I predict some serious FAIL unless Whedon tones it down so much that there are no superheroes in the show. The reason Firefly could work on a budget is because no one had superpowers.

Hopefully it won't suck, but I think the whole idea of SHIELD is because of all the awesome superheroes. SO without them, they're a bunch of assholes in suits. Like Men In Black except without the wit.

WIthout Samuel L Jackson or Colbie Smulders it'll be nothing but a b-team of TV rejects on another Whedon project that gets either cancelled or he hands it off to Marti Noxon and she makes it suck.

The cast of How I Met Your Mother is only under contract for one more season, and although CBS is interested in renewing them it seems as if everyone else is eager to move on to new projects. They very well could get Colbie Smulders to helm this new show.

3. It will run for a dozen episodes before being cancelled in favor of another crappy reality TV show.

I'm ok with this...

Eliza Dushku : The top billed star that Whedon likes to kill off in the first episode
Adam Baldwin : Kickass S.H.I.E.L.D. agent
Felicia Day : Kooky lab girl / Q
Summer Glau : One time guest star
Amy Acker : Maria Hill's (played by Cobie Smulders) love interest and Hydra double agent

No Hasslehoff

Why doesn't he go the cable route? Whedon's stuff isn't gonna get big audiences anyway and there are fewer issues with interference, quick cancellation, etc.

/Starz, for example, orders full seasons - no pilots or any of that crap

I would use this to promote the feature films, the same way professional wresting uses TV to promote pay-per-view events. Introduce characters and plots on a weekly basis, but instead of having the big event/battle in the season finale put it on the big screen. That's a great way to build the fan base for the show and the films simultaneously.

Is there any example of a big budget, special effect intensive, tv show succeeding on network TV? All the successful ones I can think of were on HBO.

The closest I could think of was Lost and even there the special effects amounted to a smoke monster.

Based on Whedons track record that is unlikely, at least for the regulars. When he started Firefly none of the regulars he hired had worked for him before, except Summer Glau who had a single guest appearance with two lines in an episode of Angel. And again with Dollhouse none of the regulars he hired had worked with him before, though there were a few recurring ones like Amy Acker and later Summer, Alexis Denisof and Alan Tudyk.

And Whedon didn't hire Eliza Dushku for Dollhouse. It was her deal with Fox and she got him on board. Once he was in charge all the regulars he hired were people he'd never worked with before.

Did the film you saw star Uma Thurman and Sean Connery by any chance?

I personally think she's a good actor but she's one of those actors that you only ever see 'them'. Like Sean Connery or Sam Jackson. No matter whether they are playing a Russian sub captain or an Egyptian immortal you just think "That's Sean Connery".
Enver Gjokaj knocked it out of the park with his acting as different characters, but how much of that was helped by none of us having seen him before? To us he was a blank slate and we could accept him playing anyone. With Dushku we knew her and so no matter what role she was playing we just saw "Eliza Dushku"

Maybe you're right. Maybe she worked as Faith because I hadn't seen her before and kick-ass chick can be hard to pull off but she did. I just found that in Dollhouse her face wasn't expressive enough and as long as she was being asked to be kick-ass she was fine. It could have also been the material which I didn't think was very good and therefore she wasn't given much to work with. I'm blanking on an actress that could have made Dollhouse work. Dushku or no, I'm still watching. That's not even a question.

She did well enough in film (especially the opening scenes) to earn a place on the show. Season One features one cast member who is designed to be killed off during the season finale. She could sign on at the start of Season Two and stay for the rest of the series' run.

Cobie Smulders is one strong leading lady, or at least i think she has the potential to be.

Make her and Coulson the main characters with the ocassional cameo from big stars and this could go somewhere. It's been a while since he's had a TV show, he's got a bunch more connections and contacts, and he's got way more resources this time. All he really needs to do is navigate the CBS red tape around HIMYM and this could be real.

It has potential. Until we really learn more that's all i'm holding my hopes to.

Amy Acker could have made that work, check out some of her work on Angel when she is switching between Fred and Illyria. With just expressions on her face, tone of voice, and body language she is very convincing as two different people.

Agree. She nailed that. Word is that the next season would have seen a lot more switching between the two as Fred's personality resurfaced.

When even Fox admit they made a mistake cancelling the show you know they made a huge mistake....

For everyone who claims that Samuel L. Jackson won't be a part of this, how do you know?

He does commercials for Apple and he's hosted the Espys - THE ESPYS!

I'm not saying he'll be in every episode but I'm sure that SLJ would show up for an episode or two during Sweeps just to pop the numbers.

It's possible, but don't forget Apple could have paid him millions of dollars to do a single commercial, more than the entire budget for a whole episode of a TV show.

The suggestion of Chloe Moretz as SG is solid as well.

But really we need Coulson to make this show work. Either have him be a LMD or reveal the one who died was an LMD.

Off screen death, i know how Joss likes to play camera tricks with us to make us think something bad happened. Fury could have told the Avengers that he died to inspire them in their time of need. Dead or not - it worked.

Until we see our hero's mourning the loss of a great agent at their grave, he could still be kicking. He's a tough bastard - a devoted one.

Then you get the Smallville effect. You are constantly constrained by having to make everything fit into the future they already know. Can't kill so and so, can't do this, can't do that...

Few things:

Coulson's death was forced by Marvel. Joss said he tried to get out of it because he was getting a reputation. So Marvel obviously already had a plan for him (Vision?) I would actually hate the idea of the guy getting killed being a LMD.

IF they plan out the seasons before hand, they could easily get RDJ, SLJ or any others to green-screen, voice overs (for phone calls) and such for a day to sprinkle through the season. I would hope that cut footage from the movies would be fair game. That would depend on the contracts.

Someone mentioned the idea of making this a like a police procedural. I think that could work. Or team based espionage like MI or Alias.

If this was a prequel showing the construction of the LMDs, that would be cool as well.

I'm very ok with this

Why does ABC always preface shows with "ABC's so-and-so"? It's never just "Nashville", it's "ABC'S NAshville". I know it's branding but it's annoying.

The SHIELD show would be fun just to do one-shots with different heroes. Like one week, SHIELD is dealing with a deposition via Jennifer Walters. The next week, Namor, played by this guy:

MadSkillz: MeinRS6: I predict some serious FAIL unless Whedon tones it down so much that there are no superheroes in the show.

Why wouldn't Cobie be in it?

Expolaris: Make her and Coulson the main characters with the ocassional cameo from big stars and this could go somewhere. It's been a while since he's had a TV show, he's got a bunch more connections and contacts, and he's got way more resources this time. All he really needs to do is navigate the CBS red tape around HIMYM and this could be real.

It's only been two years since Dollhouse.

2012-08-29 02:05:11 PM
Cobie Smulders could certainly be involved. Everything I hear around HIMYM is that they all want to wrap up the story this season, and from the end of Season 7 it looked like they were heading there in a big way. (As someone else pointed out--he has to have his first kid soon, since the kids in the framing story look 15-16 in 2030, so they need to be born by 2015.)

And yeah, I think this could be an excellent vehicle for all of the fan service and minor characters and second tier heroes and stuff, maybe even piloting them in the series to see how well they're received before adding them into one of the movies. The guest shots with marquis names is easily doable to, and could spice up the proceedings nicely.

2012-08-29 02:26:00 PM
I'm expecting some kind of X-files like show - Coulson in the movies seemed to be hunting down artifacts, tracking heroes, gathering intel on threats - not actively engaging.

Could be fun, and not require a summer blockbuster budget.

Cite? Because had Firefly not been cancelled then there is no way they'd have been able to appear of Buffy or Angel. I've never seen that suggested anywhere. The closest I've ever seen to that is that Nathan Fillion auditioned for the role of Angel, but didn't get the job. And I seem to remember that Joss didn't even remember that until after he got the role of Mal on Firefly.
Checks Google: Video from the horses mouth. Joss didn't even know Nathan auditioned until after he got the Firefly role.

For every episode in the first season, they should have a situation where the plot could easily be resolved in five minutes by use of a helicarrier. Someone points this out, and then someone else says, "Oh, yeah, the helicarrier is on assignment in Ecuador." "The helicarrier is in the shop." "The helicarrier pilot is in his FAA-mandated rest period." Etc.

Then for the season finale, the helicarrier just shows up for no reason in a plot that doesn't require it, and hovers in the background.

Joss needs to bring in Jim Steranko as a story advisor, seeing as he pretty much created the look and feel of SHIELD HYDRA and AIM. The man is a graphical genius and his run on Nick Fury in the 60' doesn't get near the credit it deserves.
