Yeah, Firefly jumped the shark as soon as the opening credits were over.

Kessler had a dog, Elaine didn't exist, and Jerry had a picture window in the Seinfeld Chronocles. Its hard to judge in hindsight.

Pilots mean nothing in the long run.

Most good shows take at least a season to get things right.

If Fox had started with the pilot for Firefly it might have been a different story.

Pilots are hit or miss. I think that the tone and concepts introduced are far more important than actual events, in most cases. How the series builds on those ideas in the future is important.

Of course, if the pilot is complete garbage, then there isn't much to work with.

Sometimes the show is good even if the pilot sucks. TFA article is right about DS9. The pilot was terrible.

If you watch a show long enough, the pilot is usually painful to go back and rewatch. "My God, this was before they introduced that great character that didn't show up until season X, and they haven't gotten down the personalities of the characters at all!"

Well the first thing you should do, in order to succeed, is air the show on Fox, on Friday night - prime time.
Everyone stays home and watches TV then!!!

Yeah, if a show doesn't grab me on the pilot it must be bad. In fact, the opening credits/title sequence are often even better than the show itself.

Inspector Spacetime fans, then?
Awesome credits in that one.

That "Amy Pond's Secret Friend" show had godawful title sequence, must be a total crap show.

2012-08-22 10:16:30 PM
Parks and Rec had an awful pilot and a pretty mediocre-to-bad first season.

Then it became the best comedy on TV.

2012-08-22 10:17:59 PM
Eureka, I think, nailed the pilot. In fact, I'm of half a mind to go watch it now.

2012-08-22 10:21:41 PM
Mad Men didn't have the most interesting pilot. The only likable character was Peggy, and mostly because we felt bad for her rather than because of anything she did. It also didn't bother with a "thing of the week" and the setting was an office.

And yet it's one of the top rated shows.

So I'd say sticking to a formula laid out by some blogger isn't the way to go.

I remember the first time I watched Firefly, I thought... they are flying cows through space... WTF? That might not have been the pilot, but whatever the case, my first impression was not good. Eventually, I went back through and ended up watching the entire series, and enjoyed it.

Watch the Eureka pilot and see how future Zoe waves to past Zoe as the cars pass each other. Then skip to the finale where when they pass, she doesn't wave. That could be due to the timeline change.

You know, I picked up Firefly on a reccomendation from a friend and tried to watch the pilot. 3 times. Fell asleep each time.

Watched The Train Job, got hooked, watched the pilot 3rd or so. I don't really have a point, but I wasted 20 seconds or so of your life. Sorry about that.

Firefly is my favorite show of all time. I watched it on DVD so I don't know about the pilot situation. Regardless. A wonderful show.

I'd say The Shield is the best pilot of them all.

When Vic said "good cop bad cop left for the day, I'm a different kind of cop" that's when I knew this was going to be great. And then the ending, wow! Now that is a goddamn pilot baby!

How to predict if TV shows will be good

Is it made in the US or Canada?
Yes: It sucks. Don't bother.
No: It might be good. Proceed to next question.

Is it made in the UK, Italy, Australia (before 2004 only), or Mexico?
Yes: It is probably good. You win.
No: Could be dicey...proceed to next question.

Do you have a fast internet connection?
Yes: Stream or download something worthwhile to watch.
No: Sucks to be you unless you are near a museum, bookstore, or pub.

It was Summer Glau. She feeds on the remains of dead shows. Joss Whedon alone has provided her with enough nourishment to last for years.

It's on Netflix. There's an example of a show with a pilot that accurately represented what you were going to get for the rest of the year. In fact, I'm going to go watch that pilot again.

/"Missing Persons" is still a bit hard to watch
