I think there were a lot of guys who were inside C-3PO, if you take my meaning.

But why are midgets always so pissed off? Go yell at God, not the normals.

If they weren't so angry, we couldn't get away with calling them Douche Baggins.

I saw Baker at a comic convention once but was hesitant to approach him. No one paid terribly much attention to him. Although I have to say that the actor who played Chewbacca was there and he was farkin' A. I didn't have the money to purchase anything/have it signed and yet he was still very welcoming to a photo and a handshake.

He really degraded me and made me feel small - for want of a better expression...

I never liked 3PO anyway. Farkin cocksucker. By the way, you probably are still very short.

Why did they even need to cram a midget into the R2 unit? They had computer controlled cameras back then. They couldn't have made a remote controlled droid? I think Lucas has a serious midget fetish.

Shouldn't all these midget actors be directing their midget rage at Peter Jackson? He's driving midget actors into extinction.

This is common knowledge among star wars fans. Anthony Daniels is a bit of a twit, granted he was the one who was stuck into a metal bodysuit and was sometimes forgotten when the crew took a break

Might as well talk about Warrick Davis who also founded Willow Management, founded in 1995) that specialises in representing actors under five feet tall and now also people above 7 feet tall. Too bad CGI has come around to make the need for large or small people that act rather moot

remember the budget for the first star wars movie. A little person in a suit is cheaper than a 70s era robot and a 70s era robot operator.

Whenever you saw R2 standing (mostly still) on 2 legs, Kenny Baker was in there. Whenever you saw R2 running around with the middle leg down, it was a remote controlled robot.

Yeah, I 've heard this too. He was the voice of Legolas in the Bakshi LOTR movie and maybe some rabbit in Watership Down(?) I heard an interview with him once and he was pretty straight about it, basically "nobody liked me and I didn't like them." So he's a dick and doesn't like people, I can respect that.

Well I doubt that he had a little treadmill running the thing so at least parts of it had to be remote controlled.

A friend of mine was once so overcome by fan stupid he left all his stuff at Kenny Baker's table. I had to go in there, explain that I was a professional (not a lie, just an exaggeration, I was there with a press pass) not a fan (which was a complete lie) and was just there to get my colleague's things. Which meant jumping a line of about a hundred people. I could feel every single one of them eyeing me with hate. So I just collected my friend's things and ran away.

The last part of that had nothing nothing to do with Kenny Baker and more to do with his unspeakably hot wife. The entire time, everyone looked at me like I was some kind of ape. I opted not to explain that I had about ten minutes to go to my room, shower, change, and get to an exclusive party across the street.

Tell us more about nothing nothings with his unspeakably hot wife.

I forgot my point. When I got to the front his wife knew exactly what I was talking about. She just reached under the table, grabbed what I was after and handed them to me. Kenny just kinda glared at me. Which was perfectly fair, I mean he'd settled into fan adoration and brought only chaos.

Any other day I would have been in line just for Time Bandits but I was on a deadline. That party I went to involved me getting the guy from a major Smallville fansite off a hot model in a tight dress.

Kenny Baker was basically a puppeteer. He would turn the head, make the "hologram projector" swivel around, push the various tools and gadgets out the doors and operate them, and shake and nod in reaction to things. It would have been extremely expensive to make a robot do all that. Recall the difficulty Spielberg had with his mechanical shark.

The one thing Baker couldn't do was make R2 walk fast. The remote control R2 (with three legs) could be driven around and the head could turn but it couldn't do much else. It couldn't even do those things reliably with uneven terrain and harsh conditions on location. All of R2's personality and interactions came from Ben Burtt's vocalizations/sound effects and Baker's movements.

Kenny Baker had less to do in the prequels because with advances in electronics the remote control robots could do more and whatever they couldn't do could be done with CG animation. However he does still make his "appearances" in scenes such as the final shots of Episodes I and II.
