funeral services would coincide on different days.

"once in a blue moon" meaning the moon NEVER actually turns blue

I think it's awful that such a hero as Neil Armstrong can be stripped of his Tour De France titles so shamefully after his death....!

Nah, this one is better...

"But once in a blue moon I'll do something right
And Once in a blue moon I'll make her feel so fine
Cause I can make her laugh, oh And make her cry
She hates the way she loves me sometimes
But Once in a blue moon I'll do something right"

I ffel I need to point out here that the guitar solo in Sunshine Of Your Love is actually Clapton playing Blue Moon

This is NOT a blue moon dammit. FFS, Sky and Telescope will burn us forever with its stupidity. As long as media hypes, they will hype at any hype that's hypable.

Why yes, I am a f*cking astrosnob, why do you ask?
Fun at parties? What parties?

I know you're upset about Neil Armstrong, Liz, would you like to yell at the moon with Buzz Aldrin?"

"You dumb moon!"
"I walked on your face!"
"Don't you know it's day?!?"

Krieghund: That would be really cool if blue moons had any significance other than showing our calendars are not aligned with the lunar cycle.

This.

Also, this definition of a blue moon is based on a screwup in Sky and Telescope magazine in the 40's. An article on the old practice of naming full moons misread a farmers almanac and came up with the 2 in one calendar month definition. It somehow stuck.

It is a pretty neat thing to read. But one thing bothered me in the article...

FTA: "The moon actually won't be colored blue."

Really? I swore it would of been blue when it goes full for a second time.

Then again, the moon is most likely depressed (and now blue) cause the person it ever met has passed on.

And so the last hero falls. Good night, sweet prince.

I'm really looking forward to the release of that "Uno" "Dos" "Tre" thing from Armstrong's band. Thank God they got it done before he passed. . . .

There is no scientific evidence at all of a link between these two events.

2012-08-30 09:22:48 AM
Has anyone mentioned that this isn't really a blue moon? A blue moon is the third full moon in a season which contains 4 full moons. So as not to screw up the naming convention, the third full moon was called a blue moon and the next one went by its regular name (mid-summer moon, late summer moon, harvest moon, hunter's moon, etc.)

The next actual blue moon will be this time next year August 21, 2013. Obviously, the Grim Reaper is using Microsoft Outlook and got his dates screwed up.

2012-08-30 09:45:36 AM
It will be interesting to see what his tombstone will be. He should be interned at a nice mausoleum that has Saturn rockets as columns. A moon overhead with a little statue of him in his space suit would be cool too.

Knowing him and his family, it will be something simple.

One of the few men who could look up at the moon and say
"Been there,done that"

You sure about the 21st? We are going to squeeze a whole lunar cycle into 20 days next August?

Yeah - but that's like saying "I didn't offer to pick up the check, because I knew you'd pay." The offer should be made.

A blue moon is 4 full moons in a season. The Summer Season being defined as from the Summer Solstice [Friday June 21] to the Autumnal Equinox [Sunday Sept. 22]

There will be full moons on June 23, July 22, Aug 21, & Sept. 19. Since the August full moon is the 3rd of 4 for the summer, it is a blue moon.

Hey, Canadian engineers helped our Nazi engineers get us to the moon. I think we can celebrate together.
