Coke's buyout of Mexico would probably be one of the BETTER things that ever happened to that country.

I was confused by the opponents of the tax, the PRI and PRD, both leftists. Then I read the next part, about soda being poor people food and it all made sense. They would rather let the poor people kill themselves with sugar crack than eliminate the VAT on actual food.

The PRI is rightwing, for starters. They dominated Mexico for 70+ years by using dirty tactics such as fixing the elections, slaughtering journalists who opposed them and controlling the media.

This is a reform by the president, Vicente Fox and his aides. His idea is that the extra revenue would go to the poor people, thus benefitting them.

He is an idiot.

If his reform goes through, we would have to pay 18% tax on everything, including books, food and medicine. Which is ridiculous.

One of the reasons we're still a farked third world country (second world?) is that people don't pay taxes to the government, because they are just too high (At the end of the year, depending on your business, the government may have taken away up to 45% of your earnings). Thus, no improvements to social programs or education.

I am one of those who advocates lower taxes for everything. Or a scale for paying taxes depending on their economic position(The rich pay more, the poor pay less). I think if taxes were actually something you could pay and not go bankrupt, more people would do it.

Then you'd have to work to get rid of the corruption in the government that grabs all the tax money for itself.

We drag ourselves down.

We are not lazy. Our poor people would work past the point all of us would have given up, if they knew they had a chance to "make it".

"20% tax on soda, on top of the 15% value added tax which already applies to such beverages."

Doesn't it sound like an exaggeration? Or is it this way in every country?

Even if it is, corruption here would prevent that money from helping the government and the people anyway.

Also, "But in Mexico they eat Coca-Cola.". What the fark ?
I don't drink Coke, but I do know that many people drink it like it was Evian. It's disgusting to me really. But what a stupid quote.

Also, one of the better things that ever happened to this country would be that 9/10 would just freaking shut the fark up.

Let's see here . . article tagline jokes about Coke buying Mexico and there's no flames. I joke about Coke buying Mexico and I get trashed. Double standard?? I know as well as anyone that Coke wouldn't buy Mexico even if they could. Lighten up, people.

Wasn't President Fox once the head of Coca-Cola Mexico? Maybe they "let him go" and now this is his revenge. :)

9/10:

You are absolutely right, of course Coke wouldnt buy Mexico, they would just buy some of those ALF pogs and trade them in for Mexico at the flea market.

One on the better things that could happen to mexico is if more jobs were created for the working class, and if they showed more nudity on Univision. Full frontal please, and no fat chicks.

I would buy Mexico, but I think I'll just spend the money on a twelve pack.

Mex.....45%....that's pretty much what we pay up here in Ontario, Canada in income tax alone.....that's not including GST (7% sales tax) and PST (8% sales tax) on pretty much everything except food....

our Tax day is usually not until mid July...

then again, we do have socialized health care....so I'm not really complaining

<conspiracy theory>
Actually, in other countries the drink the urine of bourgoies, infidel Americans. Evil Corporations force it upon them through marketing campaigns and chances to win prizes.

Peasants do not realize that they are drinking urine because they are naive and don't think that anyone would do something like that. Plus, the US has such and evil grip on them, they do it for a chance at the American Dream.

wtf...? Raise the price so that people can afford less and will consume less... which, in the end, will decrease the tax revenue. why am I thinking nobel prize in economics for these people?

you can't tax your way to prosperity.

WorldCitizen: Yes actually he was some sort of high-ranking president-type person for Coca-cola before he became the president of Mexico. I think I heard that when they were comparing him to Jean Chretien after Bush said Mexico was America's closest ally.

Ontario sucks.

Mexicans eat Coke. heh.
I'm suprised there were no drug references.
