WVIR reported that the university offered the campaign the university's John Paul Jones Arena
and the campaign knows it can't bus in enough people to fill that place!

To host the president would require cancellation of 186 classes, which "would result in an extraordinary disruption of the second day of the new semester,"

Meh. Seems like a legitimate reason to deny the request. Am I supposed to be outraged?

Nah. I'm sure the President can come visit on a day that's more convenient for the university. His schedule is really open.

Wow - a university president making the right decision. I'm impressed.

Please Google the number of previous candidates that have given campaign speeches there. Note the date and time.

Wiki says arena opened in 2006, and under "memorable events" lists zero presidents speeches. It does mention Michael Buffer opened a Virginia Cavaliers game once though.

LETTS GETTTT REEEADDDDDY TOOOO RUMMMMBBBBLLLEEEE

I could see how this would be a big outrage if Obama had to miss out.

Honestly, does Obama really have anything new to say that UVA students need to hear? He wants your vote, it's not his fault, the Republicans are mean. It's sad and tired.

/Everyone has already made up their mind anyway

Except for those swing voters, but who cares about them, amiright?

Maybe they can be in Romney's next "We DID Build That" commercial.

University: yeah, having the president here on the second day of classes would really mess up our semester.

Republicans: OH MY GOD, THIS MEANS FARTBONGO IS FINISHED OMGWTFBBQ

University: No, it would just extend the semester and--

Republicans: YOU LIE-BRALS ARE LOSING AND DON'T EVEN KNOW IT LEGITIMATE RAPE FTW!!

Republicans: We don't rape women. We also rape meaning.
And children.

There aren't as many of them this year.

The number of undecided swing voters is at a minimum this time around. This is all about get out the vote drives, and using or combating voter suppression(depending on if there is an R or a D next to the name).

So do you want Mitt Romney to quit giving speeches as well or just Obama?

Does subby seriously think that the if Pbama is not allowed to make an appearance, the students of UV will vote for Mitt Romney?

This is clearly because they hate him and think he's a bad president... And has nothing to do with the fact that disrupting the second day of classes at a major university would be a mess.

That is really surprising for a school that elected Michael Vick as quarterback. You would think they would be hip to a black president.

I actually think he was being sarcastic. It's odd, I know, but randomjsa every so often has these non-derpy moments. They're fleeting, so you have to watch for them carefully.

Most people would place "watching the President speak live" as somewhat more important in the scale of things than a single day of classes.

The professors wouldn't agree. The students might not agree if it's the difference between dropping out of a class and getting your money back or having to pay for it.

If Obama wants to speak there, do it on a weekend.

what i find repugnant is that the whole university will be disrupted for a day for a half hour speech. in my heart of hearts i understand the over abundance of caution but damn it sucks that we have come to this.

when Bush was here in april of 2008 to meet with mexico's president not only did they shut down the ENTIRE interstate, both sides, from the airport to the CBD but there were cops stationed on each overpass giving folks the stink eye as they went about their lawful business.

the cops i sort of understood. both sides of the interstate, not at all.

Actually I think this may be more of the reason.

Wood wrote that the university would also have to bear the full cost of the event, including event staffing, and, by requirements for both federal and state tax-exempt status, the university would have to provide the same opportunity for other candidates.

So if Romney then wanted to speak there they would have to let him. If the third party candidate wanted to speak there they would have to let them. Things can potentially get pricey and disruptive there.

As opposed to the fresh new ideas the GOP is serving up, like "Lower taxes for the rich" and "Welfare Queens are driving BMW's on your dime"?

How much control over state university officer hiring and firing does the (Republican) governor of Virginia have?

This. It's not like they said "We're not gonna let FartBamMa0 to speak becuz he's an evul Kenyan Usurper!" They rightly cited the logistical problems it would cause, which would be exacerbated by the equal time requirements they labor under. Makes sense to me.

The company that was vetted for a loan under the Bush Administration? So if UVA gave him the timeslot he wanted should we expect a kickback in 2017 under the next president?

This man speaks the truth. My favorite class of all time was a calculus course where our incredibly eccentric professor noticed that only a handful of his usual >100 students actually showed up the day after a midterm was graded and returned (since the lecture was going to be about the answers). He stopped after going over the first question and said "You know what? F*ck it. I'm going to give you guys the first question on the NEXT exam, as long as you promise not to tell anybody who didn't show up today!" Next midterm, and there it is. Question #1.

I wouldn't.

It isn't what the students paid for.

And I read nothing about a guarantee that every student with a cancelled class would get to see him speak.

Don't know enough about past speakers to know if this is political but on its face I support the decision.

The John Paul Jones Arena would be an awesome venue for a Led Zeppelin reunion concert. That's about all I got from that article.
