brap: Having grown up in the midwest, I can tell you from experience.  Animal rendering plants are perhaps the worst stench in the world.  You can smell them from miles away.


Every time I drive through Clinton or Cedar Rapids, I am reminded of why I would never live in either of those cities.

Like it is right now. I live close to the Mississippi. There are days it smells like an abandoned fishmarket outside.

Now, it just smells like stale oats and dessicated Quakers.

You have to admit Cedar Rapids was a olifactory wonderland on the days that the Quaker Oats factory made Captain Crunchberries.  Sometimes if the winds were right it would waft all the way to Iowa City.
