In all fairness, all the medical professionals in my family have always told me that binge drinking will definitely up the risk of cancer. One says they've seen too many patients who abuse alcohol and end up with pancreatic cancer (read here: a 6% five year survival rate = the deadliest type of cancer).

A rough-and-tumble life does catch up with you eventually, that's just common sense. This study only confirms what most healthcare providers already knew.

My solution, folks:

Drink the good stuff. Drink it in moderation, and enjoy every drop!

Tea blossoms.

Chinese tea makers take long cut tea leaves and certain flowers and tie them up into a little ball and dry it. When you add hot water (or probably ANY liquid) to said ball it "blooms" into what you see in the glasses.

In other words, they're probably drinking tea and this is just a stock photo.

good on you, mate. life is too short. i've always thought highly of the 'eat, drink and be merry - for tomorrow we will surely die' lifestyle. there are no guarantees. don't wait for 'someday'. get the fark out there and tell those you care for that you love them. tell them twice and give them a hug. don't take tomorrow for granted.

Not long after informing you that scientists have initial data that yes, this thing they thought might happen does happen sometimes, . . . the article mentions that most people have a very robust system in place to take care of the related damage.

Except for a portion of Asiatic peoples. If you're a flushed, sweaty Asian drunk, all the rice, vegetables, and moderate meat intake in the world won't save you.

tl;dr: If you're Korean, you should send me all your soju.

Asa Phelps: Anything that causes cellular replication causes cancer.

No, anything that causes mutations causes cancer.

2012-08-24 03:47:32 AM
Actually let me rephrase that, most things that cause cell mutations can cause cancer, Kinda sorta maybe. I think the idea is that the body can handle most things so long as you don't bombard it.

Professor Balbo pointed out that people have a highly effective natural repair mechanism for correcting the damage from DNA adducts.
Most people thus are unlikely to develop cancer from social drinking, although alcohol is associated with a risk of other health problems and accidents.
In addition, most people have an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, which quickly converts acetaldehyde to acetate, a relatively harmless substance.
