This isn't really that terribly surprising. Especially if the guy has been fishing within that same area for 40 years. The sea saw quite a few mines between World War I and World War II. It would be logical to assume that a % didn't blow up and that they are still lurking, waiting to be found by some method (either blowing up or saying to a fisher out at sea, "I'm a mine! Look at my mine-e-ness!)

I'm surprised that with the total number of mines deployed in WWI & WWII, there are not more occurrences of boats hitting them and blowing up.

Wow, there are a lot of different types Naval mines....Link

I blame too many people working at work, and not playing minesweeper often enough.

I wonder if he did catch a mine. Maybe he just claims he did to get his name in the media. Now, if he can produce a picture of the mine then I will believe him. Until then I think he is suffering from Minehausen by proxy syndrome.

"If a mine blows up ship at sea, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

FTFA- He said anybody who found ordnance at sea or on the beach should contact the Coastguard for safe disposal to be arranged with the Royal Navy's explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialists

or just throw it back in...

Mr Gilson, who skippered the restored cockle boat The Endeavour during the Jubilee event, eventually managed to get it back into the water.

I would always open that game, click a few times, see some odd numbers then blow up and 'game over'.

Then one night I figured what it was all about.
I stopped playing eight hours later when everyone was starting to wake up.
