radarlove: tko78: Blisters on the back of the throat? Chlamydia of the throat? Tell your husband to stop feeding junior the cak...

I hate to admit it, but that was my immediate thought as well.

thisispete: Depending on the kind of fertilisers and pesticides used in the operation, an adverse health reaction from some kind of chemical is credible.

Possibly with fertilizers, though most growers I know use only neem oil as a pesticide, and stay away from harsh chemical fertilizers as it ends up affecting finished product even after a week's worth of flushing. Harsh, chemically-tasting weed is just no good. Your best fertilizers are bat guano and worm castings. Damn near perfect PNK if you're growing in soil.

Flowering cannabis does smell rather strong though, and it is possible that the child has a very sensitive nose and throat. S/he may very well be allergic to cannabis.

My wife is allergic to cannabis - she gets into huge coughing fits whenever she smells it - either as a plant or as smoke. Needless to say, we won't have a medical marijuana grow op in our attic any time soon.

It's nothing a little medicinal marijuana won't cure.

PreMortem: "What other kind of chemicals are they going to grow..."

Hydrogen dioxide. Better buy gas masks for your chilluns.

Hydrogen Dioxide would be fairly dangerous, as it would not be a particularly stable molecule and would be fairly reactive.

I assume you are referring to how heavily abused access to medical marijuana is, not refuting the actual medicinal attributes of marijuana.

Jim_Callahan: AverageAmericanGuy: Time to go see a different doctor.

No, time for her to go back to kindergarten to learn that when her doctor says "irritation from an unknown source" and tells her to give the kid some cough drops, that doesn't mean that the kid is suffering from some mysterious chemical exposure and there's nothing medical science can do, it means that the symptoms are so easily treatable that it's not worth the effort to identify the irritant. you're a crazy helicopter parent and the doctor is going to prescribe a bullshiat fix for a non-existent problem because he doesn't want to have to hear the sound of your voice any longer than is absolutely necessary.

SharkTrager: radarlove: Flowering cannabis does smell rather strong though, and it is possible that the child has a very sensitive nose and throat. S/he may very well be allergic to cannabis.

Or, as is often the case with allergies, a parent is convinced the child is having a reaction and attributes everything to that reaction.

Quite true. Those with Allergen Hysteria seem to vastly outnumber those with genuine severe allergies, and do people with severe allergies a great disservice with all of their paranoid hooplah.

Bob16: radarlove: Flowering cannabis does smell rather strong though

Wrong. Depends on the variety. Some very strong types have very little smell

This is also true. My apologies, I should have said CAN smell very strong. But let us be honest here- these guys with their generators and faulty wiring, and most likely no carbon filter, trying to run an indoor grow in Arizona in the summer, are probably not growing G13 or Flo in there. They're probably goring something hearty but nasty.

Then again, I'm making a lot of assumptions about their grow, but it certainly doesn't seem to be a very professional one.

I know a guy who is growing m.j. legally. There are times of the year I don't go to his house because the resin smell is so strong that my throat constricts. This guy just grows small plants in normal potting soil. When there is money involved, there are going to be chemicals, so I can see how this woman is concerned. Add to that, her baby is showing some alarming symptoms. I don't blame her for being a mama tiger protecting her kid. It's her job as a human being.

You cant be allergic to marijuana. You can be sensitive to carbon monoxide or allergic to it. You can be sensitive or allergic to pollen(but most people grow females, pollen ruins marijuana) Seriously, link me a documented case of it. You cant find it because its impossible and any study would show its the TERPENES that would cause a reaction, not the marijuana itself. The same reason people are allergic to perfumes and other smelly crap. Someone who supposedly has an allergy wouldn't have any problem around terpene free marijuana.

Contents Under Pressure: When there is money involved, there are going to be chemicals

Not necessarily. Cannabis is a very sensitive plant, and harsh chemicals or shifts in pH can outright kill it very easily. Of course, these guys don't seem like the most experienced growers, so who knows.

c4rr0tc4k3: You cant be allergic to marijuana.

You can develop an allergy to damn near anything, but in this case you are correct that she would be smelling the terpines (mainly beta-caryophyllene) produced by the plant and not the actual plant itself. Terpines are found in a very wide array of plants and insects, and if she has a serious sensitivity to them it could be a possible cause, though again my money is on the generators.

I have personally never heard of a terpine-free cannabis plant, and I've studied and bred a lot of strains.

yes, it could be candida too. Tonsilitis is like a pneumonia. It's a physical condition caused by something else. Whatever, it's not the sweet, sweet smell of weed.

Lets try some mad lib substitution.

"Mother worried that the odors coming from her neighbor's tomato farm are making her child sick. "The doctor said he's got blisters on the back of his throat and they don't know why"

Yeah, that isn't that exciting, is it?

I suppose if I were sure that my kid was getting sick from a neighbors legitimate business, I'd have to move. That whole 'marijuana' thing doesn't seem to be any portion of the issue here.

AbbeySomeone: If only the grower was in a place with vacant land and plentiful sunlight.

Like the farm or greenhouse I mentioned?

The average person running a grow op may or may not be an idiot. This particular grower though, IS an idiot. A greenhouse isn't that expensive to construct.

Hell, Harbor Freight has a 6x8' greenhouse kit available for $300(48 sqft, $6.25 per sqft). A 10x12' for $650(120 sqft, $5.42). Suddenly you don't need any grow lights(in Arizona), thus no fire from overloading your electrical, thus no need for generators, no fuel bill, no huge electric bill, etc... If people don't like the smell, stick a carbon filter and fan on the system.

If you're going to do it in a residential area, be a polite neighbor - put a high fence up(so your semi-legal activity isn't in their face), put the stuff in a greenhouse so you aren't setting fire to stuff/wrecking the house(if the FBI raids, they just take the greenhouse), etc...

MycroftHolmes: Hydrogen Dioxide would be fairly dangerous, as it would not be a particularly stable molecule and would be fairly reactive.

Considering that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is indeed very reactive when pure enough, I'd imagine that hydrogen dioxide(HO2) would be _very_ reactive.
