Why not try "by-the-pound" pricing?

For those of us who can be safely stored in overhead compartments, I'm perfectly ok with this business plan.

This. It's the dimensions of the seat's frame that are changing, not the area that the passenger sits in that are changing.

Added bonus if it also encourages passengers to use a bathroom before they get on the plane.

They really need to re-allow smoking on flights what with the TSA happy endings and all. But I suppose even worse service for the same prices fits the theme.

I'm no engineer & I'm not going to start playing one on the internet. At least today. YOU just wait till tomorrow.

How is that possible, if the leg room is staying the same, but you add more seats. LIES!!!

That's just farking great. Everytime I get on a plane I have to put up with some fat ass spilling over his or her seat into mine. Now I'm going to have to deal with more violation by blubber.

If it's the seat I'm thinking of, they do it by decreasing the thickness of the seatback. Legroom stays the same, but seating density goes up. I've used these seats, and they're not bad.

I'm 5'9" 135 and I still find US Airways' coach seating on A320s too damn small for my barely existent ass.

Ya, it's gonna be the same seats Lufthansa uses on some European flights. This discussion has already occurred: Link

My last flight to Taipei I had a 300+ pound woman sit next to me I had the middle seat. She wanted the armrest up and started crying when I insisted it stay down. This is a 13 hour flight that is always full and worse she worked for Benny Hinn and was a bit proselyting.

/I relented and let her keep the armrest up after a couple of hours.

I'm shocked they actually considered the passengers. I keep expecting them to install handrails you can hold onto while standing and a bell so you can tell the driver you want to get off at the next stop.

Aisle seats should be reserved for people over 6', and fark all of you who think that just because you're rail thin - everyone else has to be. Some of us actual have that stuff called muscle, which makes us have different dimensions than someone who has trouble opening doors.

You compress it less though. Still, if I read it right they're going to a 'better' quality padding, perhaps a stiffer semi-memory foam. Think of it like the difference between a CRT and LCD Monitor. For the most part, all you care about is the presentation part, the display. The ability to go from a 2' deep CRT to a 2" deep LCD and now to a .75" LED LCD just offers other benefits.

Foam hasn't progressed that much, but it has progressed.

The key to avoid sitting next to fatties on flights is to grab seating near the back of the plane. With any luck, the blubberbusses won't make it that far.

We have semi-strict assigned seating in the US, so that really isn't an option here.
Some airlines actually make the (coach flying) lardasses sit in the very back seats, since they could block the aisle in an emergency.

Obviously if they combined airline seat allocation with a dating service, that matched coupes up based on sexuality and attractiveness, they could then fit two to a seat. There would have to be a surveillane web-cam service for married customers so their spoue could check they are not having too much fun.

If you're a bony arse, then you're getting club class transportation for economy prices. So regardless whether you had to work out every 26 minutes and survive on "rocket", "soya" and "cous-cous" only, or were just born a midget, either way you're doing OK out of the deal so

I think KLM might have the Recaro seats now as well - not sure, but they definitely went to a thinner seatback from some manufacturer in the last ~5 years. They're not bad.

Actually, you are winning on food, water, boose (you pay less to the brewer and in duty per unit lareyness). You get more out of cigs and illegal narcotics. Houses seem bigger and ceilings seem higher, so you can sort-of pretend your park home is something like Saddam's grand palace.

OTOH the thing about rain reaching you last is a myth - it has more momentum when it does reach you, resulting in larger downward-directed impulse, helping to keep you short. This is why height inequality only rises in spite of Obama's spendthrift programmes. Obama is to blame in fact.

Subby do you live in a different plane of the universe than the rest of us?
Since when has the airline industry ever been about trying to find a solution to accomidate larger passengers?
Other than providing more comfort to premium priced ticket holders over the cheap seats. Airlines have always been about fitting more for the buck.
And don't even suggest the removal of armrests. Its one thing to have to share an armrest with someone elses elbow. Its quite another to have to share seat space with somelses fat ass!

Hell, some of us just have a frame that isn't made for the pathetic dimensions they expect you to fit into. When the seat is only 17" wide and my shoulders are 24", it's just not going to work out well. So no, drunk lady who got on at the last minute because she spent all her time at the bar and insists on wedging herself into the middle seat, no I cannot give you any more arm room because physics does not allow it.

Snotnose: That's just farking great. Everytime I get on a plane I have to put up with some fat ass taking up the space my fat ass needs. Now I'm going to have to deal with more violation by blubber.

As many men do, I "run hot", as in my body puts off a lot of heat. It not only makes me a choice snuggling companions in the winter months, it also gives me a rather insidious defense; all I have to do is let the blubber stay in contact with me for about 10 minutes. Before they realize it the fatso is feeling like they're cooking, and they start shifting away. A few subtle shifts on my part, and within about 25 minutes they'll be doing everything they can to keep their blubber contained in the seat, instead of spilling over the armrest into terra del heato.
