Good luck decapitating me with that thing, though.

cman: John Titor #5?

WTF? That guy should be #1. It is amazing how many people bought his idiotic bullshiat.

Asshole claimed he went back in time to get parts for an IBM360, a computer made in the 1960s.

People for some reason bought it

Wasn't part of the story he needed the IBM360 for a "specific reason" that turned out only a handful of people who worked at IBM and the USGovernment in the 60's knew it was capable of doing and actually used for.

I never believed it, but it was a great story. Entertaining, thought provoking... and internally consistent. He had plausible answers for almost everything, and a lot of his science he discussed was true, and/or theoretically possible at least. Even his reason for wanting the old IBM made sense. All in all, it was a great work of fiction and I am glad I got to read/follow along with it.

I use to listen to Coast to Coast nearly every night. I'd always hear Art and George go on and on about him, but I've never actually read any of his posts. Is there an archive of them somewhere?

The Third Man: Yeah, he was fun to read. Unlike most crackpots (if that's what he was) he had some definite writing skills. It seems to me that he actually seemed to be test-driving the John Titor character for a novel which never got published...shame, really, because it might have been a good read.

John Titor was awesome. I spent a good night some years ago reading the entire transcript of all his emails and forum posts, and it was really fascinating to hear his description of events.

Still utterly ridiculous, though. It was basically a militia/teabagger/survivalist wish fulfillment fantasy: America has a 10-year Civil War with itself between the rural heartland rubes and the urban ivory tower liberal city folk (in the form of "a Ruby Ridge type scenario once a month"). For no particular reason, the rest of the world gets involved and Russia nukes all the American cities, which allows the Real 'Mericans -- the side John Titor is on -- to win the war.

He had a lot of transgressions against the government, as his types often do. Completely implausible, but fascinating reading nonetheless.

Rastapopulous: Somebody needs to make a really good, and as serious as possible, time travel movie. I'd go see it in a second.

I heard Primer was ok but still haven't seen it. Due to the subject matter, time travel movies seem to always be campy. I wish they'd make an actual 'what-if' time travel movie.

Primer was good. My only gripe was that towards the end it seemed like the writers went out of their way to make it difficult to follow...like they had a more fleshed out script and removed key scenes from it.

Give me a break - it took me a while to get that old computer to a point where I could get a Fark account.

Lets face it, the timeline I came from pretty much sucked, and though everything seemed to be going just as it happened, it didn't stop me from trying to make the one I live in now a better place. So this time around I made sure Bush got a second term. Though it didn't stop the underlying current of civil discontent, it did placate certain groups enough that it seems the disaster was averted. Its kind of a strange feeling that similar things are happening, but at different times than I remember, and certainly a different outcome thanks to the Lorenz Effect.

Its actually kind of refreshing having a few surprises.

I feel more like I do now than I did a while ago.

2012-08-24 03:15:33 PM
The trouble with time travel isn't when you land but where you land. Considering the constant, rapid speed that the Earth, Sun, and galaxy moves through space, jumping even a second forward or back will probably place you deep within the Earth or somewhere in outer space.

Just a thought...

2012-08-24 03:18:03 PM
Fark, what has happened to you?

I used to enjoy lurking on science and geek threads so I could learn something or hear a cool story, bro. Or maybe just read something fantastical and well-written. In fact, I frequently search for old threads on space, time travel, and aliens just to have my mind blown by the occasional well-informed quip

now, all i find in potentially exciting threads are lame jokes, political garbl, and farking nonsense.

yes, i know "WELCOME TO FARK". but we used to be better than this.

I think the article tells some very cool stories (like the old french ladies and the british air force dude) and yet all anyone wants to do here is fill the thread with worthless comments.

where's the science!? where's the cool ideas for movies no one has ever made!? where's the informative and interesting CSBs?!

i demand a better thread, starting NOW!

I'd love it if a good movie were to be made from:

LandStander: Of course, the Chronovisor isn't an actual time machine, because that would be silly; it was more like a time window. The device allowed anyone using it to look anywhere into the past, and watch whatever events they desired.

Orson Scott Card approves.

Unfortunately, the script I saw way back when on Card's own website (hatrack.com) started the movie in the second part of the book, right when they actually do travel back in time. The best part of the book is the first part, leading up to that.

Good helloings sir and madame,

I am writing to be requesting your aid in a financial affair. I have traveled from the year 2108 where my country Kenya has fallen on poor fiscal times. I am traveling to the year 1922 to be making investments in stock markets which will rise in value by the time I return to my own time. I require a small loan of money to make the innitial investment. If you can send me the sum of 5,000 American dollars, this will allow me to make investments that will ensure my countries' financial future. In return I will use some of the monies to buy stock markets in your name which will rise in value to millions of dollars by the year 2012. Please assist me by forwarding the money and proving me with account numbers.

Sincerely Prince Umfufu XXVIII

Whatever, dude... I drove from New Mexico to Texas this morning and went forward an hour in a matter of mere seconds. Suck it.
