And how!

So ... McCain and Kyl should be called out as well, for speaking with the Navajo extensively regarding water, right?

"Well, there's an entirely different angle to this," added Chris Stearns, a Navajo lawyer and chairman of the Seattle Human Rights Commission. "I think you could argue that when Gov. Martinez met with Pat Rogers, she disrespected the memory of intelligent people everywhere."

A high level New Mexican GOP official used "French surrounded monkeys" in a professional email to a colleague?

What the hell is JAJ?

And who the hell has ever respected Custer?

My mother grew up in Wyoming. She never missed a chance to point out what a colossally stupid thing Custer did at Little Bighorn.

Yes he was a dickwad but before you decide the answer to that question is completely black and white, maybe you should read up on the third day at Gettysburg at what is now called the East Cavalry Field. A key part of Lee's plan for Pickett's charge on the Union center was to have J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry loop around the Union line and attack from the rear, which would have caused chaos and might have been enough to make Pickett's attack successful.

However, Stuart's 3 brigades ran into two union cavalry brigades, one the 7th Michigan led by a very young Brigadier General named George Armstrong Custer:

"Gregg ordered Custer to counterattack with the 7th Michigan. Custer personally led the regiment, shouting "Come on, you Wolverines!" Waves of horsemen collided in furious fighting along the fence line on Rummel's farm. Seven hundred men fought at point-blank range across the fence with carbines, pistols, and sabers. Custer's horse was shot out from under him, and he commandeered a bugler's horse. Eventually enough of Custer's men were amassed to break down the fence, and they caused the Virginians to retreat."

It says in the statement it is a NM law the sitting governor must attend the annual summit. News to me but even without this, this guy is a farkwit.

New Mexico, as much as possible with humans, seems to have a decent record of attempting doing good in regards to it's poly-racial makeup. Santa Fe is the oldest continually occupied capital city in North America and it's been through Natives, Spain, Mexico and the US, with even pinche Texas trying to get a slice. In a sense we've experienced the growing pains and have a pretty good polyglot thing going that is uniquely New Mexican. If this regressive asshat doesn't like it he can get the fark out.

So if we extend that bit of logic, American politicians should never meet with Germans, Japanese, Italians, British, French, Russian, Korean, Chinese, Iranian, Iraqi or Vietnamese politicians, all of whom killed or at least took a shot at American generals at some point in history

No doubt I missed a few.

Why is it a slap in the face? Because Custer made a poor choice? Is this the party of personal responsibility once again?

What does that word mean? All the Googles give me is redistributable, which I don't THINK is what he's saying, but maybe? I'm really, really hoping it isn't a slur meaning "pro-indian" or something like that. But considering the rest of the email...

Col. George Armstrong Custer was an arrogant, unmitigated dick of a military officer, who's overconfidence lead him into the situation of getting his entire company slaughtered by a technologically inferior, and compartively undertrained force.

Why should we be celebrating a person who's racism and superiority complex lead to one of the most famous American military disasters in history, and who's mistakes are required study material for the American military leadership at their academies, again?

I was at Little Big Horn about a month ago. Custer and Reno are revered as heroes. Small memorials to the Arapaho and Cheyenne and Sioux are afterthoughts.

Had to bite my tongue. The words "genocide" and "trail of tears" and "wounded knee" were just going to start an argument i didn't feel like having.

I had always heard them referred to as the Mujahadeen. Grew up near a SAC base during the time we were up to whatever it was we were doing over there, the city was flooded with Freedom Fighter hash for years.

A lot of the "Custer legacy" is actually traceable to his widow, Libby, who nowadays would be an attention whore of the finest caliber.

Immediately after the Little Big Horn, it was apparent to practically everyone that Custer screwed up in every way possible (discounting the racism, which was about par for the course back then): He got his men killed horribly, for no good reason, in a way that accomplished nothing except prolonging the Indian Wars for another 20 years.

Libby Custer, however, would have none of it. Her husband was a HERO, who died a HERO'S DEATH, and for whatever reason--misplaced gallantry, perhaps--nobody wanted to gainsay her or challenge her in her constant cheerleading of his memory. So she continued to push his HERO'S MEMORY for the rest of her life, and after her death, Custer was a bona fide hero except to those who still remembered the massacre.

Waves of horsemen collided in furious fighting along the fence line on Rummel's farm. Seven hundred men fought at point-blank range across the fence with carbines, pistols, and sabers. Custer had more balls than brains. He graduated last in his class and was known as an aggressive commander who got many under him needlessly killed due to lousy tactics. Post Civil War his career was in shambles and he was demoted to Colonel.

Well, Stuart succeeding wouldn't really have had any impact on the PPT assault. It may have diverted reserves from the center, but Meade didn't really need the reserves, the men who were there (and the artillery) pretty much took care of things themselves. The objective of Stuart's attack was to disrupt any attempt at an orderly withdrawal by Meade if the PPT assault succeeded.

But yes, Custer was a legit war hero who earned the right to be respected for defending our country.

On the other hand, he was also a war criminal. So he forfeited the right to be respected.
