I wonder if he has some contingency plan set up for the care of his dog. I hate the thought of the dog starving to death if his owner passed away suddenly.

Sounds like there's plenty of edible wildlife around, if the dog's any good at hunting.

I remember seeing a TV program on this guy. Restoration Island used to be a desolate rock, until this guy planted trees and other vegetation on it. Now it's a paradise, and IIRC the program said the Australian government had taken possession of it and let him live on it for as long as he lived. I guess that was contingent on him building a small resort on the island for environmentally conscious tourists, though.

Living off crabs and coconuts, and connected to solar-powered internet, David Glasheen has enjoyed a life of private tranquillity his dog Quasi

Oh, a real modern day Robinson Crusoe. I wonder how anyone ever caught up with him.

2012-08-25 08:29:18 PM
he wasn't there illegally, he paid $13k per year to live there, but the douchewitz never bothered to build facilities he promised to build 20 years ago as part of his contract living there...so they want him gone

kick him off and into a dirty street somewhere

In most places in America as a squatter he would be granted the land based on the improvements he had already made to the land

2012-08-25 08:29:36 PM
He talks about the value of honesty, but apparently it doesn't apply to him in the course of business dealings.

2012-08-25 08:30:20 PM
So let me get this straight.. Rich Stock guy and his rich Stock friends agree to build a resort for the public in exchange for reduced lease... They lose money in gambling stocks.. and decide the island is just at his disposal? doesn't sound like an entitled rich coont playing the victim at all...

2012-08-25 08:32:19 PM
He's not a castaway.

He's a squatter who violated the terms of his lease.

Simple solution: build a series of bamboo huts a la Gilligan's Island. It wouldn't take long, and loonies like me would rent them in a shot. Hell, you could make it a theme park of sorts, and challenge the renters to build coconut radios and bamboo limousines.

Why did they list the island's area in hectares, though? 3.7 acres is easier to picture for most people.

Sure, if his bamboo huts can be valued at at least $131,000.

Actually, he is very sane and very smart. And very crooked. He abrogated a contract with the Australian government then chose to live there for 20 years with no intention of trying to make right on breaking his contract.

Brilliant. But he belongs in prison for what he did.

We need to see the contract details first.

It was for 43 years. It's been 20 years. That leaves 23 more years for him to build whatever it was he needs to build. Until I see specified time targets in the contract, the complainers should STFU.
