We still have NASA? I thought we gave it up for tax cuts, wars, national security, and health care.

Can anything good come from Mars?

Kudos to his agent for negotiating this, but really? DIAF attention whore.

okay, well this is still kind of cool. I wish they went with someone classier or a band/artist that has had space inspired songs in the past, but still kind of cool.

On his own dime, he encourages kids to give a damn about science and math. The whole broadcast the single from Mars thing was cheesy but I'll cut him some slack based on having the right focus.

I do not like them, will.i.am!

It's a brilliant move, using Mars as a decoy - If intelligent life picks up that signal anywhere, they'll be sure to nuke it at the source.

We get to find out about extraterrestrial life while managing to spare Earth.

Exactly. Or if they were worried about aiming it to kids and not upper 20s and up people, then mgmt or something.

WTF Nasa? There are so many other actual songs, by people with musical talent, that you could have chosen.

Space Truckin' by Deep Purple
Space Oddity by David Bowie
Shooting Star by Bad Company (ok, so not exactly a space song, but good title, god anything better than rectal droppings by Will.i.am.Not)

Why the hate for Will.I.Am? I have always found most of the Black Eyed Peas' music to be catchy and fun.

But I guess the world would suck if we all liked the same things. I tip my hat to your different tastes in music.

George Clinton would have been much more appropriate. In case of alien contacact, we might have actually established a mothership connection,

Blacked Eyes peas have some catchy songs but the group themselves rip off other artists and are an extremely pretentious and annoying bunch. Would like to kick em all in the face if I could. :)

Catchy and fun? Possibly, depending on the listener. But also rather devoid of meaning or culture. Not exactly what we should be leading with in the whole intra-galactic communication thing.

I'm not a fan, but I agree.

Yeah, they could have used David Bowie... If they were trying to appeal to old men.

I used to have 'hate' for Will I Am. I never cared for the music of the BEP and they just seemed to be a bunch of pop wastoids. Then I saw him actually talking about getting kids involved in math, science and technology. He actually admits he doesn't know much of these, but understands that for most kids won't be pop stars like him, but they can get good jobs and careers in STEM. He actively uses his money and fame to promote that kids do more with the life and to look at people like the NASA scientists that can broadcast tune from another planet as role models.

I find his attitude hard to fault.

highendmighty: "I was going to go with Pink Floyd, but Bowie would have been a MUCH better choice."

Count me in as a vote for the Floyd, too. "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" or "Saucer Full of Secrets" would seem to fit the bill. Not as good lyrically as Bowie, but it has the space theme to it. Then again, maybe Syd's "Astronomy Domine" would be even better.
