"If they are converting the sun's solar energy to fuel chemical work, without the aid of microbial symbionts - organisms that live together with a host, often to their mutual benefit - we would consider this a highly remarkable feat in the animal world," Gries added.

Perhaps the enzymes and/or biochemical mechanisms that produce the monoterpenes simply do not function (or do not function efficiently) until the animal's body temperature reaches a certain threshold, so the animals take advantage of solar heating to expedite the process.

While not outside the realm of possibility, it seems highly unlikely that a species of bug has figured out a way to fix solar energy into a biochemical reaction along the lines of what those "microbial" or even algal symbionts would do for their hosts.
