Mikey1969: Something doesn't flow right, I had to read it 3 times in a row to figure it out myself. It states later that Ryan is a "lifelong Packers fan", so while I at first thought this was a non-story, I now realize that it's just shameless pandering which is annoying, and usually offensive to those being pandered to, once they realize it. Fark this Ryan dude.

Yeah. I completely read that wrong.

Oh, and heading it off at the pass, my voting stub is usually red, though I
*never* pull/push/whatever "party line." I vote for the person who best represents
their constituency, irrespective of whether or not I personally want it.

With that voting philosophy, I've been both bug and windshield, but sleep well
at night.

It's not really the rooting for another team that's a problem.

It's the shameless "insert local sports team here" pandering.

I guess the fact that it's utterly moronic should have tipped me off that it's from the actual political scene. The Onion guys at least make an effort with their social commentary.

Let me just say that I think Paul Ryan is an ahole, but really people ... really? No matter how much you like a sport how could that sway your vote. I can just see it now, I really agree with candidate x on a lot of things, but they don't like the packers so f-him.

Yeah I live here. Steelers fans are extremely retarded about this team. The Monday after a loss you can notice a palpable city wide depression.

This.

I find this specific dimension of Obama refreshing.

If a pol doesn't have the backbone to stand by his/her sports teams the he 1) isn't a sports fan 2) is a weasel. Either way I respect said pol less.

impaler: Despite the pressure from Wisconsinites and members of the media, he refused to don the famous cheesehead, the cap of Green Bay Packers fans.

Talk about a no-win situation for Paul.

Either look like a buffoon to the rest of the nation, or lose votes for his congressional seat in Wisconsin.

Of course he could have also refused to touch the terrible towel.

Or he could have simply played along with the unserious ritual and not worried about it, because that shows he has a more serious perspective.

Oh wait, that's what he did.

unfortunately, yes. i hate this place.

I feel ya. I got out of there, fortunately.

I still remember a couple years back going to a sports bar to watch a UT vs Tech game, the one where Tech actually pulled off a win, and it was the same night as the OU v UNL game. Even though the Nebraska game was over in the first five minutes, the Sooners got 4 TDs, they still wouldn't put the Texas game on any TV insisting every TV play the Nebraska game. So, my table started cheering for the Sooners. I'm surprised we survived the night.

On second thought, that was a fun night, considering.

And that's the real issue. Ryan couldn't say "I'm not really interested in sports traditions" in much the same way he couldn't say "I don't believe in God."

Paul Ryan is the John Cena of politics. Next he will be in Atlanta doing the chop and then he'll be in Boston the next night wearing a Celtics jersey.

As a Maryland republican I was as horrified by this as anyone else. But after reflection I have chosen to look at this as an example of how far he is willing to go to lead our party to victory in the fall. He is even willing to demean himself by spinning a urine soaked rag above his head to win a few more votes in Pittsburg.

I live in a very red section of northern Wisconsin where most of the "letters to the editor" in the local newspaper are filled with more derp than the typical politics thread on Fark. One guy wrote in, and was very serious, about not voting for Obama because he is a Bear fan. We had to vote for Ryan (not Romney) because he is a Packer Fan.

/I guess if you are going to take a stand it is as good a reason as any other
//best way to pick a president is by his favorite sport team

I only get the peripheral fans. I see more Steelers stickers all the way down here than I see for any other team. Without fail, I will see 4-5 stickers of a pit bull with a Steeler's collar peeing on something, just in 3 exits on my way to work in the AM. I have never seen a Packers sticker depicting a mascot peeing on swomething else before.

Funny part is that he was pretty much exactly the same...except we called him "P.D.", not Paul. To be fair, he was a really nice, friendly guy. I don't have anything negative to say about him, but he was also two grades below me, in my sister's class.

He now lives on the block adjacent to my childhood home, where my parents still live. I used to hide out in the backyard of the Parker mansion (his new house) when I was a kid. My parents say that the whole area is cordoned off by Secret Service, and I'll have to subject myself to a auto and body search if I visit.

I've probably said enough to ID myself.....but I don't care.

All he had to do was look at his running mate to understand that if you try to please everybody on everything you end up standing for nothing and being despised by everyone.

Pittsburgh fans would appreciate being loyal to your team more than they'll like you for pandering to theirs.

And in Wisconsin, supporting another team is like cheating on your wife. Supporting a conference rival is like cheating on your wife with a dog.
