I wonder if you'll have to stop ever so often and take a shiat.

Honestly, having stuff like mandatory eating, exercising and having to go out with your friends made it a little TOO realistic for me.

I buy games to get away from that stuff.

I hope this one has more varied terrain. That was my biggest knock on GTA 4. In San Andreas, I could get on a bicycle and pedal it down a crazy mountain, but in the last one my one option was getting stuck in NY traffic.

GTA hasn't been good sinced they moved away from the top-down view, multi-player games.

Saints Row is a way better 3D series.

I never played the first one. JC2's endless instant parachutes and endless grapple hooks and silly physics is just a total blast, I fire it up at least once a month. The story/story missions are total shiat, but they're pretty much unnecessary to the game beyond the intro mission.

The biggest weakness by far is the lack of multiplayer, but there's a mod that's working on that.

Yes, but... you can blow up the traffic. Just cause a huge pileup, wait for traffic to back up, get a car smoking/on fire, and blow shiat up!

I hope they get creative and use the world more.

They build such interesting and detailed worlds, and it's like a painting you just look at. Mission don't revolve around it besides how to get from A to B, most building you can't go in, and it just get so boring and "done before".

GTA4 had the one bank robbery mission which felt new and exciting; breaking the vault, running through alleys, down into the subway, ect. The rest of the game? Races, lear out bad guy missions and A>B item runs. Blah....

They really need to mix up the missions and start using the world they create to make things a bit less repetitive.

You could blow the heck out of traffic in GTA:SA also. Truth be told, I wouldn't might just having an update. A couple months after I played I visited the San Fran and Vegas, was weirded out that the GTA cities are just simplified maps. Lots of times I had ideas for "shortcuts" that I had to tell myself not to take.

Hopefully they've taken out the scripted events in the car chase missions. My biggest gripe about IV was the chase sequences quickly turned into a game of Memory. OK, turn left, dodge the moped, turn down the alley, swing left to avoid the crashing garbage trucks....ARG!

Yup, another fault!

Also hated how the AI would speed up or slow down and only allow you to catch hem or win when you hit a certain point. 'm I'm smart enough to set up an ambush, or take a shortcut, then I should be bale to take the fraker out sooner. Don't change the rules mid mission to drag them out, build better missions.

Loved GTA 4, but it was unplayable on PC. After all the patch updates and days of frustration, the game would very often lag/freeze/crash on me. I had to give up playing on it, far too buggy.

One of the shiattiest PC ports I've ever encountered. Let's hope this time they do the PC version justice. The GTA series deserves a platform where visual and gameplay mods are openly welcomed, unlike the console versions.

I miss the old school GTA's... Where a 5 star wanted rating made the city look like Baghdad, complete with tanks roaming the streets.

They need to go back to the game being absolutely ridiculous. GTA 4 took itself a tad too seriously for it's own good in my opinion. The story still had that goofy Rockstar feel, but the gameplay didn't.

2012-08-24 01:54:45 PM
I think the GTA series lost it to Saints Row's customization and zaniness, although SR3 oversimplified itself with upgradeable default pistols becoming explosive bolter bullets of rapid death. Serious, those pistols when fully upgraded could quickly take down everything but tanks, the TRON assassin chicks and the steroid freaks.

GTA IV started interesting with Niko's background and family issues, then blew it by ending the Russian Mafia story chain short. And don't get me started on phone calls from friends.

I just hope on the PC version you do not need to continually hold down a key to be able to 3rd person shoot. I cannot remember if this held on 4 but VC was a pain to shoot 3rd person but my lord it made the gang wars so easy and fun. Mouse aim and asdw movement.

I have not played a GTA game to date that I didn't absolutely love. They all had some pretty big faults but at the end of the day, the sheer amount of fun you can have by just car jacking someone and never letting off the gas pedal is immeasurable. And to the people that bemoan the lack of "fun things to do" in Liberty City, I draw the assumption that you either have little imagination or no access to the online party mode. My friends and I had countless good times playing human plinko down high-rise project central stairwells, human bowling at the airport by skimming as close to the Tarmac in a helicopter as possible and then bailing out, trying to outdare each other jumping motorcycles over hovering helicopters, stealing a cop car or swat van and playing cops and robbers, or having breakneck, 4 wide exotic car drag races down Liberty City's busiest streets. But you couldn't lift weights or ride a bicycle, so I guess it was too linear and boring.

/can't wait for GTAV!

GTA4's online was a glitchy filled buggy, latency induced mess. It took them over a year to even fix stat tracking.

Seems they got it mostly ironed out in RDR finally, but it still was a biatch temperamental. Hopefully they Ace in the Hole it this time around.

There's tons of fun things to do. Personally, I just don't like the direction the game play is going. Rockstar needs to get the shooting right in the next iteration, and loosen the cars up. GTA3/VC/SA were the 3 pinnacles of the series for me. The gameplay was batshiat crazy, and even though the shooting was arguably worse I had more fun with it because of the fact it was so bonkers. Their attempts to bring "gritty realism" into the gameplay I think detract from the overall experience.

Honestly if they can make GTA V's shooting as tight as they made Max Payne 3's, and make the cars fun to drive again then GTA V will be incredible. If it's too much like 4, then I think 4 will be the last GTA game I'll buy. The stories were always great, I just lost interest in 4 real fast because I didn't dig the gameplay(or that goddamn cell phone).

THIS. Ignore stupid GTA and the clones. Just Cause 2 is the most balls to the wall ludicrous sandbox game ever made. Helicopters, jets, cars, trucks, motorcycles, tanks, guns, explosives, high speed chases, great physics, fairly glitch free, everything goes boom, just pure greatness.

2012-08-24 02:49:09 PM
They can take a page from the developers of Sleeping Dogs. It's the best control setup I've seen in a sandbox-GTA-styled game so far, and the best combat system.

That, and bring back the silliness, the tanks, and get rid of characters like Brucie permanently.

Also: No lowrider games. That was farking stupid.

Gunderson: All you had to do was follow the damn train, CJ!

Ha, WOW. That mission gave me an aneurism until I figured out to use the overpass stairs as a ramp to jump onto the train and take them out before the tunnel. Trying to shoot those bastards while riding alongside the train just never worked for me.

I hope GTA V incorporates more environmental interactivity ala Assassin's Creed and combat ala Arkham Asylum. And as said above, GTA 4's cars were terribly heavy and sloppy, and New York doesn't really have the kind of space and environmental variety that makes a driving game fun.

Also, VERY important: I don't want cops to shoot at me unless I shoot at them first. Beating up cops is enormously fulfilling, and it's maddening that all they do is fire upon you while backpedaling. Come on, pigs, tussle with me!

Also also, Sleeping Dogs

The trick is to not really do missions. Stronghold ones aren't a bad idea, since they give you more respawn points, but progression on the story should really take a backseat to trying to tether your helicopter to a Panauan military helicopter while it's shooting at you, then playing Joust until one of you explodes.

not just you, but I don't know if this happened to anyone else. But since the cars do suck in GTA IV, and NYC felt so cramped, driving fast led to me rear ending a lot of cars.

Well once I hit a guy after going Dukes of Hazard off a hill. The force caused him to rear end the car in front of him...a cop car. Both cops proceeded to yell and pull the guy out, and when the guy got on his knees with his hands up, they shot him, then got in their car and drove off.

It was a crazy "WTF" moment for me because it was random and I hadn't seen that happen before.

I haven't matured much, technically speaking, since GTAIII first came out, but yet I genuinely can't stand the Saints Row series. I've given it a solid try, played maybe 1/3rd of the game (even coop) then immediately went back to GTAIV. Maybe I'm just a Rockstar groupie, maybe the stiff animations of Saints Row remind me too much of the god-awful true crime series, or maybe that light pole that fell on my head years ago had far reaching and unexpected ramifications, but I seriously don't understand why people fawn over Saints Row. I can almost see the appeal, but the zaniness just feels so....forced. It's like the difference between a mad-man sprinting around in grimy clothes, beard full of dried vomit, screaming about how the many-penised alien overlords are coming to scrape out brain pans like so much coconut meat (GTA) and a teenaged kid in an ironic shirt mimicking the mad-man because his friends are "totally going to put this on you tube"(SR). Like I said, I don't get it. I don't hold it against SR fans, but I suppose it can't possibly be a bad thing that Rockstar will be allowed to explore more mature and serious tones and the people that enjoyed the over-the-top zaniness still have a place to call home in a game like Saints Row.

mooseyfate: I don't hold it against SR fans, but I suppose it can't possibly be a bad thing that Rockstar will be allowed to explore more mature and serious tones and the people that enjoyed the over-the-top zaniness still have a place to call home in a game like Saints Row.

I feel the same way, sort of. I liked SR 1 and 2. They kept it at least somewhat grounded with some pretty tense moments and the best action in cutscenes I had seen thus far. I had The Third paid off and preordered. I was excited. Then, as more and more information came along I got less and less excited and eventually canceled my preorder the day before it came out. Everything just looked so damn corny.

I'm also an unrepentant GTA fanboy. GTA4 was just about everything I wanted it to be. I'm sure number 5 will fix even that.

Also this.

To The Escape Zeppelin!: Lets be honest here. We all just want an open world game where you can be a super villain. I want to be able to hire thugs, take and execute hostages, demand money, and blow up buildings at will. And just think of the escort missions. "Make sure the bomb gets to the police station safely."

This was, by far, the biggest problem with GTA4. The lack of end game content. shiat you can do that doesn't depend on heavy scripting and that plays out dynamically.

mooseyfate: I haven't matured much, technically speaking, since GTAIII first came out, but yet I genuinely can't stand the Saints Row series.

I vastly prefer GTA too, but I think it just comes down to whether you value the quality of the city presentation vs. gameplay. The former to me is extremely important--I don't care how many fun side games there are, if the city looks and feels cheap/busted then I won't get attached or immersed. I still have strong memories of specific locations in Liberty City, such as the early morning light shimmering off the water near Pier 45, that easily rival memories of real-life places. I even associate songs I heard on the radio with memories of the city. Same goes for GTA:SA and VC, which look cheap now but were easily the best of their time. While I enjoyed SR2 and 3, I have no such memories of Steelport or Stilwater.

Even the realistic GTA4 car physics that people complain about are a huge plus for me. I can't go back to arcade-like driving, it just feels cheap now.

This so much. I loved that 1st Manhunt game. I thought the campaign was a bit too short, and it needed maybe a bit of a sandbox element, but yeah, that game was so much fun. HEAD JUICE!

If they do another one, I demand Brian Cox be in it. His Director character was so perfectly depraved and sadistic. His voice would literally give me chills sometimes. He sounded REALLY into it.

I also prefer GTA to SR, though I appreciate the latter's attempts to bring zany fun back to the open-world crime game. A lot of the fun of GTA comes from all the little details that emerge from a car crash or an explosion or bodies flying all over, that SR's superficial physics can't replicate. And GTA's gameplay can get repetitive, but it is nowhere near as repetitive as SR.

I forgot. The absolute worst thing about Saints Row 3? They killed off Johnny Gat, the best character in the series, off screen, in a pre-release gameplay trailer..

GreySpectre: Now then the question is will the cars actually be fun to drive or will they be like driving a top heavy spring on wheels around like they were in GTA4

This, this, and more this. Vice City was the pinnacle of the driving experience in my opinion. GTA 3 had ok handling but crappier cars. San Andreas the handling got kinda sloppy and not as much interesting stuff, but some fun driving.. GTA 4 driving was like piloting a wet turd while high on bath salts, and it completely blew the game for me.. I just couldn't stand it, so I quit

That game may be a bit shallow, but it does make for some pretty incredible and exciting moments. Just wish it was co-op. My personal favorite moment: I had hijacked a helicopter and decided to take in the view at the top of a mountain. I flew up and carefully landed my helicopter, hopped out, and began to appreciate the vista. I soon heard a scraping noise, and wondering what it was, looked behind me just in time to see my helicopter go sliding off the edge of the cliff. I knew I'd have to grapple-chute all the way back to the city if I didn't salvage that chopper, so like a bad James Bond stunt, I dove off the cliff after my heli. After 10 seconds of exhilarating free-fall, I caught up to my chopper, grappled into the pilot seat, fired her up, and just barely managed to get her flying again before she crashed into the ground below. That was farking fun.
