Meanwhile, NBC can't figure out how to show the Olympics live.

They totally can show them live anytime, they just don't feel like it at the moment.

Voice?

Sigh. I was hoping they had actually included a speaker/mic on the rover and were recording the message as broadcast ON Mars

I was sort of surprised that Charlies Bolden didn't talk at length about how this mission was made possible solely by Muslims in the middle east. That is his "foremost" task, after all.

Has anyone asked if there is a mic on the rover yet?!

lohphat: Voice?

There was a bit of background noise, but it was quite clear when "Number 5 is ALIVE!" came over the airwaves.

You know...if you do the yodelling over the speaker now too...
we can get the war over with before it even starts...get them before they get us...

lohphat: Voice?

Looks like they bounced a voice transmission off it for some reason or another.

Attaching a microphone and recording what that bit of Mars sounds like would be kinda neat.

Not a lot of clutter or network points of failure between here and Mars.

If I understand correctly, the voice and a song was preprogrammed onto the rover before it was launched then beamed back once landed.

I was hoping that they would play the audio on Mars and record what it sounds like in the martian atmosphere.

I thought it would be cool too... even if was just the sounds of the rover running over stuff.

Buuuut... how thin is the atmosphere/how well would sound even propagate in the Martian atmosphere?

What would a screaming Martian even sound like?!

Link, including sound clips (no screaming Martians, unfortunately).

Evidently AT&T* was not involved in this project.
