Id eat the hell out of that taco. And thats the name of that tune.

now I'm really sad that there is no place within walking distance that can provide me with much needed tacos for lunch.

Eh, read the article earlier this morning. Big whoop; he's not the only one who did something like this. While the family's pride in his determination and ingenuity is justified, the whole article was really just a space filler for a dying paper.

There's a restaurant in Tucson that sold what my mother called 'taco irons' as far back as the late 40s/early '50s. El Molino? Can't remember Casa Molina, that's the place. The ones for sale to the public would fry two shells at a time, where the ones for the restaurant did something like 8 to 10, maybe even 12. Mom got me one back in the early 90s and I use it frequently.

If this guy in the article and the Molinos folks had contraptions, you gotta figure it's not really that unique.

And by the by, taco shells - anywhere - are only as good as the tortillas you use. Use crappy tortillas? They'll taste like crap. Use a tortilla that's too thick? See you at the dentist. It makes all the difference in the world.

Canada is like that, minus the Mexican people everywhere. My mother-in-law is Mexican, and she introduced me to the real deal.. Goddamn.

What's sad is that when you can find a Mexican restaurant (fairly rare, aside from some burrito places) they often have "El Paso-ized" food - halfway between the real deal you'd find in an area with a bigger Mexican population and the stuff that comes in the kits. No lime, sometimes hard shells. Pico de gallo is the hottest thing in the place. Even with these concessions to local ideas of "Mexican food", these places often don't last long because hey, why not just go to Taco Bell?

Keeps me going to the inlaws though.

Mexican food or low crime and high wages? I'll still take white neighborhoods everyday.

pute kisses like a man: forget completely about mexican restaurants. hang out near a lowes or home depot looking for a taco truck. you will eat infinitely better than any 'mexican' restaurant. here's the secret. restaurants take a lot of start up capital. they also need to cater to the taste of the locals. locals always have non-mexican tastes, so you'll get crap. trust me, taco trucks where day laborers frequent. with this method, you could find good mexican food in any city in america. and cheaper too. 

also, go to the mexican neighborhoods. once the street advertisements are in spanish, start looking for holes in the wall.

THIS. Some restaurants are pretty good (especially the hole-in-the-wall variety in one's Mexican district), but taco trucks are the BEST. Seriously, if you're looking to make some good money and you don't live on the West Coast, buy a couple of food trucks and set up shop near/on local military bases. You will make mad bank. When I was stuck at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma for a year I'd have gleefully shanked just about anybody for a proper burrito, or at least a hit of cilantro, and I wasn't the only one. (In fairness, there was ONE place in Lawton that did a damn fine burrito, but it was a good 40 minutes there and back, and traffic/roads there were craptastic.)
