"Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis"

Ya know, we do have this language, and it is called English. If I remember correctly, a lot of people in this country speaks that language. I would ask that you use said tongue for the benefit of the lowly lewd folk.

Yeah, that shiat is pretty scary. I use a neti pot to clean out my sinuses, and after hearing reports of the amoebas, I made damn sure to buy some bottled water at Target to use when I was in Baton Rouge for work.

To be fair, this is a common amoeba and is in soil everywhere. It just doesn't do well in water unless it is very warm. Also, it can only get to your brain if you get a lot of amoeba infected water into your nose...it gets to your brain by going through your olfactory bulb which is where your sense of smell happens. The bulb is really small. It's like the death star weakness of the brain, to this amoeba.

Irrigating your sinuses is a really stupid idea anyway. You not only can get amoebas like this but also mold, yeast, and parasites. A yeast or mold infection in your sinuses can literally eat your face right off and it's damn hard to treat.

FTA: One bright spot: "A person cannot be infected with N.fowleri by drinking contaminated water," they wrote.

Well, what if they're drinking the water while they're reading the comments section on Fark.com and some imbecile makes a ribald comment and makes them snarf water into their nasal cavity? All you motherfarkers need to quit with the hilarity and just stick to the inane and mildly amusing stuff.

N/M, I see you're all way ahead of me...

People fill their neti pots with tap water? That is crazy. I wouldn't put tap water in my mouth let alone up my nose.

Use distilled water if you insist on snorting it up your nose. Maybe even boil it too to play it safe.

Even with distilled and/or boiled water it's not safe because boiling doesn't kill all spores and bacteria. It might make it safe enough to drink but putting it in your sinuses is insane.

Good timing, but holding off on this for a year?

FTFA: That's exactly what CDC investigators found when they swabbed the plumbing in the houses of two people who died of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis in 2011.

So...they found stuff last year. Time to panic!

It's not bad if you're using purified water. Use distilled, filtered water and it's actually quite therapeutic on the sinuses.

Use tap water? Yeah, you're looking to join the Brain Slug Party in their support of unreasonably huge subsidies to the Brain Slug Homeworld.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news:

Guess what comes in bottles, can be up to 25% ordinary municipal supply without a label warning in some jurisdictions, is no better (and in some cases worse) than tap water and still be called "Pure, Natural Spring".

If lotteries are a tax on people who suck at math, bottled water is a fraud on people who suck at being consumers.

If it can survive distillation and boiling, then frankly, it deserves to kill me. It's earned it.
