I understand that any tropical system in the vicinity of New Orleans is something for them to keep an eye on, but is this supposed to be any stronger than a Cat 1 at landfall? I'm getting the feeling that the news media is hyping this storm up to proportions that far exceed its actual strength. Then again, if there's anything stations like the Weather Channel love, it's the chance to pimp some disaster porn on the nation.

It's currently projected to be a "strong cat 2" hurricane by the time it reaches the gulf coast. Currently...projected.

I don't know if this story is true or just apocryphal, but quite a few years ago, Jim Cantore and his family were going on vacation and one of the passengers happened to notice him and started freaking out, concerned that if they were both headed to the same place, that meant some ginormous hurricane was close behind. The story goes that he had to reassure her that he was on vacation, not assignment, and that nothing was coming.

I can't imagine it feels good to know that when people see you somewhere, they automatically assume some devastating weather event is about to happen. Hopefully he has a sense of humor about it, otherwise it would probably drive him insane.

Do you know what FEMA does? If you knew, you would know why you are wrong. FEMA is not a first responder. FEMA moves in after the damage is done to help assess damage and assist in processing payments to contractors that are involved in clean up, restoration, and rebuilding.

Yet FEMA is already there. So, if not first on scene, then who was?

I just find it hilarious how 1) it is a proven fact the Democrats have a hurricane machine, and 2) there have been more hurricanes in the last four years than there were at any point under Bush. It is called the "false flag" policy. You use the hurricane machine to destroy a major American city and people will vote for you. But the only storm surge they will get is the storm surge of higher taxes and government regulation. Do you get what I am trying to say?

So who does the actual management of emergencies if not the Federal Emergency Management Agency? Sure FEMA isn't a first responder, but someone has to be responsible for coordinating the response. If not FEMA, who?

Actually, FEMA does manage emergencies. They only do so, on the other hand, after receiving a formal request from the State to do so. Their main mission is to empower State and Local response and emergency management agencies to handle as much in-house as possible, and to - at the very least - be able to perform continuity of emergency operations for at least 36 to 72 hours until Federal and State Mutual Aid Assets can be established in the area.

There is a whole, bureaucratically complicated system called the National Incident Management System in placed, based on the Incident Command System, which manages how FEMA interacts with local and state responders, and how and when they can step in.

It's an open and free course, and if you really want to learn more about how and why FEMA does what it does the way it does, it's an eyeopener.
