Or perhaps the fricken generators they're running? Cheap ass generators don't have the pollution controls semi-modern cars have. I've read that they can release as much pollution as 1k properly operating 10 year old cars. And no, I'm not talking about the carbon monoxide the mother is worried about. There's also sulfur compounds, NOX, etc.. Carbon Monoxide will kill you, but it's because it displaces oxygen in the blood stream.

If they have a 'permit' to grow, why do they even need to run generators between 6 am and 9 pm? Why not grow it on a proper farm or in a proper greenhouse that gets 90% of it's light from the sun? We're talking Arizona here! You shouldn't need grow lights, just a few valves and pumps if you're doing hydroponics/automatic watering.

This is why I want the shiat *legalized*, not 'decriminalized'. Production, distribution, and sale needs to be at least as legal as tobacco and alcohol. That way you don't have people doing things like this that would be crazy uneconomical and polluting if it wasn't for the illegality increasing the price and keeping OSHA and the EPA away. Oh yeah, and it'd kill a lot of the violence due to organized crime that currently handles much of the black market, which legalizing small personal amounts wouldn't get rid of.

Possibly with fertilizers, though most growers I know use only neem oil as a pesticide, and stay away from harsh chemical fertilizers as it ends up affecting finished product even after a week's worth of flushing. Harsh, chemically-tasting weed is just no good. Your best fertilizers are bat guano and worm castings. Damn near perfect PNK if you're growing in soil.

I drive by TWO large, legal grow co-ops on my way to work each day, and live within a couple blocks of one of them and walk by the place routinely.

I highly, HIGHLY (no pun intended) doubt that the problem relates to the marijuana itself and their proximity thereto. It's much more likely that the generators and related pollution is causing the health issues, and it definitely NEEDS to be addressed. I'm all for legalization, medical marijuana, and the whole nine yards, but polluting the neighborhood is not acceptable.

That is entirely understandable. Even being next to an outdoor grow area MAY be plausible.

The idea being floated around that an enclosed grow house is going to cause neighbors to get sick because of the faint odor of marijuana is pretty silly. Again, considering the generators (and the fact that something caught on f*cking FIRE), I'd say there are more likely culprits.

Because he likely has no idea wtf he is doing and reading between the lines a bit, it is a fair assumption he did a bunch of non-permitted or to code electrical work, he already started one fire. Now he can't get the electric back on because of permit problems (most likely due to non-code work that is unsafe). So that jackass gets a bunch of generators he runs all day long. Now your kids are getting sick and it smells horrible. Do you still support this guy?

There is a reason we have zoning and business regulation laws. If the guy wants to grow for personal consumption fine. Once you get to a commercial scale this doesn't belong in a house and should be regulated like any other commercial farm.

I blame the reporters, they haven't asked the right questions again. One call to city hall could of found out what permits he has or hasn't pulled and why he is failing to get his power on.

And I partially agree NickelP, but only because these people are likely violating a few codes somewhere. I actually have a "conservative" viewpoint that property restrictions are too harsh in this country, so long as harm is not done to a neighbor (and property value in and of itself should not be counted as harm [unless the opposite can be true, and people must pay fees to neighbors if they sell their house for an inflated price due to neighborhood appearance]... sorry that the guy next door has a purple house, deal with it). In this case, clearly they're doing something wrong. Hell, if nothing else, generators cause a lot of noise.

And I mean, if this place has "customers" coming and going like a traditional commercial business, that too should be considered "harmful" to a neighbor or neighborhood, moreso than just what's being grown inside (whether it be lettuce or medicinal marijuana).

I don't know why ya'll gotta get so offended: Cannabis plants belong away from residences. Worker allergy is a big problem in indoor farms, and motivates air filtration nearly as much as stealth does. Curiously, the immature plants are often the culprit. The resins in cannabis evolved to protect its highly nutritious seeds from birds, so noxiousness is central to the scheme. The oil in the seeds is light, and birds need oil to make their feathers aerodynamically efficient.
Besides the psychoactive resin in the plant, there is also 'stem oil,' which seems nasty by nature. If these people move out, and their symptoms remit, then likely this is their problem.
Anyway, this woman is well within her rights to complain, she isn't seeking the diminution of her neighbors rights, she is simply trying to compel her neighbor to operate with less collateral. He should get a detached house and an electrician. Those who do not have direct experience of these situations are offering opinions without evidence.
