I drank some Shasta, does that count?

2012-08-28 04:54:26 PM
Yeah, I'm going to guess the kid had very little say in any of this.

2012-08-28 04:56:01 PM
Well at least I didn't spend three years climbing a mountain that's not even 5000m high.

2012-08-28 05:22:01 PM
Isn't that like a day trip?

2012-08-28 05:33:26 PM
Doing more interesting and productive things than climbing a stupid ass mountain.

Darn it! It's like arriving at a party and seeing someone else in the same dress.

2012-08-28 06:27:07 PM
Well, I did a 36km (22.4 mile) hike this past weekend and I'm going to summit a 2084m (6837.27ft) tall mountain this coming weekend. So that's a start, I guess.

2012-08-28 06:28:21 PM
Hiking to the top of Shasta isn't exactly a big deal, especially in August.

I guarantee he's not the youngest person to do it.

2012-08-28 06:29:31 PM
If it took 3 years for him to get up there, he'll probably be ready for high school by the time he gets down

2012-08-28 06:38:03 PM
Damn, Ninja!

No. If you climbed the can, then it would count.

2012-08-28 06:41:52 PM
Look out, kid. It's all down hill from here.

2012-08-28 06:42:11 PM
I climbed Lassen around 6th grade.

This kid puts me to shame.

2012-08-28 06:44:08 PM
I climbed to the summit of Mt. Shasta at age nine. Didn't know it was that big a deal.

/srsly

I drive by Shasta a lot...smoked weed in Weed and looked at the mountain a bunch. Good enough for me.

2012-08-28 06:54:39 PM
I popped the top of a Mt. Dew, so there.

I climbed Baldy at 13, as did thousands of others.
Some younger.

Philmont. Colfax county, NM. Outside of Cimmaron.
It's in New Mexico. You wouldn't know it.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Time to die.

I do useful stuff that benefits society and not for my own ego.

If you look at TFA, looks like it was written/submitted to some local paper by his dad. No bets as to who then submitted it to Fark.

2012-08-28 07:37:55 PM
I hear mountain climbing pays great these days.

2012-08-28 07:40:51 PM
I was raised by non-attention whore parents who let me run around outside and play with my friends instead of convincing me I wanted to engage in dangerous challenges so they could bask in my reflected glory.

When I was six I rode a horse named "Shasta".

/He was named that because he farted when he cantered
//Seriously

2012-08-28 07:45:15 PM
More than that kid. I've got 20 years of accomplishments on him. I've also never wasted 3 years of precious yoot climbing up a big rock.

2012-08-28 07:48:53 PM
I took a shasta this morning....was very satisfying.

2012-08-28 07:51:08 PM
I was carried to the top of Mt. Shasta in a sedan chair by a small herd of Sherpa children, it gave me a chance to eat grapes and take in the views.  Thanks plucky youngsters!  The check is in the mail!  Sorry those Hershey kisses gave you the runs.

Except that it is the camping mecca of the Boy Scouts on the west coast.

Taste your embers to make sure they're out

Philmont is NOT obscure...

I've done something far more useful with my life than climbing a mountain.

2012-08-28 08:21:46 PM
Oh, sh*t. We're supposed to do something with our lives?

I'm still in my goddamn bathrobe. I was waiting for you to dry your hair.

2012-08-28 09:25:46 PM
I climb a 300ft ladder a few times a day, every day at work if that counts.

2012-08-28 09:28:30 PM
Well recently, I dug some wells so some people didn't thirst to death in Africa. I guess climbing a mountain is useful too.

2012-08-28 09:28:59 PM
man, kids take such tiny steps, 2.5 miles in 3 years

2012-08-28 09:29:09 PM
My nine-year-old trained for three weeks and ran a 5k. That's more than 16,000 feet.

2012-08-28 09:29:27 PM
I listened to some Shostakovich recently...

I never made it to baldy, but I did walk some of those trails

/was fun, but I shouldn't have gone at 14

2012-08-28 09:30:57 PM
Meh, that's just over half a foot an hour.

2012-08-28 09:31:36 PM
Did he leave his dog up there?

2012-08-28 09:31:53 PM
I put up with that biatch for 6 years. That's what I did.

2012-08-28 09:32:01 PM
Jumped out of airplanes, kayaked up a river, flew in a hot air balloon, scuba dove, helmet dove, fell in love with a girl, snorkeled, rode in a submarine, rode on boats, had a threesome, kayaked in the ocean, fired guns, shot arrows, built computers, survived being t-boned by a motor home, wrote half a dozen engineering applications, earned hundreds of thousands of dollars, got hundreds of greenlight articles on Fark, replaced water stop valves, replaced a knock sensor, replaced a thermostat, baked pizza from scratch, made ice cream from scratch, etc etc etc.

I'm trying to get on Sasha since I was 11.

Why did the nine year old climb mount Shasta?

2012-08-28 09:37:06 PM
at that age i let myself in the house after school and began dinner for my family, subby. i wasn't out having fun climbing rocks. i was making sure Dad had a hot meal when he got home from operating a shiatload of deafening high speed looms in a mill.

frickin' kids nowadays have no clue.

2012-08-28 09:38:23 PM
I graduated from one of the best engineering schools in the country with one of the hardest degrees available. I worked my dream job for 4 years. I have also paid off my student loans and the loan for my first car.

Now, I work from home most days and play golf when its sunny.

I did not climb a mountain when I was a kid.

2012-08-28 09:39:08 PM
So it took him three years? Shouldn't this kid have been in school?

2012-08-28 09:39:24 PM

I watched every episode of Shasta McNasty, which I guarantee was more grueling.

2012-08-28 09:43:34 PM
Something far more important that climbing a hill. I was creating them.

2012-08-28 09:44:26 PM
I can wear my velcro sneakers no problem.
