It says she got back on I-10. I'm thinking that due to the accident the freeway was jammed and she was cruising on the shoulder. So even the police cruiser was trapped in the gridlock. It may have been that officer radioed ahead for a cruiser to meet her at the next exit and then they tossed the bike in her trunk and the cruiser drove her in via secondary roads.

This was in Baton Rouge LA, the police there ride Big Wheels so no, it would not have been quicker.

If so, why was surgery started before the doctor was in-house?

In every scheduled surgery situation that I and family members have had the doctor has shown up at the patient's bedside before surgery for a reassuring "chat." In the only emergency surgery situation, the ER doctor was "sleeping in the back" (seemed drugged out of his mind to me) when he was called to the patient whose minor-looking puncture wound suddenly started to hemorrhage. I wasn't the patient and they didn't even take time to throw me out of the operating room where we had been waiting for the past hour or so. My ex, who faints at the sight of blood, scared them when he started to passout. Fortunately, I knew he would faint if he looked at what they were doing and didn't freak as much as the staff.

Not sure about all the answers, but the article says nothing about the patient waiting on a table, only subby did:

So I'd be shocked if any surgery or prep had actually begun. It was probably more like "this is supposed to happen around 9, it's 840, im not gonna make it" sort of deal. Also the article says it was a traffic accident that caused the jam so I don't see how leaving earlier would make a difference unless it was 2 minutes after it happened.

And for some surgeries, having a Plan B might not necessarily be easy. If its a specialized surgery and there are only a handful of capable docs, and the others are busy... they can't just call in a junior doctor and (potentially) can't postpone. Also if I were the patient, I would feel better if my surgeon was actually the person who had been preparing and researching about it lately.

There is still hope for humanity.

I was feeling your pain yesterday too and feel it somewhat less every single day. I come in from 73 to the downtown area every week day and return to 73 at night. The drive is only 22 miles but it takes 45 minutes in the morning and over an hour at night. The biggest problem we have is that there are no direct routes east to west or north to south aside from the interstate and 61. The interstate has more on and off ramps than you can shake a stick at and 61 has traffic lights pretty much every hundred feet. I was lucky enough to find out that River road was opened yesterday because of the wreck so after I got past Brightside there were no car in front of me and I flew home. This town doesn't need a loop as much as it needs four four lane roads across town north and south east and west that only have lights where they cross each other. The interstate wouldn't be a problem at that point, because there wouldn't be everyone and his dog using it.

Surgeon was on her way to surgery at a surgery center, not a hospital. They don't wheel the patient in the room until they see the whites of the surgeons eyes. Patient would not be on the table without having been examined -- even in an emergency.

Kudos to center's PR staff for getting cute anecdote turned into "see how heroic our doctors are". Note that the name of the center is mentioned 3 times in a short article.
