"There was a truck that slammed into this car". Yup... typical reporter, trying to tell us what we saw even though he didn't see it himself, and getting it all vice-versa-ey

No video in the article? Or no video on the mobile version?

A local TV station wanted to show a local traffic problem, all that video equipment alongside the interstate caused a 10 mile long traffic jam.

That car looked like it was going way too fast, but it wouldn't surprise me if the guys in the truck were rubber-necking and going way too slow.

It's a shame the piece wasn't about a dangerous intersection. Then subby could have used the Ironic tag, and we could have had a 200 post thread biatching about subby using the Ironic tag.

HICKORY, N.C. -

As Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty was live on the scene of a possible homicide on Springs Road in Hickory, he ecame a witness to a car crash.

Is that why the reporter keeps apologizing?

It's a little tough to tell from the video snippet. But it looks to me like the rednecks in the truck had come to nearly a dead stop in the left lane of a 4-lane road (presumably to gawk at the teevee man), when they were rear-ended by the guy in the car who failed to notice the stopped truck. It seems like the car was going about the same speed as the car that came through immediately afterward, so I don't think it was going too fast.

Nevertheless I'm going to award dumbass points to everyone involved in that accident.

I'm going to go ahead and say this guy would make a lousy witness.

If you're behind a stopped vehicle, anything more than 0 mph is too fast.

It looked to me like they were at an intersection, and the truck stopped for a light (in fact, you can quite clearly see the lights of the intersection). The truck started to move when the light changed, and the car slammed into the back of it. I would guess that the car driver A) fell asleep or B) didn't see the truck (maybe because of the light from the cameraman or maybe just from not paying attention). The reason why the car wasn't more messed up than it was is because the truck had started moving and the car slid somewhat under it, making it a way better crash than it could've been.

It was going quite a bit faster than the car that came though after.

Rubbernecking truck or not the car had plenty of time to react. In fact, you don't hear any brakes applied until the car is about halfway across the screen and maybe ten feet away from the truck.

You're right, the lights were kind of behind the poles in the foreground and I totally missed them. Light must have turned green right as the truck was pulling up to it, because it kind of rolls to a near-stop and then starts right back up. I hereby rescind the dumbass points for the pickup and award them to the driver of the car, who probably would have either run the light or just about run it had he not plowed into the pickup instead.

This happens a lot and there are lots of videos on YouTube about it happening a lot. People get distracted by seeing cameras and crash.

I got rear-ended on an on-ramp once because some stupid whore in front of me came to a dead stop at the yield sign for no reason, so I'm getting a kick....

/ also, anybody who stops at a yield sign when the merge point is clear should get face cancer and die a slow, painful death
// my rental car sucked and it took them three weeks to do repairs
/// other guy's insurance must have paid out the ass, because I'm pretty sure his car was totaled... let's just say the wheels and the body weren't pointing in the same direction anymore

I've seen several of these types of videos and I've noticed something similar in many of them that really speaks to the dedication of local newsmen (newspersons?) everywhere. Almost never does the reporter even consider leaving his reporting duty to go and check if those involved are okay. It's really admirable who uncompromising some reporters are when it comes to the dutiful execution of their craft.

Noteworthy exception and hilariously appropriate to the thread :
jump to :20 mark

Remember in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the reporter mentions never having caught a car crash on film? Now we have websites dedicated to showing nothing but.

Both drivers were looking at the reporter. The truck slowed down, the car didn't.

A 'way better crash' would have been if both vehicles exploded into fireballs with Swagneto flying out of the middle.

I'm sorry if I'm stating the obvious here... Don't you think the news crew bares some responsibility for that accident to begin with? The reporter didn't acknowledge it. But the fact is, this almost certainly only happened because the driver of the car was looking at the news crew to see what was going on!!

The way the passenger side of the windshield is caved in, that guy is lucky he didn't hit the truck square on. His head would be rolling around the back seat.

No. It's your responsibility to keep your eyes on the road. It doesn't matter what else is happening.

I know. I thought about that. And that is the letter of the law. But making an obvious distraction that causes an accident is still a bad thing.

Vegan Meat Popsicle: I got rear-ended on an on-ramp once because some stupid whore in front of me came to a dead stop at the yield sign for no reason, so I'm getting a kick....

Similar thing happened to me. I was driving down an on-ramp where there looked to be a crew setting up and police activity (probably there to oversee the work crew set up?) and the car ahead of me made a dead stop and I only barely avoided hitting them. Then as they pulled out and woman just slammed right into me. She came up to my car and yelled "Why did you stop?!" The cop had her pull into the shoulder and he took down her information because she barely spoke English. He even let her drive off when he gave me the accident report. He took down her name and the name of her insurance company and nothing else while I filled everything out on that report. After I finally got her insurance company to cooperate with me I got some harassing phone calls from her. Ugh... I hate whoever it was that made that sudden stop on the ramp so effing much.
