Yeah, well... at the time it sure is nice...

It is. I am a Mainer who now lives in Mass so I have lost the correct snow perspective. What once was a nice, earth-covering blanket of warming white goodness is now a "Shut. Down. Everything" level event.

i moved from northwest iowa to texas. my first week here it snowed 4 inches and school was canceled for AN ENTIRE WEEK. i'm not joking when i say i have walked to school in snow deeper than that.

Last year in my area (Washington Cascades), "Snowtterdammerung" seemed to catch on.

The Snow End Of All Things... two feet of powder with two inches of solid ice on top that shattered half the broadleafs in the forest and knocked out power for a hair under a week. Seemed apropos.

You missed this from the FA:

According AccuWeather.com's forecast,

At that point, you should have stopped reading. Accuweather doesn't have real meteorologists. Their accuracy has always been horrible. They sell weather report scripts and sensationalist weather "news" to radio and TV stations, newspapers and BS websites. That's all the do.

I'm in NC, we're lucky if we get one or two decent snowfalls a year... last year snothing, as CarnySaur termed.

If there's a forecast for good snow, I make sure I get Kraken's Black Rum, a bag of apples and Real™ butter... make homemade spiced apple cider, listen to black metal and smoke a cigar in the whiteness. It's perfection.

That is a proper way to enjoy a snowstorm.

Now that is funny.

The two major problems we have here in MA when it snows are the traffic (already bad, just gets much worse) and the power outages. I have lived here for 15 years and every year the same thing happens- trees grow taller, branches get heavy with snow and ice and the power lines come down. You would think the spring, summer and fall would be enough time to trim the old trees and overhanging branches back. But no, tree-lined lanes are so quaint!

When the power goes out I just fire up the little Honeywell 3000W generator and ride it out in my cocoon. Except those times when the interwebs goes out too. Those are the stabby times.

I am sure this year will be different though.

This sounds great! I've never made cider, got any tips or recipes? Your whole plan sounds awesome, but I can figure out the other two.

MAYORBOB: Because the Pirates are going to be in the MLB Playoffs-

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oh, how cute. Someone who actually thinks that the Buccos will make the playoffs. Oh, sure, to the casual observer, it might have looked like they might have finally turned things around after 20 years, but we natives know that it was just enough effort to get another 20 years of people saying, "This is it! This is our year!"

C'mon, man. Mocking Pirate fans is kinda like making fun of kids in the hospital.

Not really a recipe, per say... just what I've developed through the years: in your pot, throw some cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger root, etc in a little bit of walnut oil... let those start steaming then pull off heat. I use a whole bag of smallish red apples, peel and core and half, put in pot with spices, fill with cold water so their just covered, and then get to a boil. Then reduce heat and let simmer for about an hour, uncovered. After that I mash what's left of the apples, add a generous amount of 1/2 white sugar & 1/2 brown sugar, add more water to make consistency feel 'right'... let simmer for another hour stirring and mashing a lot. Once done I strain the dregs of spices and pulp (squeeze that pulp, good stuff, there) and put in new container. Add generous amounts of Kraken's Black Rum, pour in an old-school beer mug (preferably one with a metal lid), and add about a teaspoon of real™ butter and a stick of cinnamon.

Put on some Immortal, light up an Onyx and you're ready to go!

Yeah last winter sucked. I want a snowday from work those are always fun. Plus it will help kill off some of the insect larva this summer has been buggy

They said this in my area last year too, and the only "snow day" the kiddies got was for heat, back in the first week of school. There was no significant snowfall whatsoever.

Granted, that's a sample size of one, which isn't really enough to discredit forecasters or anything, but I do hope it's at least understandable why I'd take warnings this year with a grain of salt.

FSM references aside, I just wanna know how an oil tanker escapes a naval vessel.

I mean, sure, Togo's only got a few small patrol boats, but they can easily do more than the 15 knots of an oil tanker, and surely Togo's bigger neighbors' navies would love to get in on some anti-pirate action during a summit on the matter. What gives, Togo?
