The most shocking thing of that story is the two politicians seem normal in regards to their responses.

If my Dad had run for an office when I was 18 I could see myself being in those pictures, trashing yard signs and bonging down. I'm glad he never ran for office and not everybody had a camera when I was young.

Hoping that someone tries to equate this to the voter suppression efforts of the Right.

Caldwell says he has apologized to Ben Cayetano, who characterized the incident as a childish mistake.

"We've all done foolish things when we were young, and I'm sure she regrets what she did," Cayetano said.

Yeah, THIS is the real story. Rather than derp down, one politician simply apologized. Rather than herp-a-derp back, the other politician accepted the apology with a "we all make mistakes." Holy fark.

Right? A completely reasonable response by both canidates.

Dad promises to discipline his daughter and opponent takes it in stride without blowing the situation out of proportion. I didn't think it was possible for opposing sides of an election to treat each other like human beings.

/must be because they are in Hawaii and not "real" America

Cayetano is a pretty cool guy. He understands that Kirk wouldn't ever sanction something like this, so he isn't going to hold it against him. Cayetano's own kids have had problems in the past, so I'm sure he understands the predicament that Kirk is in.

Man, back in the day doing something like that would cause a parent to use the words "father daughter talk" and mean code for "I will whoop her ass so hard that she will need to ask for a pillow to sit on in coach".

When asked for his response to the incident, Kirk Caldwell expressed his disappointment in Maya and said that he planned on having a serious "father-daughter" talk with her Thursday night.

Maya is scheduled to leave for college in Massachusetts on Friday.

Caldwell says he has apologized to Ben Cayetano, who characterized the incident as a childish mistake.

"We've all done foolish things when we were young, and I'm sure she regrets what she did," Cayetano said.

Wow, it's almost as if these people are handling this like adults. I'm flabbergasted.

Came here to say this. I was impressed that the guy took responsibility, rather than deny it or pull a 'No comment!'. The fact that the guy whose sign they burned was just as big a man makes me kinda wish I lived in Honolulu. I'd never see this here in Salt Lake. But then again, I can ski at something like 30 resorts here, so there's that...

Hawaiian politics are a bit different than the mainland. Negative campaigning has a good chance of backfiring on the candidate. In the last gubernatorial election primary, the former mayor of Honolulu (Mufi) was ahead in the poles by 20%. For some reason, he started a series of negative campaigning of the type you see on the mainland. Not only did he blow his lead, but he effectively commited political suicide.

In the current mayoral race, a PAC (PRP) has already over a million dollars on attack ads against Cayetano. Not only have they not worked, but they seem to have backfired. When asked about the ads in an interview, Cayetano replied "I hope they spend another million dollars. I could really use the votes!"

You know about Hawaii politics! Yes, Mufi blew a big lead against Abecrombie by negative campaigning. Two things stuck out in my mind about that race. The first was when Mufi was addressing members of a trade union who were mostly "local" (i.e. Polynesian and/or Asian descent). He told them "I look like you, you look like me" which was obviously a cut at Haole (Caucasian) Abecrombie. Haoles didn't like it. Many locals also felt it was a divisive and hurtful thing to say.

Mufi also sent out a "compare and decide" brochure that helped him lose even more voters. In the brochure, he listed their education - Mufi graduated from Harvard while Abecrombie was a University of Hawaii graduate. I don't think anyone honestly thinks that as a whole, the Univ. of Hawaii is anywhere near the academic quality as Harvard, but the comparison still didn't sit well with U.H. students and graduates. Yeah, we all recognize that Harvard is a better school, but we still have a lot of pride in U.H. and we really don't like the Ivy League snobbery thrown in our faces.

Yes, Hawaii doesn't really have the same tolerance for negative campaigning that many other states do. It is kind of nice that way.

If you were to destroy someone else's property, the only way you'd be arrested and prosecuted is if the person who owned the property decided to press charges. Cayetano owned the property and he didn't press charges so the issue was dropped. No need to make this into a conspiracy.
