I had no idea some of these chains had been around so long. There was an original-design McDonalds in my hometown for years. It was one of the first McDonalds to open in the state. It was something of a local landmark. But then corporate headquarters decided that having a drive-thru and not having to walk up was more important that the landmark value, so they bulldozed it and put up the standard issue McDonalds.

I would never go to any of those restaurants again if they'd just open up a Roy Rogers where I live. That and a 5 Guys is all I need.

List should include Maid-Rite. Even if they never got as big as some of the others, their 85 year history and unique loose-meat sandwich instead of a burger should qualify them for the list.

Csb:

My home town had the first McDonald's drive thru window. It was made so the soldiers could eat off base. At that time you couldn't patron a civilian Resuarant in uniform. Because the base was a large training outpost with almost no infrastructure at the time, there was a need to go off post for food. My dad was an infantry commander on the base and actually helped with the idea of making the drive thru window with McD's management.

Wasn't Taco Bell actually decent for a while? And then they introduce the $0.49 menu and the rest is history, right?

"In 2011, the famous drive-in known for its five-hole burger - which the company maintains cooks the patties "faster and more evenly" - will celebrate its 90th anniversary."

Nice fresh new article, subby.

I am with you there and I miss them so much having moved to Baton Rouge from DesMoines. I also think Taco Johns should be added to the list and we don't have those here too. :(

A slideshow that also resets the page to the top so you have to scroll down EVERY SINGLE TIME the picture changes in order to see it. I got to pic 4 before I gave up.

Lucky you! I have to drive an hour to get to the "Fixin's bar".

Popeyes is good if you can find one that is run properly. The Popeyes by me are run worse than KFC.

You are joking right? Popeyes and good should not be together in the same sentence unless it is good riddance. This finding one that is run well is that like if you can divide by zero?
