Um, yeah, so, are you just trolling, or trying to make a real attempt and convincing people to your side?

Well, just as most "organized Christian" groups give a bad overall view of Christianity (AFA, Focus on the Family, etc), the same thing goes for organized Atheistic groups, as we see here.

that is a pretty tasteless and trolly billboard.

Other faiths, including Judaism and Islam, were spared because the billboards are designed to attack GOP nominee Mitt Romney, a Mormon, and President Obama, a Christian, according to AAI.

Suuuuuuure. Go on. What are you afraid of, huh? Chicken.

"The president of the United States is in a position to make life-changing decisions for all Americans. We believe it is perfectly reasonable to ask whether each candidate will choose to follow his religious faith or the U.S. Constitution when making those decisions."

ok, the billboards were kind of offensive...but this is a valid point. given that many Republicans have made a big deal about governing by 'biblical principals', the atheists DO have reason for concern. if it came down to a conflict between 'biblical principals' and the US constitution and laws governing this land, which would Romney choose? i'm not sure of the answer but it's certainly a valid question these days.

Silly Weaver95, you still think Romney actually believes in anything? If it came to a conflict of enriching himself at the expense of the nation or enriching himself at the expense of the entire modern world, well, then you might have to consider what the outcome would be.

The Christian mythologists, calling themselves the Christian Church, have erected their fable, which for absurdity and extravagance is not exceeded by anything that is to be found in the mythology of the ancients.

Noted philosopher, founding father, and religious troll, Thomas Paine.

Dickish and juvenile, but worst of all, poorly done. I mean graphically, it's just a mess. There are some really good atheist billboards out there, why would they use this ugly POS? Better examples:

i105.photobucket.com
Humorous.

i105.photobucket.com
i105.photobucket.com
Clear, simple message, attractive presentation.

i105.photobucket.com
Thought provoking, good use of color.

i105.photobucket.com
Subtle, but effective.

The one in TFA is just lame- the toast thing is stupid and the color scheme is just awful. Come on, atheists[dot]org, hire some competent artists.

I know what you're implying.

But there is the possibility they are actually afraid of menacing phone calls, chastising them that they've decided to waste time with this nonsense when they could have become a dentist like that nice Goldman boy from down the street who is doing very well, or that they obviously have the time to put up these billboards but never a minute to call their mothers.

Anyone notice the very optimistic poll results next to TFA?

65% of Fox (dotcom) viewers think Romney will get a bounce at the convention that will carry him through to the elections.

*reads TFA*

Facepalm. That about as trendy and hip as making fun of mentally disabled people, pointing out the President's middle name, or voicing thinly veiled racism.

Hey people, we all learned rule # 1 in kindergarten...don't be a dick!

"Join American Atheists" makes it sound like Atheism is a religion.

You don't need a support group to not believe in something.

Seems like it has done what it was supposed to do - bring attention to the whole religion thing. I haven't seen much about R-Money being a Mormon. This really brings this up in a BIG way.

If Islam represented more than .5% of the American population and the radical elements thereof were attempting to take control of the political debate in this country, you might have a point.

At least they didn't shoot up a think tank like they did last week. Only the left can kill people in the name of tolerance and not recognize the hypocrisy.

2012-08-22 04:43:20 PM
Is this any worse then the billboards saying i'm going to hell or to accept Jesus Christ as my lord an savior ?

What is funny is both candidates proclaim their belief in the invisible sky wizard. I wonder how Obama justifies murdering people with his religious beliefs ? Or how will Romney. Those might be very enlightening questions but they would never get answered.

Most of the people who proclaim their love for Jesus have no f-ing clue what the guy said or stood for.

Killing hundreds / thousands for political end games and "national interests" wasn't part of the teachings I'm afraid.

srtpointman: How is atheism not a religion? "You're wrong, so you should believe me." That's the basic argument of all religions.

Even if we accept the premise that "You're wrong, so you should believe me" is "the basic argument of all religions", is that argument what defines a religion?

If one thinks, "you're wrong so believe me", you're automatically part of some religion?

Religion, is one instance quickly pulled off the web, is defined as "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs."

I don't think an atheist, who by definition denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings, and, in my experience, pretty much believe there is no "purpose" to the universe" can fall under the definition of religion in any sense.

But that's just me, so I digress.

2012-08-22 04:47:24 PM
Not putting a message on a billboard is bigotry, but attacking another religion isn't?

Hmm...

2012-08-22 04:47:38 PM
Don't you hate it when religious groups get all up in your business and tell you what to believe?

You are what you hate.

2012-08-22 04:48:12 PM
Ugh. Atheist spend so much time and effort trying to explain to the religious that we aren't attacking them or their religion, and then we have idiots putting up moronic billboards like this, which completely undermines us. Would I rather everyone didn't feel the need to believe in deities? Sure. But if that's what people choose to believe, it's their call. Insulting their beliefs isn't going to do anything but feed in to their persecution complex, which will make them even more likely to try and shove their religion down other people's throats.

When your opponent is going down in flames, the classy thing is to stand back and just let it happen, not pile on with the abuse.

It's poor taste, such poor taste I wonder who funds this "Joined American Atheists". This is surely to be looked upon unfavorably by religious and swing voters. It won't convince anyone to switch sides. It can only push people away from the democratic party.
