Ape Shiat Nuts: "Dear Marty,

If my calculations are correct, you will receive this letter immediately after you saw the DeLorean struck by lightning. First, let me assure you that I am alive and well. I've been living happily these past eight months in the year 1885. The lightning bolt that hit the DeLorean caused a gigawatt overload which scrambled the time circuits, activated the flux capacitor, and sent me back to 1885. The overload shorted out the time circuits and destroyed the flying circuits. Unfortunately, the car will never fly again.

I set myself up as a blacksmith as a front while I attempted to repair the damage to the time circuits. Unfortunately, this proved impossible because suitable replacement parts will not be invented until 1947. However, I've gotten quite adept at shoeing horses and fixing wagons.

I have buried the DeLorean in the abandoned Delgado Mine, adjacent to the Old Boot Hill Cemetery, as shown on the enclosed map. Hopefully, it should remain undisturbed and preserved until you uncover it in 1955. Inside you will find repair instructions. My 1955 counterpart should have no problem repairing it so that you can drive it back to the future. Once you have returned to 1985, destroy the time machine.

Do not, I repeat, do not attempt to come back here to get me. I am perfectly happy living in the fresh air and the wide-open spaces, and I fear that unnecessary time travel only risks further disruption of the space-time continuum. And please take care of Einstein for me. I know that you will give him a good home. Remember to walk him twice a day, and that he only likes canned dog food. These are my wishes; please respect them and follow them.

And so Marty, I now say farewell and wish you Godspeed. You've been a good, kind, and loyal friend to me. You've made a real difference in my life. I will always treasure our relationship and think on you with fond memories, warm feelings, and a special place in my heart.

Your friend in time,

'Doc' Emmett L. Brown.

...

And then when Marty gets there he gets attacked by Indians who puncture the tank with an arrow. Dc and Marty solve their fuel problems using destroying it and a bridge in the process forgetting about the other time machine which was also in 1885 that had originally brought Doc which probably still had an intact fuel tank. Not to mention that the placement of the tank was kinda... well aren't most tanks usually located in a place where it would be virtually impossible if not difficult at the very least for a fired arrow to penetrate?

If that's a pop culture reference, then I wanna know the source.

If that's not a pop culture reference, then Gene Wolfe or Neil Gaiman needs to write a novel on that topic.

Last time I waited for a "time capsule" to be opened was in 2000 when they were going to open up a small wooden box sealed by Edison back when he was working on trying to contact the dead. He left specific instructions not to open it early as the world was not yet ready to learn what it contained.

I saw the box. Used to be, at the Edison's summer home tour in Ft Myers, you could reach out and touch it over the velvety ropes if you wanted. But only one old tourguide ever explained that this was a time capsule and what it may possibly contain.

I wonder what that old guy's fark handle was.

I also wonder if they still proudly show off Edison's electric spoon prototype.

Ohgods, tell me about it :P

(Long story summarised: My mother the Marguerite Perrin clone (rest in pieces) was, I think, the only person who not only voluntarily ATE the stuff but actually LIKED it. I consider this prima facie proof that she was Not Right In The Head (as if the other stuff wasn't proof enough!), because anyone with any sense knows that store fruitcake is an unnatural substance that is less manufactured and more mined from some dark pit with a vaguely Lovecraftian name to it.)

/now, proper Italian fruitcake (which has actual CAKE in it, and is soaked in rum) is a different thing altogether
//it is also completely unrelated to that unnatural substance labeled as "fruitcake" and sold in grocery stores that aren't called "Fresh Market" around December

ShamWowofDamocles : As weird as this may seem, the Daily Mail has a better article
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2192632/To-opened-2012-The-se c ret-mysterious-parcel-wrapped-1912-unveiled-Norwegian-town.html

From that link: The parcel was left in the council's care in 1920 by Johan Nygaard, a former chairman of Sel council in Otta, who had wrapped and sealed it eight years earlier on the anniversary of the legendary Battle of Kringen. The battle stood in Otta in 1612 between local peasants and Scottish mercenary soldiers on their way through the Norwegian woods to enlist to fight in the Swedish army during Kalmar War between Denmark-Norway and Sweden. Miraculously the Norwegian peasants won and it is believed that the contents of the package may have some connection to the battle 400 years ago.

It's all papers or very small things. The guy who left it says it will be worth something to the town in 100 years. I'm guessing that it is some egoistical military historian who has written a detailed version of this obscure battle that wants it to be remembered. Perhaps there is some kind of flag in with it.

An arrow didn't puncture the fuel tank. He drove the Delorean off-road and off a small cliff (that was the cave entrance), rocks and debris either dented and punctured the fuel tank itself or severed the fuel line to the engine, thus allowing the fuel to escape. Totally plausible and more than likely, if you would like to take your car to a desert and try it yourself.

Also, the second Delorian, which took Doc back in time, has run out of fuel and has been damaged by the lightning bolt. All of this is explained very plainly and obviously in the film...I haven't seen it in years and know this offhand.

The Delorian that is left behind when Marty travels to 1985 is presumably used as the base for Docs new time machine built from a steam locomotive.

SImple. In 2015, as part of the flight conversion, a pollution-to-fuel generator was installed where the old fuel tank was. This is part of why 2015 was so clean compared to 1985. Anyway, being part of the flight system, it was one of the things destroyed by the lightning strike. One of the 1955 repairs made was to install a fuel tank and run new fuel lines, which by nature of the other modifications made had to run on the outside of the car.
