Poorly implemented policy.

I think rounding to the nearest nickel should be a federal law. Get rid of pennies.

Loved it when I was overseas and VAT was included on all purchases.
Signs said 5 pounds and all you had to hand over was a fiver.
Was a godsend when you were loaded and ordering curry fries at 4am.

Chipotle restaurants routinely round up customer's bills to a nickel

My outrage is now 80% off.

They did that when I was stationed in Germany. It wasn't worth shipping over tons of pennies (everything on U.S. military bases in done in U.S. dollars). It was nice not having to deal with pennies.

Yeah I'd support this. Pennies are stupid and wasteful. They cost more than their face value, for Pete's sake.

You'd be surprised how quickly that will escalate into rounding to the nearest dollar.

In Japan, one yen is about one penny. (a little more because the dollar's weak) They have 1 5 10 50 100 and 500 yen coins.

Almost EVERYTHING in Japan from vending machines is 100 or 150 or 200. Even arcade machines can be 100 yen for a play. Popular machines, like the Gundam simulator, go up to 400 a play. In bars and restaurants, you have lots of 500 yen dishes.

You rarely see 1 yen coins except at convenience stores, and they're hard to get rid of if you get 'em. At the same time... everything is more expensive for the rounding.

I'll worry about that when we start rounding to the nearest half-dollar. You're seriously going to institute the "slippery slope" argument for this?

Until then, fark the pennies. I'm fine with them rounding to the nearest nickel.

2012-08-30 12:19:34 AM
Rounding to the nickel, maybe OK. Rounding to the quarter? Uh-uh. Nope. Sorry. I worked as a line-service restaurant cashier for a few years, and I can understand the temptation to kill the pennies when you're in a hurry. But having gotten the corresponding paychecks, I can understand customers being tightfisted with every nickel.

It's not an argument, it's a statement of fact observed daily.

I don't CARE if people round to the nearest dollar. I don't care if we switch to golden rings or rupees (the Zelda kind) as currency. As long as I have enough of said currency to live my life I'm happy.

I'm just telling you what will happen.

It's good quality food.

It's not authentic Mexican, so if that's what you're looking for then go somewhere else.

It's fast food done Mexican style.

All the ingredients are made in front of you if you go at their rush hour time.

I have never understood the Chipotle hate.

Hell, we used to have farking mills. A mill coin was named due to the denomination (mill=1/1000 of a dollar), or 1/10 of a cent.
So yes, we went from rounding to a 1/10 of a penny to rounding to a 1/2 a penny to finally a full penny, and somehow its still taken us 150 years to even attempt to round to the nickel - which is now worth far less than a 1/2 cent was back then.

The slippery slope argument doesn't really apply here, especially when considered for value. By the time we get to rounding to the nearest dollar it will only be because the dollar is the smallest reasonably functional currency unit, worth less than a nickel is today.

Your statements do not support this theory. You're comparing the price of things to the minimum unit of currency; the two are not fundamentally related. Only if you're only buying small numbers of a low-value items does the minimum unit of exchange become an issue, but that's not the typical case -- there are very few transactions currently taking place at less than $0.05.

First thing they ask you is white or brown rice.

Just tell them which kind you want.

Then say "half rice".

They will only put a half a spoonful of rice on your tortilla.

After that they move the burrito down the line.

When the next person asks you what kind of meat you want you tell them, and they will put more meat on the burrito because they see that there isn't much rice.

I've eaten at many Chipotle restaurants and I've never seen them not put extra other ingredients in the burrito if you ask for less rice.

It's like a competition to see how much food they can stuff in the burrito before the last person in the food line can wrap it without ripping the tortilla.

Also, don't get the pico.

At the current rate of inflation, it will take at least 5 years for a dollar to be worth less than a nickel is today. Not worth looking that far into the future.

Oh. Ha, sorry. No, I don't like the rice at all. I don't like lime, and I like cilantro even less. The meat and cheese and wrapper is okayish, but I loves me plain ole mexican yellow rice. Also, there's a KC local place called Los Corrales that just dominates and I often order a whole plate to go with whatever I get there. In short, I only go to Chipotle the odd times my wife wants it.

In short, my main problem is Chipotle's rice, cause I like rice.

I read the rest of your post, but you shouldn't be eating at Chipotle and spending 7 bucks for rice if that's all you're after.

There's a lot of money to be made in half-nickels. WHERE DO THEY ALL GO??

Hmm, Chipotle's claims 750,000 customers per day... if party-of-3 is average, that's 91.25M bills per year. If 2.5 cents- half a nickel- were skimmed off the transactions, that's... $2.3M USD per year!

Who the Fark cares? Chipotle could raise their prices by 2 cents and no one would freak out, but if they take 2 extra cents to make things simpler for both of you then people throw a fit? The only people who should care about this are state tax officials who would want to make sure Chipotle pays sales tax on any money from this rounding.
