"Are you lying to me right now?"

And then the reporter never gets another interview again. You would need them all to do it, all at once, for it to have any effect. And if life has taught me anything, it's that one network would give softball interviews and get everyone while the other networks struggle, and then tout themselves as the only place one can get good news.

If you don't want to be lied to then start calling politician out for lying. To have credibility you need to call out politicians whose positions you support as well as those with whom you disagree. When you call out the political for lying, provide proof and cited sources that show the politician lied. Become a credible source for information instead of the stooges that you allow yourself to be. It is the journalists who turned their profession into the joke that it is today. Now stop whinning and do some real reporting.

And then the people you call out stop talking to you and everyone who saw what you did stops talking to you too and... well, you're not much of a reporter once that happens.

/not saying I'm happy about it, but there is a legitimate reason why reporters aren't usually combative.

I like their excuse that they can't throw down on Congress because then Congresspeople won't give them access. Fine. Go back to reporting and finding access then.

And access to what exactly?

It's a BS excuse that sounds better than, "Yeah, I'm really just a whore, a bought and paid for PR flack who is more afraid of unemployment than journalistic ideals."

The politician's schedule. If they never grant you an interview, you have to resort to either cornering them on the street (not likely to get you anything other than nothing or an angry response - which riles up the folks, but is just O'Keefey) or following their activities (not stalking, but reporting on their votes and meetings).

If you're a well-known enough person, eventually you'll reach some sort of detente, but the more well-known are generally in that situation for working well within the "rules".

So some of it is getting along just to get along, and some of it is laziness. And, I think, some of them think journalism is dutifully reporting only on "he said-she said" and anything else is for the tabloids and Glenn Beck. Fact-chacking shows your biases, you see, and biases are incompatible with journalism (except for biases that favor American Exceptionalism, mom, baseball, apple pie, flags, the Founding Fathers...you get my point).

Reporters simply need to follow-up every answer they get with "I don't believe you". Alternately, the reporters could mime stroking the air in the traditional "I'd prefer to masturbate than here this BS" gesture.

This. What stops a reporter from saying:

1) that isn't true
2) baloney
3) that is factually wrong
4) you are lying
5) bullshiat
...

If a reporter is being lied to everyday they should be saying something like these examples everyday also
