It's as if there's this weird disconnect that "maybe we can legislate these people under the rug."

Also, a big fark you to the closet case in the article who passes notes instead of leads.

Far be it from me to deny my fellow homosexuals in Rhode Island rights they may desire, but if that were offered in NC, I'd pretty much say, "fark your civil unions."

It's an institution of second class citizenship. And it's usually offered to us as if they're doing us a favor. fark you. fark you and your civil unions. fark you right in the ear.

Rhode Island Republican = mainstream Democrat in 40+ other states. Just sayin'.

"This speaks to the heart of what Republicans believe in -- less government interference in our lives,"

It's cute how she believes that there's still a major party that has that belief, much less acts on it.

Glad some members of the republican party have caught up with the 90s.

However, their supposed "separation" of church and state falls flat as they continue to deny my church the right to perform gay marriages.

Also, what Cythraul said @2.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Apparently, Gov. LePage is against same-sex marriage, but OK with civil unions. For *everybody*. Straight, gay, whatever. Who knew.

/read that in Wikipedia, I think...

The NY Times editorial the article links to is better.

The Republican Party has moved so far to the right that the extreme is now the mainstream. The mean-spirited and intolerant platform represents the face of Republican politics in 2012. And unless he makes changes, it is the current face of the shape-shifting Mitt Romney.

The draft document is more aggressive in its opposition to women's reproductive rights and to gay rights than any in memory. It accuses President Obama and the federal judiciary of "an assault on the foundations of our society," and calls for constitutional amendments banning both same-sex marriage and abortion...

In passages on abortion, the draft platform puts the party on the most extreme fringes of American opinion. It calls for a "human life amendment" and for legislation "to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children." That would erase any right women have to make decisions about their health and their bodies. There are no exceptions for victims of rape or incest, and such laws could threaten even birth control...

The platform praises states with "informed consent" laws that require women to undergo medically unnecessary tests before having abortions, and "mandatory waiting periods." Those are among the most patronizing forms of anti-abortion legislation. They presume that a woman is not capable of making a considered decision about abortion before she goes to a doctor. The draft platform also espouses the most extreme Republican views on taxation, national security, military spending and other issues.

Because the marriage ban amendment was so successful last time, they're doubling down with an abortion amendment as well. Idiots. The GOP needs to be soundly defeated this year so they can rebuild into something resembling sanity again.

The chances were better with Rick Santorum. If Romney doesn't give full-throated support of Tea Party/fundy values, a loss in November may make the GOP think they still weren't right-wing enough and the country will limp along for another election or two.

2012-08-27 10:01:16 AM
"People may now realize you can be gay and still be welcome in the GOP party."
"The platform doesn't carry rights and responsibilities that the candidate is bound by," he said. "Routinely after the platform is out, candidates quickly make statements that they don't agree with it."

She thinks gays are welcome in the GOP, and the Log Cabin guy thinks that after Romney wins, he'll come out in support of gay marriage.
It's so sad. Even the republicans who aren't batshiat insane are still mostly crazy.

Republicans only give a shiat about straight, white, rich, Christian men and boys at military age. Everyone else can go fark themselves as far as they're concerned, but knowing how ridiculously puritanical they are, they'll try to outlaw that too. Their entire platform screams, "VOTE FOR WHITEY, WE'RE OPPRESSED!!" Gays have no rights, women have no rights, minorities have no rights, the poor have no rights, non-Christians have no rights.....they want to rebuild the country in their image. Smarmy, Brylcreemed, power suit-wearing douchebags, as if Gordon Gekko had a love child with Patrick Bateman.

Makes me want to vomit.

stpauler: It's as if there's this weird disconnect that "maybe we can legislate these people under the rug."

What we liberals need to understand about conservatives is that they are driven greatly by the need to adhere to rules and order in their lives. And because THEY think like that, they think EVERYONE does or should think like that. So they think that if they legislate something as being so, then everyone will follow that legislation without question. Combine that with a sense of superiority that some of them have, that they think they know what is right for everyone (borne out of the strong religious right influence probably), and you get the Authoritarians telling their subjects what to think, how to act, how to feel, what to do with their property and so on. The subjects happily follow along without question, and react negatively when they see people not doing the same.

Or as I like to say quite often: conservatives want to grant you the right to be exactly like them.

The 31-year-old delegate from Rhode Island formally suggested that her party's ideological manifesto recognize civil unions for same-sex couples as well as straight ones...

"One person did come up and tell me I should renounce my Catholicism -- that what I was spewing was pure evil," Fenton said. "It was hard to keep a straight face."

Have you considered that maybe it's time to change your political party?

Can your toaster sign contracts and consent to the union? Oh wait, it can't, BECAUSE IT'S A FARKING TOASTER. Just like you're not going to be able to marry a 6 year old, or a tree, or a dog, or a garbage can.

Can we put straight marriage to a referendum? You know, because if it's such a great idea, it'll pass with 105% of the vote, and they can continue being smug assholes who wouldn't even understand the concept of "majority privilege" if it seated an all-black jury against them.

And I see the eyewash is once again being liberally-applied in our wonderful democratic process. On the one hand we have these stupid, non-starter provocations from the extreme right - policy proposals that will never become reality - thrown out as red meat to distract the voters from the actual problems facing the country which elected politicians could actually do something about. And we have of course the predictable reaction from the Democrats in which they pretend that these extremist proposals could actually ever become reality if the other wing of the two-headed political monopoly gets elected, and based on that ridiculous premise cry out for people to vote against the other wing.

In truth, none of these anachronistic ideas will ever be put into practice in this country, even if the Republicans are in power, because such things are decided by the courts and most of it has been decided or is in the process of being decided already. So some conservative Republicans are lured by the fantasy of a repressive social agenda and some Democrats are energized to strive mightily against that agenda, which will never happen.

BTW, did you notice that the Justice Department quietly dropped its case against Goldman Sachs last week? I bet you didn't. After all, there are more important things to base our votes upon, like whether some mouth-breathing bible-thumpers have included provocative language in the meaningless Republican Party platform, whether Willard Romney owns a Rolls Royce or not, and whether Barack Hussein Obama was born in Outer Mongolia or Northern Paraguay. Keep that laser-like focus on the important sh*t, all you American political junkies. You're really on the ball here.

Truly, the culture wars have been a boon to the two-party system, which now is never held to account for its mismanagment by the shrinking pool of citizens who actually vote and who are motivated to do so not by actual policy or government performance, but rather by crass propaganda, sophomoric Vietnam-era college kid debates, and emotional distractions.

"As a Roman Catholic, there's nobody in this room who believes (more than I do) that the definition of marriage is between one man and one woman, but those are my religious beliefs," Fenton said as she made the motion Monday. "This country was founded on the separation of church and state."

She added, "For my own generation, a lot of times homosexuality is not the biggest deal in the world. And that's OK."

You dipshiat. You realize this makes you a Democrat, right? You're a Roman Catholic, which supposedly means you follow the teachings of Jesus which are all Democrat teachings, but you diverge with the Catholic teachings on homosexuality. You're completely a Democrat.

Why is it people view political parties like sports teams that you have to stick with them through thick and thin. Fark that shiat.

Not that I know of. As far as I'm aware, they allow certain provinces and cities to allow gay marriage, or to have something like it (like a civil union).
