...a short-lived logo that was just a spurious umlaut away from being a heavy metal band.

I really liked that for some reason...

Unfortunately, the logo isn't particularly ugly, just a bit bland, so it's hard to get worked up by it. Maybe if they did something with Comic Sans.

I think it needs a lens flare.

Someone will have to redraw the google --> microsoft animation, which I can't find. Google-fu weak today.

It looks straight out of the 70's for the solid tones used in the color blocks. I could care less about how "Microsoft" looks on it.

Looks like Microsoft fell into the gap of third-rate logos.

I misread this as "Deconstructing Minecraft's new logo" and clicked.

I left as soon as I realized my mistake.

Kind of sums up Microsoft in the 201x's really. A bit bland, hard to get worked up over... not that ugly to look at but if has got some rather sharp edges you need to watch out for.

I was hoping for Comic Sans.

I did not see it until you pointed it out. I was too hung up on the logo looking like the sole source of light in the Unibomber's cabin.

My theory is that the entire board and executive team at Microsoft read Steve Job's bio and said, "we've got to totally do that".

I was expecting an analysis of the reasoning behind each logo. That article failed to provide the backgrounds.

The 1980 logo needs to be brought back forthwith.

Lordamercy, I'd forgotten about that thing. I wonder just how much that design company managed to bill for coming up with that. Of course, they probably went through 120 other logos that actually looked like something before the CEO decided on that stale cheese pizza of a logo.

Today your logo has to be simple and square enough to fit in a Facebook or Twitter page thumbnail. End of story.

Flat, boring and out of touch. It reflects Microsoft perfectly.

Ya know. I think it might almost be worse than when Lucent Technologies released their coffee stain crayon logo.

The "metal" Microsoft logo is awesome. But I think Lars would have sued them for copyright infringement.

At that point, Bill Gates could have sued Lars.

F*ck's sake, if you're going to go for boring and typical for Microsoft, why not use Arial?

Everything about that logo say "we are boring and you only use us because you've already paid thousands of dollars for database programs that run on our crap."

That Lucent logo definitely is a stinker.
