One is a more 'blue' blue, while the other is a blue 'blue'.

Nothing like a party's platform to actually be exposed to the light of day and have imbeciles try to justify their bullshiat.

Guys, this is just silly. This whole "Ryan's views are identical to Akin's" nonsense you bring up with legal documentation is just comparing Michigan apples to Red Delicious apples.

There's absolutely no commonality between them. Another liberal hate party.

How do they not see crap like this coming.

This election, the undecideds don't matter. What will decide the election is turnout.

The tax returns stuff will keep Republicans at home, while this forcble-rape crap will get the Democrats to show up at the polls. I think Obama's strategy will work.

This goes, in my opinion, to the crux of most (I did say most) social conservatives' thinking. That is, if you are pro-choice, then you are pro-abortion. Pro-choice means women should have a CHOICE; it does not mean that people who are pro-choice go out and have abortions every time. I think it's safe to say that a significant number of pro-choice people have gone on to have children.

That's hilarious...

Man, the GOP is so angry that idiot, Akin, actually said what most of these regressive morons believe.

Hey Rince, or whatever the hell your name is... Ryan cosponsored legislation with identical wording to what Akin said. The GOP is about to adopt making a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no exceptions for rape as part of its platform.

Do you not keep up with the party you represent or do you just think every American is as ignorant and uninformed as the GOP base?

Actually, right now they're betting that women will lie to get abortions when they restrict abortion to rape, incest or the life of the mother. As it is ,women don't need to give a reason for their choice. They're looking ahead to a day when women will have no choice but to lie. This is why I don't like to see pro choice people defend abortion based on the woman's circumstance, it's none of their damned business why the choice was made.

Pro-choice for me is a pragmatic stance. Abortions are going to happen, you can't stop that. What you can do is try to prevent unwanted pregnancies with available contraceptives and education. You can also make sure that babies and mothers are well taken care of (available health care and day care), and stop demonizing. When these measures fail, make sure the actual procedure is done safely, and in a clean environment. The sad part is the people who are so vehemently opposed to abortion are also opposed to contraceptives, to WIC, medicaid, ACA, and anything else that would make the woman less likely to want an abortion,

Ryan reminds me of a kid who comes up to his parents (GOP overlords) and is like, 'hey guys, you all know I workout a lot and have an Ayn Rand complex' (GOP overlords are impressed, nice resume, nice retarded philosophy, also this says you've been around the block here in Congress) 'hey guys, i got this idea I've been working on for months now to reduce the deficit, it's a total package even though it does nothing to actually reduce the deficit.'

The GOP overlords look at his plan and say, 'Well we didn't read it but we believe you, so I'll give you all the votes in Congress for it so it passes the House' and then it gets publicized and rejected and then Ryan repackages the same farking plan and it gets publicized and rejected.

Eventually Obama looks at it and says 'well this is a total package Paul, but it doesn't address the deficit and it says here you want to cut taxes to pay for it which is completely retarded so...nice try kid'.

Then the right-wing press and blogosphere goes batshiat insane 'OMAGERD OBAMA DOESNT WANT TO CUT THE DEFICIT HE'S JUST SO BLACK AND...I MEAN HE'S JUST SUCH A SOCIALIST AND THE RYAN PLAN IS SO GOOD THAT...' and now Paul Ryan is an up and coming player on the Congressional stage and then Romney can't find anyone to run with him and picks Ryan.

Lest we forget that Ryan is an anti-abortion nutjob whose economic philosophy is 'fark you I get mine' and well, I think that's all you need to know about his politics. He's as mentally stunted as the rest of the GOP.

That's a good point. Additionally, it's like they assume women wouldn't try to get one anyway. That is what happens currently in countries that have outlawed abortions, and many women do die doing it.

And this is why there does exist a "right to privacy" in the Constitution. Not in those words, but WTF else do the 4th and 5th Amendments mean if not "citizens have the general right to privacy, which may only be abridged in these specific ways, warrants issued on probable cause, fair trials, yadda yadda"?

Which extends to abortion because a) SCOTUS says it's a legal procedure and 2) HIPAA says that government can't ask what's in my medical records without a court order. And I would love for the "no government between me and my doctor" folks to start continue to be oblivious to their doublethink while putting more and more barriers between a woman and her doctor.

I think there are a lot more pro-life women than you might think in the middle of the country, even if it's not the vast majority. I can't find a gender breakdown of the new polls but I'm sure Akin's still getting plenty of support from women.

Being able to trot out Jane Roe and have her say "I regret having an abortion" is a very powerful tool.

Paul Ryan is anti-abortion and I disagree with his position, but putting that on par with the "legitimate" rape comment and the assumption that women can magically will themselves to not be pregnant after a rape seems a little harsh.

I mean, Ryan's sort of in the "I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler" position, whereas with Aiken I have to keep checking to make sure he still doesn't have the stupid mustache.

ArkPanda: I think there are a lot more pro-life women than you might think in the middle of the country, even if it's not the vast majority. I can't find a gender breakdown of the new polls but I'm sure Akin's still getting plenty of support from women.

I dunno, since we're comparing Ryan and Aiken, I think there's a line somewhere between "abortion is wrong in all cases and shouldn't be allowed" and "if you get pregnant from a rape obviously it wasn't a real rape and it's your fault, you slut" that the latter has crossed and the former has not. Again, there is a meaningful distinction here, even if it's mostly one of degree rather than nature.

Here's the thing though, Paul Ryan Agrees with the derptastic Akin part too, he's just not stupid enough to say it. It's a pretty common thought process in the "no exceptions on abortion whatsoever" crowd to morally justify forcing women to carry rape babies to term.

2012-08-22 11:13:18 AM
Anyone else remember when this first started there was an onslaught of pictures of botched alley-abortions performed by men who have no knowledge of anatomy? Or the pictures of women who bled out when they snagged the wrong thing with a bent hanger?

I'm not going back to that.

It's amazing how these "conservative" people can be bleeding hearts for someone who doesn't exist yet, but not for the person who is cornered into actions like I describe above.

Jim_Callahan: Paul Ryan is anti-abortion and I disagree with his position, but putting that on par with the "legitimate" rape comment and the assumption that women can magically will themselves to not be pregnant after a rape seems a little harsh.

I think there is two seperate issues ...

a) The "Legitimate" Rape - "Rape rape" vs. "Slut rape" has been a GOP boogeyman for a long time, with the contention that slutty women claim to have been raped to justify abortions. This is why Ryan and Akin's co-sponsored anti-abortion bill specifically mentioned "forcible rape" exceptions in it's wording. Since it's his authored bill with his name on it, it's hard to say he doesn't share this belief.

b) The biological defense mechanism that prevents pregancy .... I have no idea if Ryan shares this belief. I'll assume he doesn't since it's pants on the head retarded, even though it's apparently a popular opinion in the rabid pro-life community.

2012-08-22 11:23:18 AM
Someone has probably already pointed this out, but, isn't it very telling how he says. "Well, certainly, you know first of all, if it was me and -- I wouldn't say anything that dumb as he has."

Not, "What he said was wrong and we do not agree with it."

So he's admitting that they officially agree with him, they're just not stupid enough to actually say it.

Baffling.

The Homer Tax: Here's the thing though, Paul Ryan Agrees with the derptastic Akin part too, he's just not stupid enough to say it. It's a pretty common thought process in the "no exceptions on abortion whatsoever" crowd to morally justify forcing women to carry rape babies to term.

Yeah, but "no abortion, no exceptions" is just a political position that I (and basically everyone that's not a complete asshole) don't agree with. It's the making up random bullshiat to support it and presenting said bullshiat as fact that makes this despicable rather than just something we don't agree with.

There's a difference between shiat that's terrible if you don't agree with it and shiat that's terrible whether or not you agree with it, is what I'm saying here. Akin has crossed into the latter territory. If you agree with the basic premise there's nothing that Ryan has said that sounds particularly offensive, so he hasn't crossed that line into being a truly non-viable candidate (whose campaign should be aborted, ho, ho, ho) yet.

Let's say the Republican "person-hood begins at conception" amendment is passed, AND they allow abortions for rape.

One question. If a pregnancy results from rape, at what point in time after conception does killing that person become murder, and what's your reasoning for selecting that date?

Oh, I never meant to imply that Paul Ryan was a non-viable candidate. I think he's a very viable candidate. There are a lot of people out there who agree with him, that's why it's a part of the GOP platform.

My new fav GOP talking point - Thanks Doc Willke

You see, the vagina is like a series of tubes, and we have to be very careful what we put in those tubes.

I'm staunchly pro-choice, but I find to "no exceptions" pro-lifers to be less vile. This idea that women should be "punished" with an unwanted child for the crime of having and enjoying sex, but rape or incest gives you a "get out of jail" free card is more noxious to me than a belief that all life is precious regardless of the circumstances.

Under this law, all kinds of shenanigans can occur. For instance:

- If my hand is on the stomach of the mother, and the fetus kicks me, can I press charges for assault?
- Does the zygote qualify as a dependent?
- If/When the mother dies, does the zygote inherit power of attorney?
- Will zygotes be counted on the census?
- Will the zygote be summoned for jury duty?
- Does the zygote require a passport to cross country boundaries, and if so, do shipments of fertilized eggs require a passport for each one?
- Since the zygote is sexually indeterminate, how will medicaid benefits be assessed?
- Are miscarriages now manslaughter?
- If a miscarriage occurs on the toilet, and the zygote happens to be flushed, is that hiding a corpse?

Epoch_Zero: - If/When the mother dies, does the zygote inherit power of attorney?

Those two questions are moot - the zygote/fetus is not of age to be summoned for jury duty. I'm also fairly sure a minor can't hold power of attorney (or maybe that's just the under-17 crowd who aren't allowed to make medical decisions?).

- Does the zygote require a passport to cross country boundaries, and if so, do shipments of fertilized eggs require a passport for each one?

Follow-up: what names would/should appear on the documents? Who chooses the names? In cultures/religions where it's considered "bad luck" to name a child pre-birth, will we be forcing people to violate religious beliefs in order to name these cell clusters (in a shower of trollolololols)?

Can/could someone sue ex parte Fetus?

2012-08-22 11:54:16 AM

Jim_Callahan: Paul Ryan is anti-abortion and I disagree with his position, but putting that on par with the "legitimate" rape comment and the assumption that women can magically will themselves to not be pregnant after a rape seems a little harsh.

Paul Ryan cosponsored a bill with Todd Akin that would limit abortion to cases of "forcible" rape, which is what Akin was actually trying to reference when he said "legitimate" rape. Paul Ryan's views are Todd Akin's views.

But it's a moot point, as for requiring a passport, why would a pregnant woman be traveling? I think the GOP would see that as human trafficking and an attempt to establish terrorist anchor babies. She should be in the kitchen.

Dusk-You-n-Me: PRIEBUS: Right, but, Erin, I think you're making a false assumption here. And that is that you're making the assumption that women are pro-abortion. And I don't believe that. I actually think that most women are pro life. And so I happen to believe you can be pro women and pro life.

You happen to be wrong.

Well, I am a woman, and I am not pro-abortion. I think that every abortion is tragic in some way. I donate money to programs that help women more easily put children up for adoption. I give money to programs that help poor women afford proper prenatal care. I support program to help poor families raise healthy children.

I also support programs that educate kids on realizing when they are ready for sex. I also support teaching kids effective strategies for saying no if they are not ready for sex. I also support programs that teach kids who may want to have sex the ways to avoid pregnancy and STDs. I believe in making all forms of birth control affordable (or free) and readily available. Women who aren't pregnant don't get abortions.

What I do not support is outlawing abortion.

It's a question of when life begins. I personally think life begins at 40.
