Stephen K. Hayes was mostly a student of Shoto Tanemura who was a student of Masaaki Hatsumi (Bujinkan) until he (Tanemura) went his own way to form the Genbukan.

Stephen Hayes didn't have a particularly close relationship with Hatsumi Sensei in the years after he left Japan, and he is no longer a member of the Bujinkan (his plaque has been removed from the wall at the Hombu dojo in Japan), having formed his own organization Toshindo.

Kawakami is, by many estimates, more a ninjutsu historian rather than a real practitioner. Still, he does have some interesting information, I am sure.

Hatsumi, Tanemura, Manaka, the head of Katori Shinto Ryu, and the head of Kukishin Ryu are the individuals having some knowledge of the techniques of the ninja and esoteric martial arts, depending on who you ask. It is a touchy subject in Japanese martial arts circles.
