SevenizGud: One of the best movies of all time.

D'Onofrio is completely mesmerizing in his performance. Ermey is also outstanding.

In a typical good movie, you get one B+ performance, and a bunch of B and B-. In this one, there are two A+ and a shiat-ton of A and A-. The only crappy performance was the Vietnamese guy who was pimpin' the ho. Modine "A". Rafterman was awesome (except for one sentence where he introduces Joker), Animal Mother was awesome.

It's not just the performances. Kubrick gives the same treatment of the barracks as he did the Overlook Hotel. It's filmed like all the air had been sucked out of the room. Creepy in it's own right. Tight, minimal dialogue despite Hartman's screaming. And the combat portion is just a whole different film with its own merits.
