There has actually been a global trend towards more women applying for post secondary education and graduating with degrees than males but this is the first time I've seen a backlash like this anywhere. It's not like I really needed another reason to hate the freakin' religious wackjobs who are running the place over there currently but their derp cup apparently floweth over. The gift that keeps on giving.

/+1 for the headline, Subs. I snerted.

So the women are out performing the men by a lot (makes sense, base off the oppressive nature of the culture against women - they study harder), so rather than have the best and brightest in your most critical industries including Oil, Nuclear Physics, Electrical Engineering, anything English speaking related, Hospitality, and Computer Science...they would rather have mediocre men doing the job. Because, god forbid a woman be higher ranking than a man in a company. And god forbid she does not marry off young and start producing children immediately.

Farking idiots. Let them rot for all I care.

If you look at this positively, we are now competing with the top players. It's sort of like the Miracle on Ice, when we beat the USSR in Ice Hockey at the Winter Olympics.

Before long even the Taliban will have to contend with us.

How can you take any country seriously when it refuses to exploit half of its' population resource?

"[It] is part of the recent policy of the Islamic Republic, which tries to return women to the private domain inside the home as it cannot tolerate their passionate presence in the public arena," says the letter, which was also sent to Ahmad Shaheed, the UN's special rapporteur for human rights in Iran. "The aim is that women will give up their opposition and demands for their own rights."

Silly uppity, hysterical woman....demanding humane and equal treatment in society.

Sadly, this sounds like the stuff Rep. Daniel Webster actually believes.

He believes that women should not be highly educated or in any position of power within a company? Right...

Goddamn it those poor women... if someone held me from my studies like that I would blow a gasket.

Btw I did physics through my M.Sc., and it's a curious detail that Iran up until now was the only country in the world where the majority of their physics degrees were awarded to women (in the US it's ~20%), and people thought this might be because there's no history there of physics/engineering being a "male" field. Guess they're importing the stereotypes now too.

Ironically they are more liberal than the GOP's official stance on abortion, which is no abortion - EVER - for any reason.

In Iran the policy is:
Legal abortion is now allowed if the mother's life is in danger, and also in cases of fetal abnormalities that make it not viable after birth (such as anencephaly) or produce difficulties for mother to take care of it after birth, such as major thalassemia or bilateral polycystic kidney disease. There is no need for a consent from the father, and request and consent of mother with approval of three specialized physicians and final acceptance by legal medicine center suffices.

Sick burn, Republicans. Iran's just beat you at your own game.

You can step it up, though. I have faith.

2012-08-23 10:58:30 AM
At least the republicans now have a campaign slogan - "Not as bad as Iran on Women's Rights, but close!"

Iran also provides 6 months maternity leave at 100% of pay.

Next thing you will know they will require that all women hide themselves from male view. Oh wait..

You know, once upon a time, Khomeni wanted to have every man in the country in the army. That would have left women in charge of, you know, EVERYTHING ELSE.

Shame, innit?

Maternity leave doesn't jive with the Protestant work ethic that, idiotically, still rules American politics.

Wow, it's nice when your adversary weakens itself by excluding half it's populace from doing things they are often good at. Example, the department head of Electrical Control Systems at my work s a woman, with kids, grandkids, is smart, funny, charming and gets the job done!

I'm sorry for the Persian people however.

Why does the GOP think they can morph into Taliban and nobody notice?

They have become the very terrorists that they scream about fearing.
OK, take 'em up on it and hunt them down with dogs.

Dear God, Rape-ublicans! Our subjugating women jerbs are being outsourced!

Perhaps there is another solution. We must invade Iran and kill those godless devil-worshipers. Then when we're finished killing those uppity Iranian women, we can come back home and get back to work humiliating, belittling, insulting, trampling, and shutting out our second-class, female Real Americans. As God intends.

Subby, the rapepublicans don't hate women, they just want them to accept the role for them mandated by almighty god - brood mare and sammich maker.

Isn't there an Arab saying about 'women are for babies, boys are for sex'? Ought to be (another) plank in the official party platform.

/Knows Persians aren't Arabs - work with me here...

Can't Iran just lock breeding able women up in camps and just kill the rest? Maybe allow a certain amount of girl children to live each year to replenish the breeding stocks.

And what about republican women? do they hate themselves?

This story is something to consider any time you see a group or politician pine away that we should be ruling the country based on a millenia-old religious text. A theocracy is only a good idea when it is your particular brand of religion in charge. Even slight variations in flavor of doctrine can have sweeping impacts on the rights of affected citizens.

Or it could be also that more women in higher positions means they have more power, money and influence. Therefore they can demand more representation in the government. More representation means throwing out the old regime for a new one. And the people who are in power like it just the way it is, thank you. So, BAN WOMEN STUDENTS!

It's easier to control an entire population when you can convince one-half of the population that they need to oppress the other half of the population for whatever reason (God, country, women aren't smart enough to take care of themselves so they need someone to do it for them, borderline Yellow Wallpaper, etc.) That leaves you with only half a population left over the control.

Even if it were offered, no strings attached, it wouldn't happen. The women would want to stay and improve their home country, no matter how difficult it would be, simply because it is home.

yea, other than the few idiotic remarks you get from the co opted right, I'm not really sure where this GOP womens discrimination perspective thing comes from. Abortion? If your a pro-choice woman I can see where that would feel a bit opressive, but the pro-lifers I know just think it's wrong to sanction the death of a fetus, men and women. I know plenty of successful conservative women, and they are by no means push overs for their men.
