Canyon High School will eliminate "Señores and Señoritas Day," an event where students were encouraged to don Latino-themed attire"... It was determined some students dressed in stereotypical fashion which was not appropriate, and that the actions of these students were demeaning,"

What the fark did you think would happen? You basically asked them to dress as stereotypes. Did you think kids in high school, an Orange County high school of all places, would embrace your carefully-planned little holiday with grace and a sensitive eye towards Latino heritage? Farking idiots.

One boy dressed as a gardener, while another boy dressed as a pregnant girl pushing a baby stroller. Others dressed as gang members with bandanas and teardrop tattoo replicas. Some students wore plaid Pendleton shirts, ponchos, large sombreros and mustaches. A few students dressed as INS agents, walking around the campus "arresting Mexican students."

OK, what are their Fark handles...

Laugh it up, douchebags. Have your fun. Enjoy it while you can.

"The United States has reached a historic tipping point -- with Latino, Asian, mixed race and African American births constituting a majority of births for the first time, theU.S. Census Bureau reported Thursday."

Because us Latinos aren't going anywhere. Hell, we were here before you arrived. Our numbers are growing (along with Blacks and other "minority groups"), and there's nothing you can do about it. We're marrying and impregnating your women, and doing a better job organizing politically day by day. WE'RE the ones breaking our asses doing the work so many of you won't. WE'RE the ones caring for your elderly family members. WE'RE the ones that are born of parents who worked 16 hours a day in factories to provide for and educate their children.

Sure, there will always be a percentage of knuckleheads that make the rest of us look bad. It's true with any group of people. But that doesn't ultimately change the facts presented. Respect us, and we'll respect you. Treat us like sh*t at your own (political) risk.

This is hilarious. Libs need a sense of humor.

At my cousin's rural high school she had a "Tractor Day" where most of the student population drove an actual tractor to school. Many dressed in typical "hillbilly" attire. Where were the libs to rescue them from themselves? Does OMG RACISMS not work when it's just white folks?

Please, won't someone be offended?!?!

It isn't bigotry to portray people as they are. It's just a statistical fact. I just moved from California and I am married to a Hispanic person who grew up in California. He was taken aback that our gardener here in Missouri is white. When Mexicans know and recognize that sometimes stereotypes are reality how you call them racist? I lived in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods the entire decade I stayed in Southern California. You can't hardly get a job in lawn care or the restaurant business unless you are Mexican and will work for less than minimum wage. Everywhere you go there is gang activity. Most of my neighbors were illegals who spoke little to no English, bragged about getting welfare while popping out anchor babies and driving new cars. The people were trash. I'm talking about San Diego by the beach not some inland, ghetto hood. It's no different in Orange county. If you don't think that is reality you must have never been to California or you are blind. Living in denial does not make the world your perfect utopia.

It is a strange day where I'm agreeing with DD99. Would dressing as Mexican peasants, or perhaps in Dia de las Muertes costumes been any more "sensitive?" Ponchos and sombreros were mentioned in TFA as offensive, too. Would quinceanera gowns been too much? Baseball players? Futbol players? Mariachi bands? None of those outfits represent "all Mexicans" by any stretch.

This just seems like the inevitable outcome of a really bad idea. If you asked a school full of Latino kids to dress as Mexicans, they would have done the same thing as the gringos.

I don't hire them, I have to work around them.

You fix networks? Wow! So that means you're not part of the stereotype, congrats! Still doesn't mean it isn't true to the other 99% that hang drywall or paint my house.

Unless since you work in networks you've become some 280 lb monstrosity that showers every 2 weeks, but thats a whole nother stereotype in its own right.

You can be pissed all you want, but just because you're one guy that pushed himself above all others; doesn't mean there isn't thousands behind you that don't fit the caricatures presented here. Maybe instead of getting pissed at those that recognize it, you could be constructive in helping your illegal brethren adapt a bit better to our society, instead of alienating themselves even further.

PsiChick: What I was actually trying to say is that a) rich people have a culture that we Americans tend to approve of more,

But in your statement that I originally replied to, you seemed to imply that Mexicans had inferior culture here because they were poor, going so far as to say that their culture is beautiful when they have opportunity. If that's true, that means that it's not just that Americans approve of "rich culture", right? It's at the very least American and Latin culture.

PsiChick: b) Americans do not like Mexicans. Or anyone Hispanic.

That is just as much of a stereotype as what is mentioned in the article. There are 300,000,000 people in the USA and they do not all dislike Mexicans (or anyone Hispanic). You cannot validate that statement without validating the claims of actual racists worldwide. Cultural generalization is a bad idea. Don't do it.

PsiChick: /...Um, 'more'? What, American, English, and Japanese culture aren't beautiful? It's not a zero-sum game here. Almost all cultures are beautiful in most aspects. The few that aren't tend to be small and self-destructive.

This was my mistake; I misunderstood the tone when you said that "Latino culture...is actually very beautiful." I thought that was an indication of exception from the norm; my apologies if I took it incorrectly. I agree that almost all cultures are, in their way, beautiful.

That's not the way it usually works. If the stereotype weren't generally true it wouldn't get repeated. As I said before, there is a good reason no one jokes about how bad asian kids are at math tests. There are exceptions but in general there has to be some truth to it in order for it to take off.

Well, it was the school's official "dress as a hispanic stereotype" day, that's explicitly what they were telling the kids to do.

Not really the kids' fault that many stereotypes aren't particularly complimentary. Mexico is a ridiculous stereotype of misogyny and plutocracy even today, and a good-sized chunk of central/south America is ruled by communist dictators, not really good associations there culturally speaking.

I mean, you could specify fancy sombreros and big skirts, but the historical period that's referencing had a literal aristocracy that made no effort whatsoever to allow the 99.9% of the population that were peasants even basic sustenance. The history of the Spanish colonies was a lot darker than that of the English ones.

//Well, US Civil War aside, that one was nastier than most of the other wars in the new world, mainly since the industrial revolution met warfare for the first time.

tl;dr version: you're wrong, stereotypes are based in falsities, you win nothing, good day sir.

I think generalizations and stereotypes suck as well, but oversimplified and biased doesn't mean they are based in falsities.

Is the guy in my neighborhood with 28 inch rims on his car black? Yes.
Was the Suburban with 24 inch rims I saw yesterday driven by a black guy? Yes.

Does that mean all black guys have cars with huge rims? Of course not.

But if you oversimplify you will get to the stereotype that most black guys love huge rims on their cars...the stereotype is based on an oversimplified fact.

Are there white guys that beat women that wear white tank top undershirts? yes
Does that mean all white guys the beat their wives wear wife beaters? Of course.

"statistical fact" is an inaccurate term but there is truth in most sterotypes in general. If not they wouldn't persist. You know why no one tells jokes about how the asian kid is always failing math tests? Assuming that the stereotype is true for every individual in the group is wrong, but pretending like they aren't generally true (most of the time) is ignorant.

You both seem to be missing one crucial piece of information: Orange is probably the most conservative county in the state. It is solidly Republican; has been for decades. It has everything to do with kids behaving inappropriately and doing things that could lead to violent confrontations.
