Future suggestion: portfolio of the specialist's work before allowing them to start work on the piece.

My father has done a few restorations, although not quite of this caliber. First he provided his qualifications and a portfolio. The second step was to photograph the subject which also included taking measurements, determiing pigmants and materials, research other works from the sam artist when possible. Then he would provide sketches, details about the restoration process, and a mock-up of the completed subject to verify accuracy and to be sure this is what the customer wanted as some restorations require stronger color tones or details previously unseen. Only once the customer signed off on the mock-up did the actual restoration process begin. Customer was included in the process by allowing frequent visits during the restoration, allowing for corrections as needed.

I'm pretty sure they were the victim of some nuttie buddy wanna be artist who was dying to put another notch on their easel by claiming to restored an important religious relic.
