The optics of footage of people sitting on their roofs holding "PLEASE HELP US" signs followed immediately by Republicans smiling and applauding under an avalanche of confetti and balloons while the Romneys beam and wave from the podium could be a problem.

"We're going roof to roof delivering Jell-o salad!"

Planning a convention in Florida during hurricane season shows the kind of smarts it takes to run a country.

This is not a convention, it's an infomercial, it's infotainment, it's a show. Production value and reviews are important.

There's a link on that page to a whole raft of quotes about "optics" from newspeople and reporters.

The way they're using it, I have to assume they mean "visuals" since they're using it to refer to split-screen reporting and bad images. So I guess "optics" is the new pseudo-jargon word from the newsies who probably think it sounds much more computer-y and techy.

Yeah it's weird, like at some point they just decided words mean whatever they want them to mean.

Hey, that's not true. We care about lesser hurricanes; they make for great "my street flooded this much" stories when you get to work. Also gives us something else to complain about while we procrastinate. Would've weeded over the weekend, but this damn storm...

No I think it's far better than those. He means the way the RNC looks. He's worried news stations will show images of the RNC and it will be gloomy looking, not pretty with sunshine and rainbows. That's the best part. It's "this hurricane is going to make for less pretty pictures for our Republican National Convention so we're really day-to-day on how pretty this will look. Oh and I guess we should worry about people dying and losing their houses too."

"From an optics and a theater perspective, this is going to have to be on a day-to-day basis," Republican Party of Florida Chair Lenny Curry said on CNN's "Starting Point." "We have to be mindful, obviously, of people's homes and people's lives."

Don't worry, disaster victims. Mitt Romney will be sending tax cuts to your wealthy shortly, and they will give you the encouragement you need to bootstrap your way out of the disaster area.

I think he means how images of the GOP having a massive multi-day party will look of they do it while people down the road are being flooded out of their homes. There's nothing they could do to stop those people losing their homes, and whether they party or not wont bring those homes back but it would look farking terrible for them to be seen to be having so much fun during a storm that could cause others so much misery.

I live 35 miles east of Tampa. We've had no wind - at all - and moderate rain. As I write this, skies are cloudy and the streets are mostly dry. Normal for this time of year is daily thunderstorms with lots of lightning and occasional flooding and wind damage. The tropical storm has scrambled the conditions that produce these storms so you could say Isaac has improved the weather a bit.

And you know full well if this was for the Democrat National Convention there would be conservatives floating the idea God was making a statement with the hurricanes.

Depends.  Every part of the Gulf is different.  Here in downtown New Orleans we're not *that* concerned, although power outtages suck because our power company sucks.  But there are people outside the levee protection area (swampland, essentially) where even a tropical storm will cause major issues.  However most of these people have been living there for generations and know what to do.

Even in the local press conferences, all our governor had to say is... the people in the low lying areas, y'all know who you are and y'all know what to do.

"Optics" has become the new "synergy". It's proto-business speak, so it hasn't made it into normal people's lexicon. It means, literally, how the situation looks.

Punching that baby had a negative impact on the Romney campaign's Optics.

If Obama's going to win, he is going to have to keep his campaign's optics in mind.

It's the epitome of tautology when you see the press... talking about how something "might look" to the press. It's kind of ingenious that they get away with it.
