They mentioned on the radio today that he caught a ball on the warning track while playing shortstop.. that's pretty fast.

via my modified ops stat where you add stolen bases into the slugging percentage and subtract caught steeling, his ops is 1.084

I'm sure there's some stat that already does this, but I don't care.

Were they not playing with a left fielder?

Too bad as Dee Gordon proved, you can't steal first base.

No, they're playing Manny.

He may be as good at Henderson at base stealing but does he bring his A-game when he speaks of himself in the third person? Rudemix hopes so.

Yep. It's an impressive number, but can he do that over a full season in the bigs? If so, then he's the next Rickey.

Well, that would make sense. Damn games always interfering with the guy's break time in the left field wall.

Never really a fan of base stealing. Seems like such a dishonorable thing to do. You earned whatever base you got out of your plate appearance. That next base doesn't belong to you. To take it when the ball is not in play is downright cheap. Have some faith in your teammates' ability to advance you.

Vince was more of a tarp-machine steamroll-ee than anything.

it looks like A and AA ball, lets see if he can hack AAA before we start talking about the bigs. I mean hell he was 81% successful again CLASS A and AA catchers and pitchers, rickey was 81% successful in the majors.

I bought a hundred forty-seven of these. One for every base I'm gonna steal. Excuse me while I take my first step toward the Hall of Fame.

Real hard to steal second with your shoe untied.

And what the hell is up with bunting. If you're unwilling to swing for the fences, you'll never amount to anything. If you don't want to take a chance, sit your ass down and let a real player get a shot at the plate.

To steal from Bradley Ankrom, Hamilton has more steals in 2012 than 181 professional ballclubs (including every club in the majors), and has more steals than 129 clubs have attempts.

I know you're joking, but wOBA uses SB & CS. He's up around .420 for the year, which is quite good.

Jim Riggleman, who was coaching third base, gave him a hearty handshake as the crowd rewarded the speedster with a standing ovation.

I know you're joking, but wOBA uses SB & CS. He's up around .420 for the year, which is quite good.

I was adding SBs to his Total Bases and subtracting CS... then making that his slugging percentage.

I mean if you get a single and steal 2nd and 3rd, you esentially hit a triple.

Right, hence the "I know you're joking."

Though, in much the same way that people insist on reminding me that a walk is not as good as a single, a single + a SB is not as good as a double. A single + 2SB is kinda as good as a triple, but only because it requires no one else to be on base.

From a pure vacuum perspective, yes.

Well every stat depends on the situation.. that's why you can't get too deep into the stats of a baseball game.

A single with a runner on 2nd is better than a double with no runners on.

That's why stats are better individually then when you try to formulate some huge combined stat like RAR

Yeah, I think. Hamilton's drawback is that he apparently can't field worth a damn. 30 errors or some such.

And what the hell is up with grounders? If you aren't manly enough to put the ball in play, with brute force in the air, you don't deserve to hit the ball.

Billy Hamilton forced me to wear a woman's bikini. Well anyway, Billy tears off my clothes and forces me to wear this skimpy bikini. For the next three months I had to conduct my business wearing only a woman's bathing suit. I would cry from shame and question my manhood daily, but Ill be damned if at the end of the quarter my sales hadn't tripled.

Well, it depends on what you're trying to do. Two scenarios:

1. Let's say I'm the GM of a team. But i have no budget for scouting and the team can't afford internet either. I'm looking to sign a hitter, any hitter. Someone gives me a free ticket to the local minor league game. I decide that I'm going to sign the best hitter in the game.

Well, as it turns out, both teams only get one hit. Billy Brown hits a weak single that drives in the runner from second (who only ended up there because of a HBP and an errant pickoff throw). George Jones hits a line drive double into the gap, but gets stranded.

I'm gonna sign George Jones, right? He was the better hitter in the game, even if his team lost.

2. Meanwhile, you're a lazy sportswriter who forgot to fill out his Generic Minor League League MVP ballot. You go to the same game I do, and decide that whichever player is more valuable, well, that's who you're going to write in on your ballot. You're voting for Billy Brown, right? He won the game!

The thing is, we have stats that help with both of these scenarios. Brown had the higher WPA; Jones had the higher wOBA.

The issue, and this is where sabermetrics really comes into play...do we really want to penalize Jones for being in a worse situation than Brown? I'm not particularly comfortable doing so.

The legend of Hamilton catching a ball on the warning track while playing SS is from his high school days, so probably a bit of an exaggeration.

The story of him scoring on sac fly to the 2B is apparently true and happened in Bakersfield this year but I cannot find video evidence.

So the point of doing all of the mathmatic gymnastics is to come up with the best MVP candidate?

The whole issue is, you can use all of the traditional stats and build an all-star team, and you can use whichever sabremetric stats you want to build your team, and most likely we'll have pretty much the same team.

I think in your scenario it would be cheaper to go to the library and use the internet than go to this single minor league game.

MugzyBrown: you can use all of the traditional stats and build an all-star team, and you can use whichever sabremetric stats you want to build your team, and most likely we'll have pretty much the same team.

I HIGHLY doubt that.

Have you SEEN the sorts of people at the library?
