You've got to be kidding me, right?

This is a man who is on the House Science Committee. A, ostensibly, educated person who is making decisions at the highest levels of Government in the United States.

And he spouts off with something like this? Really?

Republicans no longer have any right to complain about the characterization of their party by the words of the Akins and Huckabees of the United States. They are guilty of the exact same gambit they were calling every unpopular group out on over the last ten to eleven years, while pretending not to be characterized by these people.

Guess what, skippy. Your group is defined by the actions of the few who are viable to the media. If you were actually the party of Lincoln, and actually gave a damn about being portrayed as anything more than this, you would be screaming to the top of your lungs, from the highest mountain, how this man is an idiot. How he does not represent the values of the republican party.

This was not a gaff. This was not a one time deal. This person actually believes the tripe he said.

impaler:

You really think the GOP shills would -- or even could -- talk about the actual issues this election cycle?

This guy believes that lady parts are magic and wrote a bill in Congress to that effect.

A co-author of that bill wrote a budget bill which would have replaced Medicare and Medicaid with "$6000 off your next surgery!" coupons.

That guy is the running mate of the GOP's Presidential candidate, who is running on his business acumen and his executive experience as a state Governor.... except he doesn't want anybody talking about his business acumen, as it involved running profitable businesses into the ground because they weren't profitable enough so that he can line his own pockets with the carcasses, all the while making the employees of those businesses build stages for the express purpose of having his buddies stand on those stages and fire those workers; and he doesn't want anyone talking about his government executive experiences, either, since his crowning achievement was the blueprint for the pinnacle of his opponent's domestic policy.
And he prevented the last Olympics to take place in America from burning itself into the ground.... but nobody's allowed to talk about that, either, since he did it using a government handout.
And he pays "over 20%" in total taxes and "donations" to "charity" combined... but we're not allowed to know exactly how much he paid to Uncle Sam, how much he paid for his Jesus Club membership dues, anything else he might have paid or anything he might NOT have paid because every time anybody asks, he cowers behind his sick wife's skirt and soils his battle panties while she says "we paid the minimum required by law, and you people have no right to see our tax papers!"

I can't really blame them for not being too keen on discussing the actual issues, what with them being too busy defending the indefensible.

This can't be emphasized enough. He apologized for his "poor choice of words", but guess what? He's NOT changing any of his policies, and he STILL doesn't want abortion as an option for women who are raped. Words are irrelevant, just look at his stance on these issues... they're absolutely medieval.

The only thing he's sorry about is that everyone else made a big deal about what he believes.

This has now degenerated into an elementary school argument

It was an elementary school-level argument on Akin's side to begin with. His opening statement was that girls have magic in their hoo-haas that makes it so they only get pregnant when they want to. That's the argument of a kid who hasn't taken a health class and gets his knowledge about the female body from talking with the older boys on the playground.

This is not all that different than the asshats who want to outlaw late term and partial birth abortion because they don't want to acknowledge that pregnancies can go horribly wrong or sometimes pregnant women get seriously sick or injured. To them, ladyparts are simultaneously disgusting and magical.

Shaggy_C: Greil: God you're stupid.

You read the word "Abort-O-Matic" and thought I was being serious?!?

Huggermugger: The goal is not to kill the baby, the goal is to spare the rape victim nine months of constant agonizing reminder of her rape. And then having to make the terrible decision of whether to surrender the child to adoption, or to raise it herself while spending the next 18 years trying to protect her child from the contempt and hatred of the world.

I'm pro-abortion as can be, so the post was a bit facetious...However, I do think it's a bit odd that people who think any and all abortion is murder can somehow be ok with it in the case of rape. It's pretty strange to me; like saying you're against the death penalty except in cases where the convicted criminal was a murderer. And even beyond the "DoubleThink" nature of it - if you think a blastocyst is a human being, shouldn't it be just as morally reprehensible to kill one as another, regardless of how it was formed? I guess I don't understand the mental gymnastics that allow someone to have those kinds of beliefs.

The ethical argument goes like this. Suppose you're swimming along and see someone in distress. What is your moral obligation to help them? It depends. Do you reasonably fear for your own life if you try?
Analogously, even if an unborn one is equally "valuable" as an independently viable human being, must a woman sacrifice her health and freedom to support that life? To what costs, to what limit? The burden is higher if carrying the child is a reminder of a trauma and what right do others have to say how much burden is or isn't too great.

There are myriad other perspectives, many highly flawed on a biological or logical basis. But the question of what burden one life owes to another remains an ambiguous ethical dilemma in or outside of the abortion context.

Shaggy_C: The Why Not Guy: Can any of the Republican posters out there explain why the GOP is suddenly letting their hatred of women flow freely? Why do you hate women? Because none of this makes any sense to normal people, from "Sandra Fluke is a Slut" to "Rape Victims Can't Get Pregnant" to whatever terrifying trick you have up your old white male sleeves for next week.

We Republicans don't hate women, we hate moral turpitude. That you would lump good, honest Christian women in with the abort-o-matic 'free love' types is the precisely why it is in fact you Libs who are the true sexist ones. You lump all women into the same category, we differentiate them based upon the amount of sexual intercourse they partake in.

As in, any at all deserves to be punished.

And really you hate moral turpitude but call yourself a Republican? The closest you get to a proper definition for that is "act of baseness, vileness or depravity in the private and social duties which a man owes to his fellowmen, or to society in general, contrary to the accepted and customary rule of right and duty between man and man."

It's not moral turpitude to send our jobs overseas? To collect million while your employees lose their 401K? To attempt to force upon your fellow man rules of a faith which he is not a part? To continue wars even after your reasons for entry have been shown demonstrably false? To hold the employees of the federal government hostage by not passing the bill that can pay them until you get what you want? To purposefully shelter millions of dollars from taxes, stockpiling where it does no one any good while others get fired for the business not making enough? To suggest that doctors should demand payment before treatment and cast out those who can't pay? To lie, every minute of every hour of every day of the year, about your political opponents and their positions and ideas, engaging them in a mudslinging contest instead of real debate?

God you're stupid.

Also, I checked your profile: you use a program that erases not only your ignore list but anyone who quotes someone who's on it. Just like a Republican, if you don't like what you see or hear put on the bible blinders and stick your fingers in your ears.

I support this idea. Require all the person's assets (stocks and bonds, not homes or small businesses) be converted to government bonds. Small businesses can not be directly managed (control is transfered to a business partnmer or family member, but not spouse). Anyone who is an executive in a major corporation if absolutely forbidden to have any interaction with that business, their lobbiests, or representatives (e.g. lawyers) in any way. Prison terms should be handed out for violating that law.

I would accept exemptions for a very limited set of reasons, e.g. you have a fatal illness and you are bit busy dying at the moment.

Alright. Tell me what the Republicans can do to fix the economy.

And no bumper sticker slogans...please.

You can only say "Obama sucks" for so long before people ask..."what makes you guys so much better"?

Tax cuts for the rich and loosened corporate regulations! After all, that's worked in the past, and in no way caused the current mess!

Have you ever had the dream in which it turns out your entire life was one gigantic setup for a surprise party that was the worst surprise party ever? And it won't stop? Not even after you wake up in a cold sweat, drink some Chivas and milk, down a half dozen vicodin, murmur obsceneties at the cat who doesn't give a sh*t, and pass out face down on the floor under the mail slot?

Thunderbox: Akin needs to go on a ' fact finding mission ' which includes a few nights in the cells with Bubba, to find the real meaning of the word rape.

With any luck he'll get ass pregnant with a rabid badger.

I'm pretty sure Claire McCaskill can safely disregard any helpful suggestions proffered by the increasingly unhinged Akin campaign.

Obvious troll is painfully obvious.

And concerned.

Maybe, but under Akin's rules, she won't be able to abort the election.

But one might say her election win is a gift that came from rape

Soup4Bonnie: "The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48 percent after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is," Perry Akin, the congressman's campaign manager and son, said in a statement Thursday. "If she can't break 50 percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down.

She should be beating us by more than this and if she isn't then she sucks? This is a strategy?

Looks like he knows as much about campaign strategy as he does about human anatomy.
